• A Safer V1 in Tattenhoe
Traffic turning onto V1 at school-run times is heavy and dangerous with cars travelling at 60mph. This is only set to get worse as Tattenhoe Park is developed. • Love Activists Solution Based Proposals to End Homelessness.
The proposals were developed in consultation with the local community, prioritising feedback from rough sleepers at the group's weekly Love Kitchen. Love Activists hope to gather 1250 signatures to force the council to debate the proposals at a full council meeting. Reasoning/Rationale: 1. In May, the Supreme Court ruled that when local authorities make vulnerability assessments, a 'homeless person' should be compared with an 'ordinary person who is at risk of becoming homeless'. There is no doubt that any homeless person is 'significantly more vulnerable' than an ordinary person, therefore everybody living on the street should be assessed as being in priority need. The judgement also made it clear that while councils are often under huge financial strain, this must not be used as an excuse for avoiding their legal duties. To guarantee duty of care and legal obligations are met, all local authorities must provide permanent housing for anybody living on the streets. 2. Housing first pilot project had a 70% success rate in Brighton & Hove - helping 7 out of 10 people with high support needs into accommodation. 3. Extended winter provision: additional services provided over a period of time e.g. every night from November to March. If the material resources exist to provide shelter from a severe weather emergency, economic arguments against keeping the shelters open are not as powerful as the humanitarian ones for opening them. (Copy & pasted from 'Homeless Link') Humanitarian Response: SWEP should be applied responsibly to prevent death at all times; 3 consecutive nights at zero or below is the minimum requirement. Local authorities should consider factors such as wet weather and wind chill, snow coverage and duration of extreme weather when looking at provision. Preventing deaths on the streets is the aim of the protocol, so if this demands more beds and a longer response the local authority should do everything it can to prevent harm to individuals. Economics cannot change the weather any more than economics can determine people's relative vulnerability to each other. 4. It doesn't have to be severely wet to have a severe impact if you're sleeping on the streets. Severely windy, wet weather is an emergency, as is extremely hot, dry weather. Homeless Link offers advice and guidance to BHT, St Mungo's and Brighton & Hove City Council. Currently their minimum definition of severe weather is when the temperature drops below zero for three consecutive nights. (Copy & pasted from 'Homeless Link') There is no strict definition of what counts as ‘severe weather’. Local authorities should proactively identify any weather that could increase the risk of serious harm to people sleeping rough and put measures in place to minimise this. This includes extreme cold, wind and rain. It is important not to presume when, or in what form, severe weather will occur. Sleeping rough is never comfortable, but the suffering is exacerbated by all elements It doesn't have to be severely wet to have a severe impact if you're sleeping on the streets. ('Homeless Link') http://www.homeless.org.uk/sites/default/files/site-attachments/Winter%20provision%20guidance%202015-16.pdf 5. If this doesn't happen there will be no truly affordable places to live and more people will inevitably become homeless. 6. This would make use of empty properties, keep people safe and avoid waste of tax payers money, private money and time spent on security, policing and court costs. (Copy & pasted from 'Homeless Link') In addition to the direct risk associated with severe weather, local authorities should work alongside other local statutory and voluntary services to identify and mitigate actions taken during severe weather that can increase risk for those sleeping rough. For example, people may choose to sleep in riskier places, such as in bins, where they can find cover. They may also enter buildings or property illegally, or increase their substance use as a coping mechanism. 7. No single authority can successfully move to implement all of these measures, because if they 'move first', their service capacity would risk being overwhelmed by people migrating to that local authority. Therefore, we must work towards implementing these measures nationally. [email protected] twitter.com/loveactivists_ facebook.com/loveactivistsbrighton

  • A fair deal for Contract and Temporary workers - SCRAP UMBRELLA PAYMENT SCHEMES
The con-trick has been engineered by Recruitment Agencies, whereby the pay-rate they initially promised to their temp/contract worker is greatly reduced due to them using "Umbrella Pay Schemes" who are the middlemen, to pay their employees. Unfair pay Payslips are often confusing and the cost of employer's national insurance and processing of pay is then passed onto the temp/contractor by the "Umbrella Payment Scheme;" all because the Recruitment Agencies don't want to shoulder the burden of being the actual *'employer.' Many contractors/Temps are also being forced into becoming an unlimited company - this action isn't always practical for the temporary worker as many jobs may only be for few days. *THIS NEEDS TO STOP AS IT AFFECTS, NURSES, CONSTRUCTION WORKERS, TEMP OFFICE EMPLOYEES, THE LOW PAID and ALL OF THOSE WHO ARE JUST SURVIVING due to not enough permanent employment or the need to have flexible working hours Thank you kindly I hope to help not just myself, but others in a similar situation. I am employed by a Recruitment Agency and have been contracting via agencies for sometime; each week I am paid by an "Umbrella Pay Scheme" (Recruitment Agencies middleman). This scheme deducts their "margin" of £30.00 weekly from my pay along with *other deductions. Citation: - Under the umbrella company arrangement the burden of paying both workers’ and employers’ National Insurance contributions (NIC) reportedly fell on the workers, leaving some of them worse off by as much as £100 a week. - See more at: http://www.staffingindustry.com/eng/Research-Publications/Daily-News/Wales-Government-to-stop-use-of-umbrella-payroll-companies-on-all-future-construction-projects-32788#sthash.F7AMjyQs.dpuf

  • Strip Donald Trump of his honorary degree
We feel that Donald Trump's unrepentant, persistent verbal attacks on various groups of people based on nationality, religion, race and physical abilities are a huge detriment to RGU. Hate speech must not have a place in academia, in politics or on the world stage. We are confident RGU will agree with the petitioners, and act swiftly. We would also note the brave opposition of Dr David Kennedy to this degree at the time it was bestowed.

  • Don't Evict Jeff
Jeff is a teacher and he lives on his boat. However the Canal and River Trust (CRT) is demanding that, just after this coming Christmas, Jeff should leave where he has lived for 6 years. Why? After another boat broke Jeff tiller he was unable to move his boat safely. CRT showed no regard for him not being able to move his boat safety. Instead, they gave him a 6 month license to punish him for what they said was unreasonable overstay. He didn't fully challenge this. Then, after travelling approximately 60 miles in 6 months, and not staying longer than 14 days in any one place , CRT refused him a license. He wanted to pay and they refused his payment. They claimed, in an email to Jeff, that this was because he was 'shuffling'. This is an ambiguous and generally misunderstood term with no legal footing. It is used to describe moving back and forth between the same places on the canal. Jeff was simply turned round to get fuel and turned round again to finish his 60 mile journey. We have tried everything we could for Jeff not to have to go to court. But CRT seems hell bent on in their attempts to evict him from his home. We believe CRT have behaved in a totally appalling manner! We demand Jeff is given his licence back.

  • Improve testing and treatment of hypothyroidism
We think there are 10.2 million hypothyroid patients in the UK so this is a significant number. The NHS won't prescribe (see research links on Prezi below) anything other than Levothyroxine because Levo costs £26 a year and T3 costs £1300 per patient per year. This is a case of mindset myopia because our research indicates that the long term cost to the NHS and taxpayer is much higher through prescribing extra medication and hospitals referrals required due to associated conditions such as high blood pressure, heart problems and mental illness etc. The lack of interests from GPs has pushed many hypothyroid patients to self-medication because they are fed up of feeling ill. This means patients are taking strong hormones with no supervision. My Prezi contains the full list of links for the research to put my presentation together - http://prezi.com/0ljwmhl87lnv/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share

  • Krusher Joule
Krusher Joule the living legend first came to the public's attention in 1982 when he became Art Director of the then Bible of Heavy Metal magazine Kerrang!.  Before that he was known as Steve Joule who had worked as a freelance designer in the music industry since 1976 producing work for the likes of Motorhead, Sammy Hagar, Uriah Heep, Gamma, Girlschool, Blondie and The Sex Pistols.  He has designed album sleeves for Hawkwind 'Live ’79', Gary Moore 'Dirty Fingers' and 'Live at the Marquee', Iron Maiden 'Live After Death', Ozzy Osbourne 'Diary of a Madman', 'Speak of the Devil' and 'Bark at the Moon', Japan and Black Sabbath 'Born Again' which apparently Ian Gillan, the then vocalist with the band was quoted as saying; “I took one look at the cover and puked!”, whilst both Deicide’s Glenn Benton and Soulfly’s Max Cavalera have claimed it to be their favourite album sleeve of all time.  Also whilst still working for Kerrang! Krusher designed a series of official biography books including Iron Maiden’s 'Running Free', Motley Crue’s 'The First Five Years' and Twisted Sister’s 'The First Official Book' and not forgetting tour programmes for AC/DC, Deep Purple, Robert Plant, Anthrax, Accept and Europe.  His work has also included designing and editing the official Donington 'Monsters of Rock' programmes since 1986 and he has also compered and DJ’ed the festival in 1994, ’95 and ’96.  In 1989 Krusher was offered his own radio rock show, 'Krusher’s Metal Mayhem' by the BBC which he presented on Greater London Radio. He was also approached to host and DJ the rock night at the Hippodrome club in the heart of London’s West End.  It was a club night that would regularly see eighteen hundred people crowd into the venue where they would be treated to impromptu live performances by the likes of Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Motorhead who all frequented the club on a regular basis as did Metallica, Motley Crue and Iron Maiden or whichever rock band was passing through town that week. Unfortunately like all good things both the radio show and the club came to an end, but not before becoming landmarks in the history of London rock.  In 1992 Krusher became co-presenter along with his Jack Russell terrier Bullseye of 'Raw Power' the UK’s only terrestrial TV rock show and voted best TV show in the Kerrang! Readers poll in both 1992 and ’93.  In 1994 the show changed its name to 'Noisy Mothers' a name which Krusher hated, always believing it should have been called 'Watch with Motherf****r' but which again was voted best TV show by Kerrang! and Metal Hammer readers for the next two years. Sadly Christmas 1995 saw the last ever 'Noisy Mothers' broadcast, the powers that be in TV land deciding that rock was a dying industry and therefore warranted no place on our TV screens.

  • Spend Defence budgets on Defence
If the Paris attacks had been carried out by ETA (Basque Separatists) there would be no call to bomb Spain. Involvement in Syria and Iraq results in killing innocents. Their family and friends then become OUR enemies where they were previously for the West. Nuclear weapons are no deterrent as an attack may come from any country and it may not be that country responsible. The £millions spent on offensive weapons could instead strengthen border checks which would save us money by cutting smuggling. Drones are becoming more accurate and cheap. Drones which can kill a terrorist leader can be used to kill any leader. Governments should be investing in defensive measures for themselves and the rest of us. Bombing thousands or even millions is not a proportionate response. We do not kill members of organizations to which murderers belong, nor do we kill their family and friends. Someone in IS in Syria or Iraq MAY have planned the Paris attacks but if we don't know exactly who then why are we killing people there? Spend the so-called Defence Budget on real Intelligence and policing instead and make us all safer, not less safe.

  • Save Cambridgeshire Lollipop ladies and men
These are two of the main commuter routes in and out of the city and as council members will be aware they are extremely busy and dangerous at peak times. These are also the times when children are traveling to and from our local primary schools and to expect our children to cross either of these main roads unassisted would pose an unacceptable danger to such young people. The parents and residents of Abbey Ward understand that unprecedented financial pressures are faced by our local government, particularly in light of even greater cuts in the chancellor’s autumn statement. But by removing this vital public service the council will open themselves up to even greater financial risk if and when these obvious dangers result in injury or worse. We do not believe it necessary to wait for this awful outcome and call on the council to do the right thing for the sake of our children. The parents and residents of Abbey Ward, together with Abbey People, invite the County Council to enter into dialogue with Abbey People in order to discuss realistic alternatives and funding opportunities in order to keep this necessary service for the community. https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/-/lollipopladycby.jpeg

  • Save Ramsgate Sprint Revival
Ramsgate Sprint Revival in 2015 was a brilliant event generating huge interest locally in Thanet and beyond. This event brought over £350,000 to the Ramsgate area and many 10,000's of people from the locality, from around the UK and abroad. We, the people of Ramsgate and Thanet, ask that the Council permits this event to run, through joint discussions with the much smaller event which could be moved to either another date or to use one of the other parks such as Ellington Park or King George VIth Park.

  • Call on Labour MPs to support Jeremy Corbyn on Syria
The recent Labour Party conference agreed four conditions that would have to be satisfied before military action could be supported. None of these have been satisfied: 1. Clear and unambiguous authorisation from the United Nations. As reported by the BBC, UN Security Council resolution 2249 carried last week does not provide a legal basis for military action by the UK and does not invoke Chapter VII of the UN charter authorising the use of force. 2. A comprehensive EU-wide plan to provide humanitarian assistance to the consequent increase in the number of refugees. In fact, the EU refugee plan is unravelling and the approach to refugees is highly fragmented. 3. That bombing is exclusively directed at military targets directly associated with 'ISIL'. There is evidence that around 90% of drone strike victims in other conflicts were unintended casualties. 4. That any military action is subordinated to international diplomatic efforts, including the main regional powers, to end the Syrian civil war. The shooting down of a Russian plane by Turkey in addition to differing approaches to the Assad regime and a continuing multifaceted conflict make a broadly-based, sovereign Syrian government that could retake territory currently controlled by ISIL a diminishing prospect. We would all like to see the defeat of IS. The future of the Assad government should be determined by the Syrian peoples alone and not by Western intervention. What is certain is that further bombing will increase the humanitarian crisis and cause civilian loss of life. Recent wars have created the sort of stateless societies in which terrorist groups like ISIL can thrive, as recently admitted by Tony Blair when he stated that the invasion of Iraq created the conditions for the rise of ISIL. Jeremy Corbyn was elected by 59.5% of voters. It's time to stand by the democratically expressed will of the party members.
