Request for a Tree Preservation Order for Mature Beech and Oak Trees on Coldharbour Lane, Dorking

We are calling for a Tree Preservation Order for the mature Oak and Beech trees and their exposed intertwined root system which support the fragile banks of the ancient sunken holloway, Coldharbour Lane, Dorking, Surrey.

Why is this important?

The Tree Preservation Order will provide greater protection to the vulnerable trees on the narrow part of Coldharbour Lane, it will serve to protect them from unnecessary felling and aim to increase responsibility of care from industrial use of the lane. The trees and their exposed intertwined root systems which form the sunken lane require protection for generations to come. Twenty trees, mainly Beech and Oak have been identified as vulnerable in a recent tree report completed by an independent arboriculturalist.

Coldharbour Lane is a beautiful deep ancient Holloway formed naturally through centuries of use which links Dorking to Leith Hill (AONB), Coldharbour Village and surrounding area. Unbelievably, this fragile lane is part of the main haulage route for over 1,200 HGV Lorry movements during the planned eighteen week exploratory oil drill at Bury Hill Woods.

Currently, a micro fauna survey has revealed the banks of the holloway lacks the forest floor biodiversity of more naturalized holloways occurring locally, exacerbating natural erosion. The soil structure is almost entirely sand and the absence of deeper rooting sub-flora along the bank sides promotes rapid erosion and bank side instability. This is already an 'at risk habitat' and it is clear from the simplest stress tests that increased low-frequency vibration from HGV's will speed bankside erosion considerably. Attempts to tamper with the trees along the roadside to enable HGV's to access the site efficiently will further speed the erosion and desertification of the substrate. It is noted that some felling of beech tree's and limbs (which previously hanged over the lane) has already taken place and that these particular trees would have caused obstruction to larger vehicles.
The tree roots are in places exposed near ground level and at immediate risk of contamination from any HGV spillages.

As specified in the tree report, any damage to the tree's and their roots requires an appropriately qualified surgeon to carry out all necessary work.

How it will be delivered

This petition will be presented along with the Tree Preservation Order request, Tree Report, Micro Fauna Survey and other expert findings in due course.

Reasons for signing

  • There isn’t anything more important to human life than the environment in which we live. It's a real shame that we grant a small number of narrow minded people the right to damage or destroy it for their own gain.
  • Protect & love Mother Earth and Leith Hill... and have a special affinity for trees.
  • TREES NEED TO BE PROTECTED. THEY HELP PROTECT THE PLANET. WILD LIFE AND HUMANS NEED THEM.
