• Petition for the Return to Use of Hartlepool Hospital
Hartlepool is a city of 100,000 people. Our General Hospital, later called the University Hospital of Hartlepool, covered not just that population, but another 100,000 people in towns and villages to the North of Hartlepool. Since the closure of our Accident Emergency and the moving of many of our services from our state of the art modern hospital to another hospital to the South, some fifteen miles away of Hartlepool, there have been higher than expected annual death rates; to the extent that it has become a matter of concern. it takes a full extra 30 minutes to arrive at A&E from Hartlepool, and it takes more than an hour to arrive at that same overcrowded A&E from other local areas. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/07/14/article-0-141053F5000005DC-371_634x729.jpg The ill and infirm, and anyone who wishes to visit them, have a very long journeys when sick, or to visit. This is intolerable hardship when a hospital still stands which could serve all the needs of the local population. This not only increases the financial hardship in terms of travelling costs, but it increases travelling times and the need to travel for all of the staff too. To add to this all of the data regarding privatisation has shown that patients are not the first priority. Fortunately we have been promised that a fully funded national service is now within our remit and a solid possibility, and this will better serve the population and less profit will go to large business based in other countries. We ask for direct funding to again have the NHS and the Hospital which our society deserves.

  • Abbey Meadow Outdoor Pool: Listen to Abingdon!
Democracy and the future of the outdoor pool! Future of the pool! The pool is outdated and needs investment. The lining is cutting children's feet and may fail at any time, resulting in a hefty bill or the closure of the pool. Democracy! We voted for the pool to be refurbished and it is not being refurbished. The decision has been made by a councillor from Wantage, so we can't even vote her out! Three explanations have been given by the Vale. 1) It is too expensive: but the Vale have not got any estimates from pool contractors, or assessed what could be done with the 307,500 which would be half of the available capital budget. 2) Non-voters have to be considered: the Vale have also said that although 81% of people who voted chose Option A, this was only 3206 people in Abingdon (about 10%), and so the vote can be ignored. This is not democratic... and very concerning. Only the views of those that participate in democracy can contribute to democratic process. In fact, this had the highest participation of any consultation ever held in Abingdon, reflecting the importance of this issue. If everyone in Abingdon had voted, perhaps the majority would have been even higher! We just left the EU on a 4% difference with 28% non-participation, but apparently democracy only applies to the 'big' decisions 3) That we 'misunderstood' the consultation and that refurbishment meant 'repair' and not capital investment: I made a formal complaint to the Vale on this matter, the response to the complaint concluded that we did not in fact misunderstand anything and that 'the current planned works are not consistent with the description of scenario A in the consultation... anyone 'voting' for scenario A and contributing to the 81% overwhelming preference for scenario A would be disappointed with the council's planned works'

  • EDM243 on Remaining in the EU
PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO CONTACT YOUR MP. EDM243 states: That this House notes that the EU membership referendum was lost by only 1.25 million votes, 1.9 per cent; further notes that 3.7 million people have called for a second referendum in a petition as the winning margin was less than 60 per cent and the turnout less than 75 per cent; notes that the decision is binding on future generations; notes that the pledges to reinvest £350 million in the NHS and to curb immigration on which voters relied have been withdrawn; believes that UK citizens must agree on the terms of leaving the EU and, if not satisfied, be given the opportunity to opt for the UK to remain an EU member; calls on the Government to ensure that there will be a referendum allowing UK citizens to agree on the terms of the UK-EU exit package and associated constitutional changes or on the option to remain; and further believes that this referendum should be called before Article 50 is triggered.

  • Keep EU laws that stop us being over worked
Lack or work life balance destroys family life. The UK is near the top of the list of countries for working the longest hours. As a teacher and union rep I have seen that overwork causes stress and mental and physical illness. Taking away the working time directive due to leaving the EU will only make this worse as it will take away the protection of breaks in the working day and the limit to hours overall. The law gives EU workers the right to a minimum number of holidays each year, rest breaks, and rest of at least 11 hours in any 24 hours; restricts excessive night work; a day off after a week's work; and provides for a right to work no more than 48 hours per week.

  • Nigel Farage should resign as MEP
It is utter hypocrisy for you to continue to draw your salary after June 2016. You should go out and look for a proper job.

  • Keep Cornwall fully funded
Not only do Cornwall's farmers and fisherman currently receive benefits from the European Community's Common Agricultural Policy and Common Fisheries Policy but the county has received tens of millions of pounds a year in structural and convergence funds to support local economic growth and communities. In the 2014-2020 budget Cornwall had been allocated 592 million euros. Should Britain leave the EU before 2020 it is essential that this allocation is matched to continue the growth and development which Cornwall needs.

  • Teachers against Gove as Conservative leader
Michael Gove has been the most divisive Education Secretary in living memory. He has undermined the teaching profession and the education system and set children up to fail. We believe his repeated grave errors of judgement make him unfit to lead the country and we do not wish to serve a government with him at its head.

  • Keep UK maternity rights if we leave the EU
Maternity rights protect every woman in the UK. They make sure we aren’t passed over for promotion due to being on maternity leave or that we can come back to the same (or similar) job after time away. Here are the main maternity rights under threat, let's make sure they're protected as we leave the EU: Maternity leave of up to a year Maternity pay for 39 weeks Reasonable paid time off for ante-natal appointments (and the ability for partners to now accompany you) Contractual rights should continue during maternity leave, including accrual of holidays and pension contributions The right to return to the same job if taken up to 26 weeks’ leave and right to return to a similar position if over 26 weeks Redundancy protection Protection from dismissal and detriment due to pregnancy/maternity leave

  • Taking back control of essential services & industries
In the post brexit world it will be essential for our country to be in full control of all the means necessary to survive. On our own we would have a diminished ability to negotiate favourable terms with the rest of the world and In such circumstances we cannot risk putting ourselves into a position where we can be held to ransom by any foreign government or multinational corporation. The only way this can be guaranteed is to own and control all the things required to be self sufficient in what will become a hostile trading climate.

  • Reform or abolish the House of Lords as it is unelected and undemocratic
We have elected to leave the EU, one of the main campaign issues was that the EU Commission is not Elected. The House of lords is Also NOT Elected, so therefore unfair and undemocratic, lords are appointed not elected by the people. For example; David Cameron can appoint more Tory peers to the House of Lords.

  • Higher penalties for acts of racism and hate crime
We need to make it clear that this is not acceptable behaviour in our society. We need to act quickly in the wake of the increase in reported crimes of this nature to protect those at risk.

  • Counteract racism and xenophobia
Do you need to know? I have experienced racism. For a white English native this is probably unusual. For me, the thing that I most wanted was for a load of random people to come up to me and tell me they're glad I'm here. When you hear one racist outburst, you immediately feel that many people must think the same way but don't express it. You wonder what proportion of people begrudge your presence. In my experience, the people who aren't racist are embarrassed by those who are. They feel that it's better to just ignore them and act as though they don't exist. But what is really needed, is for people to come and admit, yes there are some, but not me, and not me, and not me, and not me. WE are ALL happy that you are one of US.
