Reverse the amendments to the term time family holiday rules under The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 which came into force on 1 September 2013.

These changes will adversely affect many families who cannot afford the cost of a holiday in school holidays. Also not all business can allow their staff to be off all at the same time therefore is the department of education now saying that children are not entitled to holidays with their parents anymore. I feel that most MPs in the Government had holidays with their parents when they were younger so why do they think they have the power to stop our children's generation from enjoying the same lifestyle.

All children who have a good attendance record should be allowed the opportunity to enjoy quality time with their parents on an annual holiday of up to 10 days once per year.

Good parents or parents that work full time should not be criminalised for wanting to enjoy an affordable annual family holiday.

Why is this important?

These badly thought out changes will also adversely affect many businesses that rely upon holiday trade from Spring to Autumn. Furthermore the cost of holidays in school holidays will sky rocket as a direct result of these changes.

The Government should reverse these amendments immediately.

Put the responsibility of children back in the hands of the parents and not let the Department of Education think that they have the power to make decisions about our children for us.

Amended - 08/09/2013
Doesn't the government think that holidays can be a source of education. Two years ago I took my 6 year old to Rome on holiday and he loved it. Soon he will be doing a project on Romans at school. He can say that he has been there and to Pompeii. If this isn't education then what is ? The government are so narrow minded. We are supposed to live in a Multi cultural country and me and my wife can't take my son away from school for a short holiday abroad and let him experience other cultures now if not ever because 1) it's too hot abroad in the height of summer that it would be unbearable to the kids and 2) too expensive during school holidays. Soon only rich kids would be able to go on holiday and thats unfair on everyone else. Give power back to the parents to decide with the teachers and allow the teachers to choose absence on an individual basis/circumstances.

I've never felt more strongly about this in my life that's why we need as much support as possible to send a clear message to the government that this law is unacceptable.

If you agree with this petition and would like to help us send a message to the Government, then please sign this petition and then share with your friends and family either by word of mouth or via social networks (Facebook, Twitter etc).

Its only with your help that we can do this.

Amended - 11/09/2013
I've been asked by someone to also add the following to this petition.
"It is difficult for normal families but military families have to fit in holidays around work, training and overseas deployments."
I fully support this, I support all the efforts our Armed Forces do for this country and I would like to mention them in this as well.
This petition effects everyone so please get involved and help us to get this changed.

being a working parent who works with 30 odd other parents, how on earth can we fit out leave into a 6 week period, they will end up not employing mums....... this country is becoming so dictatorial

Signed this petition as this will affect so many children and deprive them of an annual holiday with their family, and it will mostly affect working families. This government should be supporting working families not making life more difficult and inflexible and chipping away at the core of family values that they preach to us is so important. Hypocritical governments as always.

We live in a democratic country (Supposedly) A democracy that our forfathers fought and died for and our military are still doing today..This is not China or North Korea. Both my wife and me work full time and find it extremely difficult to get holidays in school holiday times anyway + we can not afford to pay the extortionate prices that holiday companies charge during these times. Our children ARE NOT the property of the state.

I've just read an article in the Daily Mail regarding a couple that is facing court today in Telford. This is outrageous and this needs to stop. If you would like to read the article please click the link below. If you disagree with parents being fined and facing being taken to court please sign this petition. The more signatures we have the better.

To promote school attendance, local authorities and schools can use a range of legal measures to enforce school attendance. One of these legal measures is the issuing of penalty notices (fines) when a school attendance offence has been committed. The law regarding the issuing of penalty notices have been in existence since 2003. Each local authority must set the criteria for issuing them. The criteria are not set by central Government. Fines are issued to give a parent the opportunity to discharge themselves of any liability of a criminal prosecution. Where a fine is paid in full within the specified time, then the parent cannot be prosecuted for the same offence. However, if the fine is not paid, then the local authority can prosecute the parent for the original offence.

It is important to stress that this change is not designed to penalise any particular parent. It is designed to emphasise that pupils should be in school and absence should be reduced to unavoidable causes not as a result of parents’ convenient. Unfortunately over the past years, there has been a widespread misconception that parents are entitled to take their children out of school during term time for two weeks for an annual family holiday. I must stress that the previous law did not give any such entitlement. Some head teachers were put under pressure by parent to authorise holidays. Our changes back head teachers to make the right decisions. Head teachers still have the discretion to grant leave but only in exceptional circumstances. Where head teachers grants leave, they must determine how much time a pupil can be away from school. Having good attendance should not be a prerequisite for granting leave of absence.

All absences make a difference because the child is not in school to receive their education. It is not just about the children taken out of school that is affected but also the disruption its causes to their classmates and the system as a whole. In the academic year 2011/12 academic year over a million children were taken out of school (mostly in primary schools) for family holidays. This put enormous pressure on teachers planning lessons around these absences.
The Government does not believe that this change would affect business. Most schools only open for a minimum of 190 days in a year, giving parents and their children ample opportunity to enjoy family holidays together.

It is for these reasons that the Government is not planning to revise the law to allow parents to take their children out of school for family holidays during term time.

I would like to know peoples thoughts about it and what you all think should be done next.
I have teamed up with other like minded people who feel strongly as I do about this and are currently thinking a plan to carry on fighting as the media attention and this petition has done nothing.

One of the things that we are working on is a website which as soon as its plan is drawn out I will post on here as well as social media letting everyone know the address.
In the mean time thank you to everyone that has sent me an email in the past few weeks in support of me and the campaign, I'm sorry I haven't had change to email you all back yet but I fully plan to.

If anyone would like to get involved with phase two of this campaign please contact me craiglangman1974@gmail.com

Hi Everyone, I just thought that I would give you an update. For those of you that may not be aware,
The hand-in was completed on Wednesday 30th of October to the Department of Education as well as me appearing on ITV Daybreak, BBC News, Channel 5, BBC Look North, ITV Central News on TV, 8 different radio stations including BBC Radio 5 Live and LBC 97.5 and several National Newspapers.

Since this date there has been a silence from the Department of Education and no one has acknowledged me either by writing, telephone call or email regarding this. However I have received an email in response to my request for a minister at the department of education to meet us on the day of the hand-in. I've posted the response below.

Hand-In to the Department of Education on Wednesday 30th of October.

If you can make it then your very welcome. I will meet everyone outside the Department of Education @ 12:00 noon.

In the mean time if you can get as many people as you can to sign this petition that would be amazing. Lets have a last mass effort to push these numbers to 1 million and beyond.

Only you can help me to make a difference.

Kind Regards

Just thought I would let everyone know what's going on.
I've had various conversations with Staff at 38Degrees who have been very very helpful and they have now passed me on to their PR company who want to take this story to the national press.
I will find out in the next few days when the hand in to the government is likely to be.
I will keep everyone posted on here as to the outcome to that conversation.

Kind Regards
