• LEAP GATE PETITION - KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE
Leap Gate runs through two densely-populated family estates, Castle Mead and Paxcroft Mead, which are served by two primary schools. Since the new stretch of Leap Gate opened in June, HGVs, cars and motor bikes constantly exceed speed limits, putting the lives of residents and their children in danger. Motorists also regularly run the red lights at the Castle Mead pedestrian crossing, endangering the lives of those using it, most vulnerable of whom are children going to and from school during term time. Residents who walk their dogs along Leap Gate are also at risk as they are forced to cross the road in the 50mph zone to gain access to the open space as there is no footpath on the other side of the road. Residents' sleep is being disturbed by noise from the constant flow of traffic through the heart of the estate. Wiltshire Council has failed to adhere to their own Land at East Trowbridge Development Brief which says that potential traffic noise from the link road, Leap Gate, should be mitigated and is to have as little impact as possible on the residents of Castle Mead. Wiltshire Council has repeatedly been asked to extend the 30mph zone on Leap Gate in line with existing housing and to lower the speed limit on the remaining stretch to 40mph to discourage motorists speeding through the whole estate, but they refuse to listen to residents' concerns. Please consider signing our petition!

  • Fund the Rio Paralympics
The last two Olympic rounds - China and the UK - saw enormous strides for differently-abled athletes, and those who admire them and draw strength from their example. When Brazil was awarded the Games, its economy was booming - now it's not. So far, Olympic athletes have not noticeably suffered from this downturn; why should Paralympic athletes suffer? Surely the International Olympic Committee can stump up the money to make the Paralympics the success they should be, rather than a shadow of Rio's 2016 Olympics?

  • Refugees Welcome in Godalming!
David Cameron announced we’ll welcome 20,000 more Syrian refugees. But there’s a catch. This will take 5 years, leaving thousands of refugees in limbo. It’s now up to us to show that in cities, towns and villages all across the country we’re ready to welcome people now. Aylan, the toddler who drowned fleeing Syria, was just three years old. His town was under attack by Isis. His five year old brother and his mum also died trying to reach safety. We don't want Britain to be the kind of country that turns its back as people drown in their desperation to flee places like Syria. So let's stand up for Britain's long tradition of helping refugees fleeing war. Let's show the Prime Minister that we, the people of the UK, are proud to do our part and provide refuge to people in their hour of need. Please sign and share, or start your own petition for your town or city here: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/efforts/refugees-welcome

  • A Bowie museum in London
David Bowie had immeasurable creative influence and cultural impact. He was an outstanding artist, writer, composer, musician, actor, mime artist, with a unique artistic process which should be available to the public so he can continue to inspire generations to come. There is a great deal to be learned from him. As a great British icon we should acknowledge this by ensuring the public both nationally and globally can see and learn about his vast contribution to the artistic and creative world. Indeed, David Bowie was one of the most fascinating, talented individuals of this century, and possibly beyond.

  • Save The Railings Around The Bowie (Lazarus) Bandstand in Beckenham
Why is this important? It's important as the railing have protected the bandstand up to now- they were also in place when David Bowie co-organised and performed at a festival there. It is through the bandstand's link to David Bowie that money is being raised to restore it. The railings have been the protective arms around The Bowie/Lazarus Bandstand even to this day and long may this continue. I've organised two festivals there (13th of August 2016 as well as august 12th 2017) to raise funds to restore the bandstand as well as place a plaque there for David Bowie and everyone involved in the 1969 festival. They played an important role and with your help the bandstand's long history will continue. Help us keep the railings in place. Please sign and share this petition. If anyone can help do this it's the David Bowie fans! These railing were surrounding the bandstand when Bowie co-organised the 1969 festival and should remain there helping to protect it as it has been for many, many years, bandstands are disappearing around the country as are the railings around them, so let's keep this one as unique as the person it's now named after, there was only one David Bowie and there's only one Bowie Bandstand! Please note this is not an attack on the council on any other parties involved. It's about keeping history in a time when so much of it is becoming lost or damaged.

  • Scrap or reform Universal Credit.
If people are entitled by law to monetary support when they need it due to any reason, they should get it quickly and at the correct amount. This helps people get back on their feet as quickly as possible, keep out of debt and begin to contribute again to society as a whole. I volunteer in a food bank and see so many desperate and embarrassed people who have no money to buy their own food and often the reason is a mix up or delay in their Universal Credit payments.

  • Build an accessible park in Limavady
Despite catering for special needs education here in Limavady at Rossmar, and a great greenspace area at Backburn Path, we have no accessible play facilities for children in wheelchairs or specially adapted pushchairs. We also have no sensory areas, with parents having to travel out of the area to take their children to facilities adapted to their needs. Taking into account the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly article 2 (Children must be protected from discrimination), article 27 The child's right to a standard of living adequate for the child's physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development), and most relevent in this case, article 31 (The child's right to rest, leisure and recreational activities), our councillors are failing the families of Limavady and it's surrounding areas. Money was allocated to change the name of the current culture centre which was then dismissed. This could be spent in the construction of a sensory/accessible park. Our children are our future. Please sign this petition to show the demand we have for it in Limavady!

  • Stop prescription charges for the mentally ill
As somebody who has a mental illness I find it difficult to find justification for charging the mentally ill who work for their necessary medication. When I a capable of work I have to pay £15 every month for my prescription medication. If I was terminally ill my prescription would be free but mental illness is a lifetime disease too - why are we any different? Please sign and show your support for people like me when are being penalised for being different.

  • NO CUTS at Homerton hospital
The company that runs the cleaning, catering, security services at Homeron Hospital announced in July that they plan to cut hours and posts for some staff. Initially we were told this could mean up to 89 redundancies but ISS have since stated that the number will be much less than this. Nevertheless, it is clear that ISS are looking to reduce hours and some positions. Our first concern is about patient safety. Where staff are already stretched trying to complete the work they need to do, we believe that the impact of staff working shorter hours or having fewer staff working in the hospital will be that the vital work that our cleaners, caterers and security staff do cannot be completed effectively. We are also concerned about the impact on staff. ISS staff have told us that they are worried about what cuts in pay will do to themselves and their families. This is a very low paid group of workers. They are also concerned about the impact on the health of staff left covering increased workloads. But above all, ISS staff have pointed out that their role is about saving lives. They get job satisfaction from working for patients and are very committed to the Homerton Hospital and are therefore extremely concerned about what this will do to the service they can provide. Protect our patients, protect our NHS, no reduction in hours or posts. The current threat to hours and posts and the lack of information provided to staff does little to support either promise. Patient care should be our priority and staff are willing to discuss how workloads are organised. But cuts in hours overall and loss of posts will not support better patient care.

  • Stop job cuts at Health Education England
Health Education England (HEE) is currently consulting on proposals which will see massive job losses among staff responsible for the recruitment and training of new doctors and dentists for London and the South East, while at the same time introducing new data systems and ways of working without trialling them first. Currently 180 staff oversee the recruitment and training of thousands of junior doctors and dentists every year. Under the new plans, there will be just 111 staff to do the same work AND take on new business in two areas they have no experience of. This is a 41% head count cut coming at the same time as a massively increased workload, proposed to be implemented by March 2017. Furthermore, this is just the start – this cut is just in one region, but similar cuts are currently being planned in other HEE regions of the country. We believe this represents a denigration of the service for trainee doctors and dentists, and as a consequence a real threat to the NHS and to patient safety. At a time when recruitment of doctors is already suffering due to the government’s health policies, the last thing we need is to undermine it further. These cuts should be stopped completely until the new systems and working patterns have been tested so that informed proposals for safe staffing levels can be made. According to Professor Allyson Pollock: ‘The Health and Social Care Act abolished the NHS and it is now being dismantled through budget cuts and services closures. There is no longer a duty on the Sec of State to provide key services throughout England and many areas will soon find they have decreased and limited access to NHS services and care as hospitals and services close and are sold off. Budgetary cuts are also decimating the organisations such as HEE which is responsible for recruiting and training staff including junior doctors. The destruction of the NHS is continuing apace and only legislation can stop it’.
