  • Virgin Active Clapham closes the creche
Virgin has taken the decision to close the crèche. It is hugely disappointing and very very sad to see this happen, especially given their reason for this is to use it as an additional PT gym, which they will make much more money through than the crèche. The decision completely disregards any community and family values but is solely focussed on more profit for Virgin. Not only is this a very poor decision, but also has it been extremely poorly communicated without even asking any members using the crèche what their views are, how much they use/value the crèche, would they pay more for it and would there be any alternatives. They simply made the decision on money terms only, and clearly communicated when asked that losing all members using the crèche wouldn’t matter as they would still make more money through the new PT studio – very very single minded, short sighted and ridiculously selfish. The crèche is an amazing benefit we hugely value, the creche team is simply fantastic, loving and caring, super reliable and just simply irreplaceable. My son now 2.5 yrs has been here since 3months old and has made many friends amongst the many fun kids who come here; he loves being here so much that I have to drag him to leave and gives hugs and kisses to all the crèche ladies who he has come to love so much over the years, it is part of his home and family, his community! I am hoping many of you feel the same way, and this is not just about me and my son but even more so about the fantastic crèche team for whom this is not just a job, but a vocation with the kids having grown so close to their hearts. I am deeply disappointed, sad and angry and just feel we cant just stay quiet about this. I am sure some of you like me have spoken to the manager, but clearly together we are stronger. I have posted my anger on twitter @virginactiveuk and on SW11 mums on Facebook, pls join in making this known on any social media you can think of or anywhere else where this can make an impact. If you feel in the same way, then please sign this petition and tell anyone else who may do the same,

  • No to Edinburgh Rugby at Myreside
This development of the stadium will fundamentally change the nature of our quiet residential area. Thousands of people will regularly be travelling to and parking in the area - Myreside, Merchiston, Craiglockhart, Shandon/Harrison Park and Morningside/Craighouse. These plans will result in: Very large volumes of traffic being brought into the surrounding area, with road safety being a concern. There is already heavy congestion in the vicinity during peak times and these plans will significantly increase problems on roads leading into and out of the area Parking in residential areas and private developments – Edinburgh Rugby estimates what we believe is a conservative 500 cars per match for the trial period. We believe the limited public transport in the area will result in many 100s of cars, minibuses and buses parking in surrounding areas - and those without resident parking permit restrictions will be most affected - as supporters follow their teams for across UK and Europe. Visual and environmental impact of a large stadium complex being built. Noise and litter problems, temporary food stalls and bars, anti-social behaviour.

  • Protect The Arts in The Arches
The railway arches on John Street have housed independent arts based businesses for nearly 30 years. It has been a vibrant cultural space for the nurturing of grassroots talent in music, dance, theatre and various other arts. There are few other spaces in the city centre that have this kind of thriving arts community. Currently the arches are home to 3 independent businesses, The Cardiff Arches, Jukebox Collective and Only Drums Aloud. All 3 have been based at the arches for over 10 years. The Cardiff Arches rehearsal and recording studios provide a vital city centre resource for all Cardiff based musicians including young musicians who don’t have the transport or budget to travel to out-of-town studios. Jukebox Collective is a leading company for street dance education and performance in the UK and was recently awarded National Portfolio Organisation Status by Arts Council Wales. Only Drums Aloud has been providing award winning drum tuition to children and adults of all abilities for over 12 years at the arches, and as well as a samba band and group tuition it also double as a rehearsal space. A recent planning application for office blocks the land adjoining the railway arches is threatening their continued use as music and dance studios by restricting the access and parking that are currently available to users of the arches. We believe that some minor changes to the proposal will allow the redevelopment to go ahead whilst retaining access and parking for all 6 studios on the row therefore allowing the arts in the area to continue to flourish.

  • Everyone 4 Squash
Dear Squash Fan! We hope you can take a moment to sign our online 'e-petition' to help our squash courts in Scarborough. Four years ago we registered our interest to become part of the new Scarborough Leisure Village which is due to be completed in May 2017. The Council pledged to replace the existing facilities and 3 new glass back squash courts were centrally located in the plans. Today we face the threat of having no courts as the potential leisure service operators want a larger gym. So at this 11th hour the Council are wanting to change the original plans and completely remove the squash courts. This would leave us with no courts in the town centre and far too many gyms. Therefore we are starting this 'Everyone 4 Squash' campaign to secure the presence and long term success of squash in Scarborough fo our current players and generations to come. We would be grateful if you could show your support and by signing our petition and spreading the word to all fans of squash and other competitive sports. Many thanks for your support, 'Everyone 4 Squash' Scarborough Squash Players

  • Crohns disease legislation
If you are a Crohns disease sufferer: and feel we are being unnecessary discriminated against, by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and cancer patients please sign this petition. The N.I.C.E.'s decades old legislation, to prevent Crohns disease sufferers being awarded and treated with the Crohns disease cure. Instead the Crohns cure was awarded to bowel cancer patients and other types of cancer. This has proven partially effective; if bowel cancer is detected earlier enough. Meanwhile millions of Crohns sufferers are denied their cure. Surely it is time for Crohns disease patients to be included in their own cure. We are paying taxes too and deserve to have our cure available to us in the U.K. The Crohns disease cure should be available on the NHS as well as private practices. Unless we sort out the illegalities of the legislation discriminating against Crohns disease sufferers: these malpractices will not only be continued to use against Crohns disease sufferers, but could also be used to discriminate against other types of minority medical complaints and their sufferers. It may even effect our right to treatment here in the UK (public/private practices); if researchers in other countries come up with other forms of a Crohns cure. We must change this inequality against Crohns disease sufferers here in the UK.

  • Milford Haven and Surrounding Areas Urgently Need Continuous Air Pollution Monitoring
Milford Haven and adjacent towns to the growing industrial petrochemical and power industries are not monitored independently by Pembrokeshire County Council. We need constant air pollution monitoring, due to the possibility of daily pollution from the nearby industrial complexes. which could be a direct threat to our health and well being, especially the young and old. Any possible pollution is supposed to be carried away by the use of tall chimneys/stacks, but on days of still weather conditions, any pollutants can fall within a one and a half mile footprint, which could potentially cause massive health issues such as Asthma, Cancer and many other life threatening conditions to inhabitants living in Pembrokeshire. Air pollution monitoring would be the first step in helping us in detecting and taking any necessary preventative measures against these health threats. Please sign our petition, thank you. Peter Warrender, Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth.

  • No moor management for grouse-shooting on two National Trust estates in Derbyshire
The National Trust owns 8,000 hectares of moorland around Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and Ladybower Reservoir in the Derbyshire Peak District. It’s a honey pot for tourists, walkers and runners who love these open landscapes. You might think they are all wild, healthy habitats, rich in wildlife and untouched by human hand. The reality couldn’t be further from this (at least, not on those moors that are managed for grouse-shooting). There it can be more like a wildlife war-zone, where only the grouse are allowed to live in peace. Despite being part of the Dark Peak ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’, crimes against protected wildlife still occur on these remote uplands, but can rarely be proven. Nothing is allowed to exist on these moors if it conflicts with profitable grouse-shooting. This includes birds of prey like the Peregrine Falcon, Goshawk and Hen Harrier, as well as the Mountain Hare. All on National Trust land too! Concern over the ways these moors are intensively managed by grouse-shooting tenants for profit has been growing for some time. The RSPB have twice produced publications entitled “Peak Malpractice” to highlight these illegal activities. Early in 2016 a man was secretly filmed with a gun and a decoy Hen Harrier on these National Trust moors. Now, the Trust has had enough. In June it served notice on its shooting tenant to vacate the land. It said it no longer had confidence he was committed to the delivery of their vision for the land. We totally agree, and we fully support the National Trust's stance. Shooting rights on these National Trust moorland estates were let out to a single, commercial tenant. Whilst this undoubtedly brings in extra income, it does nothing to enhance the Trust’s reputation, nor the richness of the landscapes around the Kinder Scout plateau, Bleaklow or the Upper Derwent above Ladybower. Management for grouse-shooting will always conflict with the Trust's own vision for restoring the High Peak, and will encourage crimes against wildlife to continue. This petition is promoted by a coalition of over a dozen local outdoor and environmental groups who care about the moorlands in Derbyshire and the Peak District (e.g. Derbyshire Ornithological Society, Dark Peak Fell Runners, Derbyshire Mammal Group and Buxton Ramblers). So we call on the National Trust to go further. . . we want it to seize this opportunity and make the moorland estates of Hope Woodlands and Park Hall completely shooting-free. Permanently. We ask the National Trust not to appoint another shooting tenant here at all. Instead let wildlife and vegetation recover and thrive naturally. More information and an up-to-date list of 'sponsors' of this petition can be found at www.nomoorshooting.blogspot.co.uk (Note: It has also been produced in a paper-format for local people in Derbyshire to sign directly. So, if you intend to sign the printed version, it wouldn't be fair to sign this online version as well.)

  • Reinstate Student Maintenance Grants for those earning less than £25k
From Monday 1 August this year, students starting university courses in England will no longer be able to apply for grants towards living costs. Grants for students from low-income homes will now be replaced by loans. Previously, students from families with annual incomes of £25,000 or less received a full grant of £3,387 a year. The National Union of Students have said the move was "disgraceful" and meant poorer students would be saddled with a lifetime of debt. The switch from grants to maintenance loans was announced in July 2015 by the then Chancellor, George Osborne, in his Budget. Mr Osborne said at the time that there was a "basic unfairness in asking taxpayers to fund grants for people who are likely to earn a lot more than them". But is it fair that the very MPs who belong to a generation whose further education was largely funded by the tax payer are now denying the same opportunities to learn to the poorest in our society? Isn't it true that we as a society benefit when those people whose studies we've helped to fund go on to bring us innovations as scientists, better health care as doctors, consultants and surgeons, or improvements to industry and infrastructure as engineers for example? To say that we can't afford this investment is ridiculous. If we can afford to invest in a weapon system we've said we'll never realistically use then surely we can afford to invest in our future generations? So please sign to urge the government to think again and return maintenance grants to those who simply can't afford to study without them.

  • Stop Sussex Police from hooding children
In February and March 2012 my 11 year old daughter, Sophie, was put in a ‘spit hood’ by Sussex Police officers on at least three occasions. Sophie has a rare neurological disability, similar to autism, that can cause her to act in ways that people find challenging. She can become very upset when she is over-stimulated and can sometimes spit out of frustration. I had never heard of a ‘spit hood’ until one was used on my daughter. It is a material bag that goes over someone’s head with a drawstring to tighten it. Sussex Police allows its officers to put spit hoods on anyone who is spitting, regardless of whether they are a hardened adult criminal or a terrified 11 year old disabled girl who isn’t in control of her actions. I cannot describe how traumatic it was for Sophie to be hooded by police officers. Due to her disability she finds it very upsetting to have someone even touch her head. Having strangers put a bag over her head when she was already extremely distressed was profoundly shocking for her and she still hasn’t fully recovered from the experience over four years later. In June 2016 the Independent Police Complaints Commission published its report into Sophie’s treatment by the police. It found that 11 police officers and one member of police staff had cases to answer for misconduct. However, the IPCC wasn’t able to criticise the repeated use of the spit hoods as this was authorised by Sussex Police policy. Obviously it is not a pleasant experience to be spat at; however, the risk to police officers needs to be balanced against the very real psychological and physical risks to children who are subjected to this shocking treatment. Several of the largest policy forces around the country, including West Midlands Police and Merseyside Police, do not authorise the use of spit hoods on anyone let alone on children. In 2009 a man died after he was placed in a spit hood and became unwell in a Peterborough police station. In the wake of national media coverage about Sophie’s case (http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/08/ipcc-criticises-sussex-police-treatment-11-year-old-disabled-girl) Sussex Police confirmed that it would not stop its officers from hooding children. I think this is wrong. The police do an important and difficult job, but I don’t think they should be allowed to treat children in an inhuman, degrading and dangerous way. If you agree with me please sign this petition and call on Sussex Police to stop using spit hoods on children. Thank you. Note: names have been changed for legal reasons.
