The outcome if the 2015 general election has shown how unfair the present system of first past the post is - the UKIP party received over 3 million votes and only got one seat in Government and yet the SNP got half that number of votes and got 56 seats!! How is that fair representation? The voices of a huge number of voters are not being heard. This has also affected all of the smaller parties - they are not being heard either.

On the 16th of August 1819 it was the people of Lancashire demonstrating for parliamentary reform that were massacred at Peterloo. This time it is the homeless people of Greater Manchester that are upholding the fine tradition of radical protest in Manchester. They have set up camp near to the central library entrance and are demanding better treatment for homeless people across Greater Manchester. Because the number of homeless people is growing across the UK due to the austerity measures being pursued by our government. Because these people deserve a home. This is a heroic David vs Goliath struggle, and we should make sure David wins!

In a society with freedom of or from religion, it is unfair and abhorrent to force religious views onto children and young people-- especially in schools that ostensibly welcome those from every walk of life.

The victim deserves justice to be brought against her murderer (no matter who that is). Allowing the Metropolitan Police to hide crucial information prevents this and sets a precedence that protecting a murderer is acceptable. On Saturday 18th April 2015, a group of activists occupied the old Bank of England building at 31 Castle Street in Liverpool. This huge building has sat empty for several years, while local homelessness services have seen a dramatic increase in demand for the help they provide. The hearing will take place on the 28th of April. We are petitioning Liverpool City Council and the court judge to not evict the activists and to allow the centre to remain open indefinitely, to meet the acute needs of local people living in poverty. A "perfect storm" of central government cuts, stagnating wages and other unfavourable economic conditions have hit Merseyside the hardest out of any area in the country (While the national average cut in council budgets has been 2.9%, Merseyside councils are facing a reduction of 4.7%) and led to a dramatic increase in homelessness and housing issues, food poverty, fuel poverty and other types of material deprivation. We have therefore set up the "Bank of Love" - the Jess James Community Outreach Centre - inside the abandoned building. As it was mainly the 2008 UK bank bailout that has led to the imposition of damaging austerity policies which are devastating out local communities, we feel it is apt that a former bank building should be used to house, feed and clothe those in need. Inside the bank we have set up a kitchen which has fed hundreds of people since the occupation began, and the big empty rooms above have housed many local people with nowhere else to go. Activists at the bank have also been providing food bags and free shoes and clothing to those in need. Government policy in the form of benefit sanctions (state-approved destitution) and the bedroom tax and changes to council tax benefit are leaving people unable to meet their most basic needs and the most basic needs of their families. Unless and until the government/local council addresses this ongoing breach of human rights, the centre must remain open.

This is important because disabled people are suffering due to austerity cuts made by this government and the very least the government can do to alleviate this suffering is provide them with accessible premises (as any educational or professional establishment is legally obliged to do) for compulsory interviews.

We have very shameful and outrageous goings on regarding the sentencing of Robert Green. Not only was he sentenced for 250 hours of community service, but he has been gagged for the rest of his life not to speak about anything to do with the Hollie Greig case. If he does, he is immediately imprisoned for a maximum of 5 years !!! This is unacceptable and it is time to speak out for this man to be Exonerated and the injustice of this whole case. The Sri Lankan police has a long history of human rights abuses and vicious attacks. Amnesty International’s latest annual report into Sri Lanka alleged that unlawful detentions and torture by security forces were carried out routinely. Since 2007, the Scottish Police College has trained thousands of Sri Lankan officers - including some senior commanders. But training has failed to protect human rights in Sri Lanka. Siobhan Reardon, Amnesty International's programme director in Scotland, said: “Human rights campaigners and family members of people subjected to enforced disappearance were threatened and arrested, and fatal attacks on religious minorities went unpunished.” Also a UN report commissioned by secretary general Ban Ki-Moon found that as many as 40,000 Tamil civilians may have been killed in the last months of the civil war in May 2009, mostly through indiscriminate shelling by Sri Lankan security forces. The police training reform project is funded by the Foreign Office (FCO), was supposed to embed "international standards in police training." But a recent FCO report found instances of torture, deaths in police custody, police abductions and instances of suspects shot and killed as they attempted to flee. The current contract will end on 31 March 2015, but it could be renewed. Police Scotland should not enable human rights abuses in Sri Lanka.
