  • Unlimited attempts to take Literacy and Numeracy Skills Test for PGCE Teacher Training Courses
If you cannot pass the tests in your third attempt, like me, then this holds you back from becoming an outstanding teacher. 2 years is a lot of time and it holds students back from wanting to teach because if you cannot pass after 2 years then you have to wait for another 2 years. I would like unlimited chances to pass Literacy and numeracy skills test to be put back to action because the government is loosing so many highly skilled student teachers as they are unable to pass their qts tests. I am sure most PGCE students would agree with this.

  • STOP PROMOTING SWEETENERS TO CHILDREN: LISTEN
Recent background: 1. In August ’16 Government gave a policy statement in relation to the Sugary Drinks Industry Levy that Key component of Childhood Obesity Strategy is to promote diet drinks. It was no.1 in a list of ‘12 Things You Should Know’, published on the government’s news website. The ‘reformulation’ of products, which currently amounts to replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners, was to be extended to other products deemed too high in sugar, regular yoghurts are among the cited foods. Questions challenging the policy were blocked at the Health Matters Live event in November ’16. Citations of studies and reviews that concluded not enough was known about the safety of sweeteners, were removed from a Wikipedia site on Sugar Taxes. The effect of the strategy has been an escalation in the use of sweeteners by manufacturers, and it is not immediately clear, when choosing items from the shelves in supermarkets, that sweeteners are being used where once they were not. Products may not be described as ‘diet’ or ‘with sweeteners’, other than in smaller print on the ingredients label. (Neotame and advantame may legitimately be used without any mention on the ingredients label.) 2. In January ’17 a Government Health Report announced that for success there needed to be zero price promotions on ‘unhealthy’ products. To use the same example, regular yoghurts are classed as ‘unhealthy’, artificially sweetened ones as the ‘healthy’ option. The effect of this move is to limit the affordable choices for poorer families wanting to give their children a healthy balanced diet with less emphasis on sweet things, but with no artificial sweeteners. All have the right to make informed healthy choices. The right to an informed choice is being eroded. • Relatives rights to Legal Aid for Inquests.
These bodies bring in the best legal representation, often paid for by the public purse. In most cases relatives are left to fend for themselves at a time when they are still grieving for their loved ones. Relatives usually have limited means and little knowledge of legal procedures and will find the inquest intimidating and confusing. Most people will be shocked to find, as I did, that although you wish to represent your loved one you have no disclosure rights, requests to the court are often either ignored or misinterpreted. Without legal representation an expert witnesses will not take instructions to provide expert opinions and analysis to support the family’s case. Many relatives like me are struggling to understand a death which could have been avoided at the same time they are trying to come to terms with a recent bereavement. They are unaware of the types of inquest available such as the standard UK inquest or the more in depth and investigative EU Article 2 Inquest. Coroners, although supposedly independent, are often familiar with the other party’s legal representatives and in some cases have worked in the same legal practice. In some cases the coroner works with the state to secure a quick verdict leaving the relatives facing decades of work to secure the truth. We live in a society where criminals have more rights than victims or their families and I believe this injustice needs reversing. Legal Aid funding should be extended to serve bereaved families who deserve to know the truth about how their relative died. http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/grieving-widower-howard-denby-tried-13265128 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/calls-inquiry-call-over-suicide-6926557 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/carol-denby-killed-herself-after-6981544 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/fathers-despair-delays-cps-review-9682318 http://www.itv.com/news/wales/2013-01-14/robbie-powell-death-report-redactions-uncovered-by-wales-this-week/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4393976/Asthma-girl-s-parents-call-unlawful-death-ruling.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4393976/Asthma-girl-s-parents-call-unlawful-death-ruling.html This is important because for the relatives they need closure and only the truth will give them this and for society in general we have seen too many cover up's and as a consequence many more innocent people have suffered when the truth has been hidden. The loss of Legal Aid has disadvantaged the majority with justice and truth only available to those who can afford to buy their version of it.

  • Reduce Loneliness by introducing intergenerational nursery classes
Throughout my Human Geography degree at Gloucester University I have specialised in learning about the worlds ageing population. An increase in the longevity of people’s lives alongside a declining birth rate has resulted in an ageing population. This means many practical problems have evolved. For example there is an ever increasing strain on healthcare, sheltered housing and an increase in the dependency ratio. An increase in the older generation means the dependency ratio in turn increases; the working section of a population is put under pressure to provide, mostly through taxes for the older generation. However, social stress is occurring which cannot be solved by money alone, there is an ever increasing issue of loneliness within the older generation. Loneliness is a complex and usually unpleasant emotion, which typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connectedness or communality with others. Loneliness can get into every pore of an elderly persons life and can have detrimental effects. I believe it is a very sad reflection that when people are most in need they feel the most abandoned. However, I want us to work together as a community to create a long term and sustainable solution for loneliness in Cheltenham, this would occur by bringing nursery age children into old peoples homes on a regular basis. The two generations would complete activities together which will have benefits for both (as seen on Channel 4 program 'Old peoples home for 4 year olds')
