Reinstate Precautionary Gritting to Brympton

Hi all,

Following my discussions with David Fothergill, the Leader of Somerset County Council last week I am pleased to say that he and the Cabinet have been able find sufficient headroom in next financial year’s finances to propose restoring the gritting savings made.

Whilst it's frustrating that it took severe weather for common sense to prevail, I’m extremely happy to say that the Council has listened to the concerns of the community and that the final budgetary decision will go to Full Council on the 20th Feb. Needless to say I will be voting in favour of this proposal.

Thanks for all your support in getting this issue back on the agenda.

Many thanks,

Josh

Reinstate Precautionary Gritting to Brympton

Please reinstate a precautionary gritting service to Brympton. This reduction in service has had a particular effect on Brympton as the roads of Thorne Lane, Western Avenue and Tintnihull Road were removed from the precautionary gritting network which are key roads for people getting to work and doing the school run.

Why is this important?

In September 2018 the Cabinet at Somerset County Council reduced the number of precautionary gritting routes on the County's roads. This reduction in service has had a particular effect on Brympton as the roads of Thorne Lane, Western Avenue and Tintnihull Road were removed from the precautionary gritting network. Precautionary gritting takes place when the road temperature is expected to drop below 1℃. However without gritting these roads, which experience high levels of traffic in the morning and evening can be treacherous. There are also a number of schools in the area where parents need to be able to drop their children off at school safely, without proper treatment in periods of weather where ice is likely to form the roads pose a real danger to those who use them.

Reasons for signing

  • I drive 20 miles from Langport to Halstock every day for work and not one road on the route I take gets gritted .
  • Perfect example today! Can’t get the kids to school! Ridiculous!
  • For the safety of the parents and their children
