• Refund University Fees for Periods of Missed Teaching
Students deserve to be reimbursed for the period of teaching that was heavily disrupted by this year's unforseen circumstances. Due to the disruption, university students were suddenly transferred to online teaching, most of which was sub-standard allowing only a small portion of the missed period to be made up. This does not warrant the extortionate fee of up to £9,250 for a university education. Students should be offered full reimbursements of fees as compensation for the poor quality of teaching including, but not limited to, online lectures, online discussion forums as tutorial substitutes, cancelled field trips, unnecessary accommodation fees and delayed grading. Alternatively, students should be given the opportunity to repeat periods of missed teaching caused by the strikes or the COVID-19 pandemic, without incurring any extra fees.

  • Petition for the urgent reopening of Clovenstone Community Centre
As the only remaining Community Centre in the Wester Hailes area it is a vital hub, providing a safe welcoming space for people to meet and interact, where they can make new, and strengthen existing community bonds. We have never needed the facilities more than now, and would urge the council to consider reinstating their staff to run groups within the centre, in the same safe and considered way as their staff in schools.

  • Introduce Speed Restriction on A980 Beltie Road (Sundayswells)
We, the residents of the area (also known locally as Sundayswells) have long campaigned for necessary action to be taken due to the built up nature of the stretch, also leading down Beltie Road. We believe a 30mph zone is required in addition to enforcement of the limit by Police Scotland. We, the residents, believe this is a very dangerous stretch of road with multiple dwellings roadside, and is used as a footpath and cycle path for young. Recent events of a car leaving the road and ending up down a bank prove that not enough due care and attention is given by road users. Only by reducing this speed limit may we see a reduction in the speed cars and heavy good vehicles pass by our community.

  • HM Government must improve Coronavirus testing
Across the UK care home staff, social care workers and NHS staff are still calling for better and more frequent testing to allow them to avoid infecting their patients and their colleagues. Better testing leads to less virus transmission, which in turn leads to fewer deaths. We call on the government to put resources and effort behind the production, distribution and processing of Coronavirus tests to make better use of available laboratory testing capacity. * Test laboratory capacity on Mon 3 Aug 2020: 338,413 Daily tests processed on Tue 11 Aug 2020: 164,061 Data from coronavirus.data.gov.uk on Thu 13 Aug 2020.

  • Give English pupils grades teachers predicted
Because our children’s lives matter: our young people have already suffered enough from coronavirus & interruption to their education. They are in despair over the awards process which has given generally poorer results awards today than predicted, & don't deserve to have their whole lifetime ruined. We must stand together to show them we believe in them, & use the weight of our support to get this right for them. This is too serious for delay: pupils are likely to lose their university places if they have to wait til next week to know how to appeal, make the appeal, & wait again while the thousands of appeals are processed. Pupils across the board stand to lose out for their whole lifetime if this is not put right IMMEDIATELY by accepting teacher predicted grades as Scotland has recognised & done. Our country will lose the contribution these talented young people can make to us in recovery & rebuilding, already our brightest pupils hoping to go into medicine science & IT are considering applications to foreign universities to study the subject & follow the career of their choice - they may never return to work here. Others will make decisions which may not make the most of their talents. Frustration, disappointment, mental health issues are likely to bring far reaching personal consequences if this failure in the grades awards process is not put right now.
