Respect Girls More - Take Down Your Sign

We wanted Missguided to respect girls more and remove the sign 'Send me nudes x' from the back wall of their store in Bluewater. We are pleased to announce they have done so. We thank Missguided for their swift action in response to our petition. We urge Missguided and other fashion stores to take their responsibility seriously by not sexualising girls, legitimising the negative sexual pressures they feel under or encouraging illegal behaviour through their marketing campaigns. Why is this important?

Teenage girls feel under increasing pressure to create and send nude pictures of themselves. An NSPCC report says teenage girls are most adversely affected by the sexting culture. Once online, these nude images can be seen and used by anyone, making girls and vulnerable young women the victims of bullying, revenge porn and exploitation. Many of these nude images can even make their way to child abuse websites. It is illegal in the UK for nude images of under 18's to be created, sent and shared. 'Send me Nudes' legitimises the culture of sexual coercion that teenage girls and young women experience daily. In posting 'Send me nudes' in their store, Missguided are promoting a negative and damaging culture. Instead, they should be empowering young women to value their intrinsic value and express their uniqueness through the art of fashion. So we are calling on Missguided to respect girls and take down their sign.

GOOD NEWS! The sign is coming down tonight, and they've covered it in the meantime! THANK YOU so much for helping us press this company to take their responsibility to their young shoppers seriously. We will keep the petition open until tonight to allow people who want to sign to get involved. It is so good to know that so many of us care about messages in public spaces that can have negative influences on young people. If there is any follow on from this, we will keep you informed.

Friends, incredibly, in the space of 5 hours we have gathered over 1,000 signatures! The petition will remain live until 3pm tomorrow when Rebecca Rumsey and I will collate the signatures. We will then let you know when we will be presenting our petition to remove the 'Send Me Nudes' sign from any and all Missguided stores, to the CEO of Missguided Ltd.
