• Ban Dangerous Pesticides in North Yorkshire
The use of glyphosates has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. It is not acceptable that ourselves, our children and the animals we share our community with are being routinely exposed to these chemicals whether we like it or not. This is a matter of great importance for those of us who care about each other's health and the health of our children, our cats, our dogs and all the flora and fauna of this city, of course including our beloved bees. • A logical approach to vehicle excise duty
The current illogical vehicle tax is based on laboratory determined exhaust emissions. Whilst in theory this might sound a good way collecting revenue and at the same time encouraging owner/drivers to buy more efficient vehicles, it does not take into account other factors. The main factors are, load carried, driving style and distance travelled. For example, the owner of a car with a high perceived emission rating standing in a driveway producing zero emissions can be contributing as much or more to the exchequer than the owner of a so called low emission car being driven a long distance badly and heavily loaded producing lots of noxious gases. So it follows then that the only logical way to tax vehicles (if contaminating the atmosphere is really the criteria) is to put all the levy on to fuel and scrap the current tax system. Maybe not popular with the masses initially, however if explained properly and honestly whilst also demonstrating how the revenue generated is being used, transparent and open policies might eventually be appreciated by all.

  • Bring back the climate change department
By removing the climate change department it is essentially sending a message that says the conservative part don't care about climate change. Theresa May has selected a cabinet that could be detrimental to the environment. The conservatives, in their election promises, promised a greener government. We now have Boris Johnson, a climate change denier, Andrea Leadsom in charge of energy; who had to ask if climate change was real and a team of people just as likely to care little for the environment. Climate change matters to everyone whether left wing or right wing. It is your future, your children's future. Please share the petition hashtag #climatematters More info: https://30daysofwildparenting.wordpress.com/2016/07/16/bring-back-the-climate-change-department/ https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jul/15/decc-abolition-major-setback-for-uk-climate-change-efforts

  • Make a Decision on the Sottish Beaver Trial result!
The report was presented by SNH in June 2015 and as yet no decision has been made. In that time there has been a Scottish Parliamentary election which has seen a change in the minister in charge. There have also been shootings of beaver on the Tay river system that have been uncontrolled and unauthorised which has seen pregnant females being killed, as confirmed by RZSS vets. The Scottish Government response to these actions was effectively a request not to carry on with this activity. Given that there is much evidence to suggest that beaver activity can not only have immediate ecological benefits to the area around beaver ponds but also to population and health of fish such as trout and salmon and help by way of flood prevention down stream, an overall decision would seem a good long term strategy for all concerned!

  • Save Greenwich Sustainability Hub!
Over the lifetime of the Hub, students developed and led their own sustainability projects through our WHOLE EARTH? Fellowships Programme, helped local enterprises recognise and develop their sustainability potential in the Green Impact Enterprise project, reviewed the university’s focus on sustainability in the study programmes working as Sustainability Researchers in the Education for Sustainability initiative, and worked on a number of other projects such as Grow At Home and Behind Your Screen. The Hub provides a great example that illustrates the institutional responsibilities and provides a programme that helps utilise our knowledge, skills, creativity and passions to act responsibly and as active, engaged citizens. The proposed closure of the Hub takes away this opportunity that helps not just the students on many different levels, but also the University, the Students’ Union and the wider community. We also have a crowdfunding page for anyone who would like to help keep the Hub alive - we would be so grateful for any donation, big or small. https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/sustainability-hub
