• Save the Orpheus Ballroom, Belfast from demolition
We have less than a week to go, the Orpheus (built 1932) is on death row. There have been so many lovely old buildings demolished in Belfast and Northern Ireland in the name of 'progress'.The developers moved in and they haven't stopped since 1998.

  • Restore three mile UK fishing limit.
The 3 mile limit was done away with by Margaret Thatcher. since then this indiscriminate fishing has decimated undersized stocks, wrecked the sea bed and coral reefs, and ruined the vital breeding grounds for many marine creatures. Fishing using pots and creels could continue as these cause little damage and undersized catch are returned.

  • Commemorate Horwich Loco Works War Dead
A fitting tribute to our fallen heroes. As we look to remember and pay tribute to those who died serving our country an opportunity may have arisen to honor those closer to home once again. The Horwich Loco Works housing development (Rivington Chase) has now commenced and we at Horwich First would like to appeal to the developers (Bluemantle) to commemorate and honor all the former employees of the Locomotive Works who fought and died in both World Wars by naming each and every Street, Road, Close, Way and Avenue after our fallen heroes. 122 Former Loco Work employees names are etched into the war memorial that stands at the front of the Loco Works. This has stood as a fitting and lasting tribute for nearly 100 years. We feel it would be a wonderful gesture to see a continuation of this connection between those ex employees and the place they once worked, creating a lasting memorial between both our existing community and those that will shortly arrive to take up residence on the former Loco Works site. If you would like to support this appeal please sign our petition and share with family and friends. To the everlasting memory of our glorious dead, lest we forget.

  • Stop Global Warming!
I, and my children, are rather averse to choking on the effluent of 'big business': there will be NO big business if we all choke or end up massacred in 'emissions' trade wars!

  • Stop the closure of the DLI Museum
This Museum has housed the Durham Light Infantry's (DLI) Trustees collection for nearly 50 years. It has become a memorial and focal point of the sacrifice made by soldiers from the tyne to the tees and beyond. The council wishes to save money by warehousing the main collection and displaying items in travelling temporary exhibitions. This will mean no permanent home for the collection which they have a duty to provide a home for. The council also has proposals to dispose of the site for redevelopment. Something that greatly disturbs the families of those soldiers who had their ashes scattered in the grounds. We all have family and friends who served and sacrificed in the DLI and other regiments and armed forces, I believe we all need to stand up and be counted. This is a step to far ! Yes the council have tough decisions to make trying to find savings. But this is not one they should make. Reverse this closure decision now! If you agree please sign up to this petition.

  • Stop the proposed Road Closures Hackney London Fields Ward
Hackney Council are preparing to close 13 road junctions within the London Fields and Haggeston Wards without having a consultation period for the local residents and businesses who live and work in the area. The proposed road closures will have a major impact on how the local residents and businesses will be able to go about their day to day activities. The traffic will be displaced onto Richmond Road, Lansdowne Drive, Trederwen/Brougham Road, Pownall Road and Brownlow Roads and will impact on the neighbouring wards. Hackney Council together with the Streetscene Department have met with the London Cycle Campaign in Hackney & Living Streets and with two local residents from Middleton Road who were selected by Hackney Councillors and they are responsible of this unacceptable scheme. Hackney Council design and engineering department for Streetscene have prepared draft plan of the roads to be closed off but have not issued the plan for consultation which they agreed to do at the ward meeting in July 2015. The Streetscene department have been discussing the proposed street closures with the Mayor Jules Pipe and the cabinet member Feryal Demirci to move straight into a live trial rather than undertake a leaflet based public consultation. Hackney Streetscene have previously confirmed they would be a 1 month consultation period followed by a 1 month trial period and have now gone back on their word.Hackney Council cannot be trusted.

  • stop employers disciplining staff for being off sick
The International Human Rights Charter allows everyone to right to rest from work without the fear of punishment. Current employment conditions contravene this 'enshrined' right, as when an employee misses work due to illness, they can be subjected to a disciplinary process for being off work due to the illness. Although employers try to avoid this by stating they do not care for the reasons for them being off, just the fact they were. If it is abundantly clear an employee is off for ill health and they state so, then any disciplinary action taken contravenes that individuals right to rest from work. Also the term 'rest from work' should cover illness even if a doctors certificate is not produced. Current self certification plays into the hands of employers.

  • re-assign funding to child and adolescent mental health
The pressures faced by children and teenagers now are more harsh than ever. The pressure to succeed in a failing school system, the pressure to get the best GCSE and ALEVELS, family pressures, and children who have an intrinsic mental health concern, all these pressures have increased, and the support services that would enable a child to access support have not only stayed static, but in many cases have reduced in size. Last year 800 children aged 11 and under needed treatment in a and e for injuries caused by self harm, each week there is news of another teen suicide, or an autistic child that cannot receive access to a vital service, this needs to change, and fast, before a whole generation is lost. This vital service can no longer be a Cinderella service.

  • BAN E-CIGARETTES IN PUBLIC PLACES IN ENGLAND
This is important because people should not have to inhale the smoke or vapour from these as they still contain nicotine and sometimes horrible smells, (alternative tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and waterpipes may cause serious potential health problems, including cancer, because of the chemicals and toxins they contain, ( info from www.cancer.net)) As public spaces increasingly become smokefree, anecdotal reports show some people are using e-cigarettes indoors and in smokefree public spaces, including bars, restaurants and on public transportation. While e-cigarettes do not produce smoke, they do expose others to secondhand emissions. Little is known about these emissions or the potential harm they may cause. Two initial studies have found formaldehyde, benzene and tobacco-specific nitrosamines (all carcinogens) coming from those secondhand emissions. Other studies have shown that chemicals exhaled by users also contain formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other potential toxins. There is no evidence that shows e-cigarettes emissions (secondhand aerosol) are safe for non-users to inhale, and now there might be some containing cannibis which everyone in the place where they are smoked will be subject to it no matter how little it contains. They are already being banned in Wales and in some USA States, and other places. I have already had cancer and do not want myself or others who have suffered this horrible disease to have to endure the stress these can cause when they are having a meal out in a restaurant, as has happened to me each week, or in the cinema, theatres, etc, also they could make young teens and children become addicted to them as I do not think there is an age limit on them.

  • Waltham Forest - SAVE OUR ICE CREAM MAN - The Ridgeway Park
Mike Bell and his father have served ice-creams, hot dogs etc since 1996 at The Ridgeway Park in Chingford. He has a contract for his pitch with Waltham Forest Council, which is renewed every three years, this contract also included selling his ice-creams etc on Chingford Day. This year he was excluded from the park on Chingford Day but at the last minute, after pressure from the local press was allowed to sell outside the park. http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/13632588.Licensed_ice_cream_vendor__banned__from_trading_at_council_festival/ He has been informed by LBWF Head of Parks that his pitch will be put out to tender. This means that the highest bidder will be awarded the site which in turn will mean higher prices to families to cover the increased fees of the pitch.
