  • Keep University of Portsmouth's fees at £9000
The University of Portsmouth informed its students via email on 7/11/2016 that both new and continuing students will be forced to pay £9,250 for the next academic year. Every year seems to hold another increase to our ever-growing piles of debt. Scrapping the maintenance grant in exchange for a bigger loan. Increasing the interest rate at which we pay them back. At the current rate tuition fees will surpass £10,000 within the next few years and I've had enough. I didn't sign up expecting my fees to increase during my time here and regardless of the fine print the University didn't communicate this information to me before starting my degree, nor did they before I started this academic year. Current students should not see a fee increase. As Faculty Representative for Technology I feel it is my duty to speak out against the Universities decision to raise fees and urge my colleagues to do the same. I've been a proud student at Portsmouth since 2014. It's ignited my passion for learning, helping others and you won't find somebody with more love for this city. It's hard to believe as somebody who left college with a BTEC in music and no sense of direction years ago I now stand to graduate at the end of my course with an integrated Masters in Mechanical Engineering. By letting these fees increase all we do is discourage people from making that leap. I've directed this petition to Paul Hayes, who spoke last year at the course rep conference, who assured me that our voice matters. This affects every student current and future and if we do not take a stand now, the problem will only grow.

  • Carers' allowance
Carers' save the government millions of pounds by caring for the elderly in their own homes and it is a disgrace that the carer is penalised by having their allowance cut just because they are in receipt of their pension. Many, like myself, have had to give up work to care and it causes financial hardship.

  • Liz Truss Should Resign
Recent attacks on the judiciary are an attack on our plural democracy -- an attack on our representative democracy with a number of independent institutions which act as checks and balances to one another. The failure of the Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary to defend the judiciary against these attacks -- when they are merely doing their duty in ensuring that the government acts in accordance with the law and respects parliament -- marks either a massive failing to understand our form of government or a wanton disregard of fundamental underpinnings of our plural democracy in the face of party interests. This marks a key move in the Trumpization of the governance of our country.

  • To Protect English Green Belts.
This action would be in consonance with Mr Javid’s statement of 18 July 2016 when he said that “The Green Belt is absolutely sacrosanct. We have made that clear: it was in the Conservative party manifesto and that will not change. The Green Belt remains special. Unless there are very exceptional circumstances, we should not be carrying out any development on it.” We consider it the duty of Mr Javid to fulfil the Conservative Manifesto 2015 wherein it states the party will “…ensure local people have more control over planning and protect the Green Belt.” and “We will protect the Green Belt. We have safeguarded national Green Belt protection and increased protection of important green spaces.” and that “Our plan of action: We will protect your countryside and Green Belt and urban environment … we will protect the Green Belt …”. The public must have confidence that this Conservative Government will in practical terms protect Green Belt as it has been claiming it would. The Planning Inspectorate, in examining Local Plans submitted by Local Authorities, is currently approving some Plans which seek to move established Green Belt boundaries in order to enable the building of, inter alia, new homes to meet unmet housing demand. While it is recognised that new housing is needed in England, building on Green Belts is directly contrary to the Government’s stated Policy Guidance and specific Green Belt Policies, and further it is often contrary to the wishes of the established communities in or adjacent to those Green Belt areas. The Government claimed in 2011 that they were protecting Green Belts by revoking the Regional Plans. But now Government is imposing unattainable housing targets on Local Authorities who are constrained by established Green Belt land. If these housing targets are not met, despite the constraints, the Local Authority will be fined and the Government will step in to enforce a local plan on the district. The Local Authorities are being bullied by Government into moving Green Belt boundaries, not only in contradiction of Government’s own policy, but contrary to paragraph 80 of the NPPF which sets out the five purposes of Green Belt. The Government has remained consistent across several years and various Ministers with its stated support for protecting the Green Belt and green spaces. It is noticeable that under the Coalition Government, Conservative Ministers were more vociferous about protecting our Green Belt than they have been since being in sole control of our country. Nonetheless, the current Government’s Manifesto and relevant planning policy remains unchanged. The originator of this petition has collected 21 Ministerial Statements and a Statement by the Mayor of London which variously supports the principle that the Government will protect the Green Belt and that the need for housing does not outweigh the exceptional circumstances required to build inappropriately in the Green Belt. We are only asking for this Government to make good on its promises. • GM food trial going ahead in U.K.
Science has not yet proven that GM food do not have a health changing impact on fauna and the environment. Neither in the USA nor in UK or Europe are consumers interested in GM modified foods. Please urge this government to stop licensing GM modified foods until science can prove, that these food will have no impact on any living beings health. Perhaps we should encourage all world citizens to stop breeding like rabbits and take birth control. Than there will be no need to destroy nature for GM foods and agriculture. Perhaps we humans could learn something from Badgers

  • Save Salisbury's Wildflower Meadow
The building of a three-story GP surgery is being proposed to replace three of the four surgeries in Salisbury, with the favoured location situated south of Lime Kiln Way to the west of Odstock Road, grid reference SU145282. Just three years ago the proposed site was designated a County Wildlife Site, and it supports a large population of wildflowers, insects, and birds. This site is of great importance not just because of its beauty and the luxury of having a patch of natural meadow on Salisbury’s doorstep, but also due to the sad fact that in the last 70 years Britain has lost 97% of its wildflower population[1]. Even if you do not have a particularly strong feeling towards wildflowers, you must appreciate the sheer importance of having a site like this to support insects and the birds that depend on them. Other options for the site’s location include the now-empty Friends Provident buildings in Castle Street, and the agricultural field directly opposite the proposed site, to the east of Odstock road. In total there are 17 proposed sites, with Lime Kiln Way being preferred presumably because it is cheaper to build on as it is owned by the Council. This proposed site will inevitably lead to increased traffic at the already highly-congested Harnham interchange, which would in turn lead to difficulties getting ambulances to and from Salisbury District Hospital as residents would need to get buses or taxis to get there. Though we all understand the need for a new surgery in Salisbury, our argument is that the currently-favoured site is not suitable. As a local resident I have seen many oil beetles there (three of the UK’s native oil beetles are extinct, and the remaining five species are on the decline[2]), among the numerous species of wildflowers, and the Red Bartsia Bee is also a resident to the site. The land surrounding the site supports breeding birds such as the curlew, lapwing, snipe, redshank, and turtle doves. This is a small, precious refuge of natural green space that is incredibly rare to find in a city – especially one undergoing concentrated housing development like Salisbury. On behalf of my fellow residents in Harvard Heights and East Harnham (both areas share boundaries to the Lime Kiln Way site), I implore Salisbury City Council and local MP John Glen to look more closely into more suitable, alternative locations, and preserve the rare habitat that we can still enjoy in Salisbury. The Lime Kiln Way site offers a sanctuary for flora and fauna to thrive in an area left largely undisturbed by human activity, and future generations will be thankful for us having protected it. Thank you for taking the time to consider this petition.
