• No West Suffolk Council merge without a vote for residents
There should be no such drastic and permanent change without a mandate given by the public. Local councillors, such as Cllr Pat Hanlon, have expressed concerns that merging the councils will take away representation from local communities. There are fears that Bury St Edmunds will become the main hub, with Newmarket, Brandon, and villages in between feeling more isolated and less represented than they already do. Indeed, Colin Copus, professor of local politics, says "the larger the units of local government become, the greater the damage done to a range of democratic criteria, such as trust in councillors and council officers." Given that the case for merging is going to affect the lives of all local residents, and that referendums on mergers were given to other communities such as Christchurch/Dorset and Baberg/Mid Suffolk, we the undersigned call on the Councils to give all local registered voters a free, fair and open referendum on the merger. Don't forget to share the petition when you've signed! Thanks.

  • Family, Child and Travel Rights.
The reason the Home Office gives for denying access to the UK to Foreign Nationals married to British Citizens is to avoid paying them Welfare, but, in prohibiting family's from reuniting in the UK they have created single parent family's that are much more likely to be dependant on Welfare, and, they have caused the family members great upset making them more likely to be dependant on Welfare, and, by forcing applicants to apply for work they have no experience of, that is above their pay scale, they remain out of work and on Welfare. Also, as 47% of UK workers do not earn £18,600, and, 70% of all Family Visa applications fail, and, the very high cost of a Visa, and, the quantity of the application forms are so numerous you need to pay a lawyer thousands of pounds to file them, the HC-194 Immigration Law, for nearly half the UK Labour Market, approxamatly 15,000,000 people, is no more than a Travel Ban probably meeting targets. This 'Ban' segregates foreigners from the UK, devides and destroys familys, seperates children from their parents causing them great upset even trauma, and traps adults and children in War Zones and Third World Countries putting their lives in danger. The HC-194 Immigration Law needs to be repealed.

  • Make Leeds a Trump Free Zone
We oppose the racism, sexism, bigotry and Islamophobia of Donald Trump, including his recent retweeting of the far right group Britain First. This attempt to whip up divisions is not welcome in a multicultural city like Leeds or anywhere else in Britain. Leeds Stand Up to Trump.

The real consequences if Brexit occurs are becoming increasingly apparent and have huge negative consequence for the people of the UK. Better to pull out now than to keep going on this course just because the process was started

  • Allow fortnightly council newspaper publications
The Government has instructed councils to stop fortnightly publications of council newspapers. Councils have received a legal direction from Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The national ‘Code of Recommended Practice on Local Authority Publicity’, published in 2011, states council newspapers should be published no more than quarterly. Some councils continue to publish fortnightly newspapers. It saves money on advertising statutory notices and provides a chance to keep residents up-to-date with services, events and opportunities in their borough. The Council has a legal duty to publish statutory notices – such as proposed traffic measures and certain planning applications – in a newspaper. Some councils are currently publishing these in council newspapers and publishing these fortnightly. Producing a council newspaper on a quarterly basis and paying to advertise statutory notices in the local press might cost £100,000 more than current production of a council newspaper fortnightly costs. The local press also has a far lower circulation than a door to door delivered council newspaper, meaning fewer people would see the information. Council newspapers also focuses on stories about council services, initiatives and consultations, and community events and opportunities. It also provides space for local groups, charities and organisations to highlight their work. Much of this content is not covered in the local press. Many residents value their council newspaper for these reasons. It is often particularly valued among older residents, disadvantaged groups, and people who have limited access to the internet and social media.

  • Stop Donald Trump State visit
Racism and hatred are like cancer, they advance by incremental steps and poison democracy. The history of the 20th century proves this so, and we should have nothing to do with this most racist, mysogynistic, sexist, untruthful, undemocratic president that the USA has ever elected.

  • Cancel Trump's UK visit
He is normalising hatred, inciting fear and interfering in UK politics. As allies, we need to make it clear that his behaviour is unacceptable and that, until he changes his position, he is unwelcome.

  • Royal Wedding Present - House the Grenfell residents
A lot of traumatised people are still living in temporary accommodation, almost 6 months after the fire. It would be reasonable to assume that Prince Harry and Megan Markle would be appalled by this and, consequently, delighted that the occasion of their wedding may in some way help to rehouse them. We're calling on The Rt Hon. Liz Truss MP, Chief Secretary to the treasury, to finance this, as a wedding present from the nation to them.

  • Lower the voting age to 16
The voting age should be lowered to 16 because we think that people are responsible enough to know what they are voting for and they are deciding their future. 16 year olds are eligible to join in the army but are not allowed to vote for who makes the decisions that change their future. They are many other things they can do like learn to drive a car which is a big responsibility.
