  • Ban Dangerous Pesticides on the Isle of Wight
The use of toxic glyphosate chemicals in weedkillers has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. We are extremely concerned that our community, including young children and dogs, and our precious wildlife are being routinely exposed to glyphosate that the World Health Organisation states is 'probably carcinogenic'. You may well be aware that attitudes to wild plants have changed in recent decades and that pristine lawns without wild flowers are now outdated. These plants add colour and interest to our parks. They also serve as indicators of a healthy and safe lawn, both for us and for insect pollinators, especially bees, on whose services we depend for our food. • Church Of Scotland: Stop investing in fossil fuels
The Church has a commitment to justice for the poor who are already suffering the worst effects of climate change and have done little to cause it. More frequent and intense hurricanes and flooding, longer and more frequent droughts and sea-level rise is already a reality that millions face across the globe, especially in the developing world. Climate changing is having a negative impact on food security leading to famine and conflict. In addition to the thousands of fatalities caused by these climate disasters many more people are forced from their homes. We accept the science that climate change is being driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. We acknowledge that this is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. We accept, as has been internationally agreed, global temperature rise should be limited to less than 2°C to avert the worst impacts of climate change. The fossil fuel companies have 5 times more coal, oil and gas in their reserves than we can safely burn and stay below 2°C global temperature rise. If no action is taken then these reserves will be burnt and the resulting climate change will be catastrophic. We must keep the oil in the soil, the coal in the hole and the gas beneath the grass. The church should take a moral stand and withdraw its investment from the fossil fuel industry.

  • Stop Spraying Our Streets With Carcinogenic Chemicals
Many independent studies have stated the many health risks associated with weedkiller sprays: http://permaculturenews.org/2012/11/01/why-glyphosate-should-be-banned-a-review-of-its-hazards-to-health-and-the-environment/ ; http://www.drugwatch.com/2015/11/18/roundup-weed-killer-causing-cancer/ ; https://www.rt.com/usa/316995-usa-workers-sue-monsanto-roundup/ ; http://www.naturalnews.com/051450_glyphosate_cancer_risk_Monsanto.html . Street spraying provides a massive risk to all pavement users, especially dogs and young children, and is also contributing to ever decreasing bee numbers. Furthermore, it is undemocratic. Residents are not being advised of when or where spraying will take place and there is currently no option to opt out of having the area around your property sprayed with carcinogenic chemicals that have numerous health risks.

  • Tell ALDI and others, to stop selling Slug Pellets.....they Kill More than Slugs!
Lets kill slugs......and everything that eats them! The main predators of slugs in the UK are hedgehogs, frogs and wild birds, while microscopic predatory nematodes and carabid beetles can also be important. Last year the Aldi said: "We've looked into this and can now assure you that all of our products meet legal requirements and are in line with the market standards. We value your opinion and will be sure to pass your feedback on to the relevant department as our pesticides policy undergoes review this year. Thanks again - Aldi UK Facebook Team" Well yesterday I took a snap of the same SPECIAL BUY toxic product on sale in their store..........obviously Aldi don't care what they destroy........ Selling a product that contains poison in the form of Metaldehyde contradicts and conflicts with Aldi's Corporate Responsibility Policy. Three specific extracts from their CRP on the environment states: To us, a quality product also needs to be made responsibly, so that what we sell is produced with respect for the environment and workers. It's our job to ensure that what you buy at Aldi has been grown, caught or made with care for the environment and that the workers involved are treated fairly. We are working closely with our suppliers and industry partners to ensure you can trust what you buy at Aldi. We are convinced that long term business success can only be achieved if we additionally assume responsibility for people and the environment. On the instructions of the product, in capital letters it states: SINCE THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS METALDEHYDE WHICH IS A POISON AND CAN KILL IF EATEN. IT MUST BE KEPT AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS. SCATTER PELLETS THINLY. On the product under Environmental Protection, it also states: Do not contaminate water with the product or its container The Pesticide Action Network UK published an article that says: "There is widespread concern that there has been an unacceptable number of poisoning incidents especially involving domestic pets, wild animals and birds." There are many safe alternative to using this type of poisonous product, so PLEASE remove it from your stores Aldi, (and other high street businesses/garden centres, etc, etc) and offer safe, none toxic alternatives.

  • Tell the new British Museum Director to drop BP
On 4 April 2016, Hartwig Fischer became the new Director of the British Museum. One of the first decisions he needs to make is whether to renew its five-year sponsorship deal with BP. Please help make the call to #DropBP the biggest noise he hears as he begins his new job. Why #DropBP? This partnership with the British Museum is allowing BP to clean up its dirty image by associating itself with Britain’s most popular tourist attraction – for the annual cost of about two hours’ profit for the oil giant. BP is violating human rights, destroying ecosystems and actively driving the world towards climate catastrophe: • It is going after new sources of highly-polluting fossil fuels in the tar sands and the Arctic, despite opposition from local Indigenous communities and knowing that we need to keep 80% of known fossil fuels in the ground to avoid dangerous climate change. • It is trying to drill dangerous new deepwater wells in the Gulf of Mexico and Great Australian Bight, despite the devastation BP’s Deepwater Horizon spill is still wreaking on the Gulf Coast’s residents and wildlife. • In countries such as Iraq, Egypt, Russia, Azerbaijan and West Papua, it is fuelling conflict and repression and undermining workers’ rights. • It tops the list of firms lobbying against effective climate policies in Europe. • It dodges taxes and takes billions more in UK tax breaks, in this time of supposed austerity. It donates only a tiny proportion back to the arts, in return for high-profile branding. The movement for Fossil Free Culture is gathering strength. Tate recently parted company with BP after 26 years, following intensifying protests and public pressure. Now the British Museum, and other BP-sponsored institutions, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Opera House, the Science Museum, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Edinburgh International Festival, must follow Tate’s lead and #DropBP. This petition is jointly hosted by the PCS Union and the Art Not Oil coalition.

  • A moratorium is not a ban. Ban fracking in Wales.
The scientific evidence of the risks and harms of unconventional gas development mounts every year and we believe that fracked gas has no place in Wales's low carbon future. The 2015 Paris climate agreement, the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act of 2015 and the Environment (Wales) Act of 2016 all make it clear that a swift transition to renewable energy is needed. This is the direction that Wales should firmly take.

  • Energise Wales - move to 100% renewable energy in 20 years
The 2015 Paris climate agreement, the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act of 2015 and the Environment (Wales) Act of 2016 make our moral and legal obligations clear - in the face of potentially catastrophic climate change, we must act now to protect future generations. This transition is totally feasible, both technically and financially, and such a bold programme could be transformative for Wales. It would attract green investment, create tens of thousands of jobs and give Wales ownership of its own energy generation and distribution systems. This would be true energy security and it would give Wales political and economic freedom like never before in its history. ------ Mae Cytundeb Hinsawdd Paris 2015, Deddf Llesiant Cenhedlaethau'r Dyfodol (Cymru) 2015 a Deddf Amgylchedd (Cymru) 2016 yn glir iawn ei ddisgwyliadau moesol a chyfreithiol - yng ngwyneb newid hinsawdd a allai fod yn gatastroffig, rhaid i ni weithredu yn awr i amddiffyn cenedlaethau'r dyfodol. • Secure the full promised restoration of Park Slip Margam Opencast Coal Site.
The alternative 'restoration' plans can not in any way be considered a restoration, merely a 'tidying up' of a site which has devastated and industrialised a rural area which once had wheatfields and rare species habitats. Overbearing tips, totally out of character with the rest of the valley will remain together with a dangerous void, flooded to a depth of over 108 metres. The latter will be the deepest 'lake' or reservoir in England or Wales and will remain as an ongoing hazard within a couple of hundred metres of communities. The only way to make the site safe is to fill in the void with the onsite tips. We want our countryside returned. We want our roads and footpaths reinstated together with bridleways and cycle tracks. This might in some way compensate for the endurance of the local communities who have suffered the opencast, providing profits from more than 4 million tons of coal for the private operator, for twenty years and more. The company has ravaged the valley in reaping the coal and though it signed agreements and gained consents with promises of full restoration, when the time came to 'put it all back' it refused to do so. The local authorities have been floundering unsuccessfully to achieve restoration since 2008 and have finally thrown in the towel and are on the verge of accepting an unsafe, unsatisfactory and inadequate alternative to restoration. It is time that promises were fulfilled. Government intervention is needed to find a way of securing the only acceptable restoration based on the Welsh Government funded Restoration Scheme of April 2013. We have three governments at Wales, Westminster and Brussels; £162 million net goes to Europe on a weekly basis from this country, surely there are funds somewhere to restore this monstrosity, to invest in a decent legacy for the future, to increase biodiversity, develop tourism and leisure, to enhance the local environment, to reinstate and improve the cross valley links. Prior to privatisation, the Secretary of State overturned the local government decision to refuse consent for Park Slip West and therefore Westminster has a direct responsibility for at least half of this site. The presumption for opencast mining in the planning system has led to this devastation, along with inadequate strictures at time of privatisation to guarantee the restoration of opencast mines - a guarantee that was there under the nationalised industry. It is time for the government to take on the responsibility for securing the only acceptable restoration of this site. What is currently being offered is no restoration of any kind. Please support this petition asking the Welsh Government to take on the responsibility for securing the restoration, as promised since 1993 and earlier, of this outrageous insult to the local communities and their environment.
