• Love Activists Solution Based Proposals to End Homelessness.
The proposals were developed in consultation with the local community, prioritising feedback from rough sleepers at the group's weekly Love Kitchen. Love Activists hope to gather 1250 signatures to force the council to debate the proposals at a full council meeting. Reasoning/Rationale: 1. In May, the Supreme Court ruled that when local authorities make vulnerability assessments, a 'homeless person' should be compared with an 'ordinary person who is at risk of becoming homeless'. There is no doubt that any homeless person is 'significantly more vulnerable' than an ordinary person, therefore everybody living on the street should be assessed as being in priority need. The judgement also made it clear that while councils are often under huge financial strain, this must not be used as an excuse for avoiding their legal duties. To guarantee duty of care and legal obligations are met, all local authorities must provide permanent housing for anybody living on the streets. 2. Housing first pilot project had a 70% success rate in Brighton & Hove - helping 7 out of 10 people with high support needs into accommodation. 3. Extended winter provision: additional services provided over a period of time e.g. every night from November to March. If the material resources exist to provide shelter from a severe weather emergency, economic arguments against keeping the shelters open are not as powerful as the humanitarian ones for opening them. (Copy & pasted from 'Homeless Link') Humanitarian Response: SWEP should be applied responsibly to prevent death at all times; 3 consecutive nights at zero or below is the minimum requirement. Local authorities should consider factors such as wet weather and wind chill, snow coverage and duration of extreme weather when looking at provision. Preventing deaths on the streets is the aim of the protocol, so if this demands more beds and a longer response the local authority should do everything it can to prevent harm to individuals. Economics cannot change the weather any more than economics can determine people's relative vulnerability to each other. 4. It doesn't have to be severely wet to have a severe impact if you're sleeping on the streets. Severely windy, wet weather is an emergency, as is extremely hot, dry weather. Homeless Link offers advice and guidance to BHT, St Mungo's and Brighton & Hove City Council. Currently their minimum definition of severe weather is when the temperature drops below zero for three consecutive nights. (Copy & pasted from 'Homeless Link') There is no strict definition of what counts as ‘severe weather’. Local authorities should proactively identify any weather that could increase the risk of serious harm to people sleeping rough and put measures in place to minimise this. This includes extreme cold, wind and rain. It is important not to presume when, or in what form, severe weather will occur. Sleeping rough is never comfortable, but the suffering is exacerbated by all elements It doesn't have to be severely wet to have a severe impact if you're sleeping on the streets. ('Homeless Link') http://www.homeless.org.uk/sites/default/files/site-attachments/Winter%20provision%20guidance%202015-16.pdf 5. If this doesn't happen there will be no truly affordable places to live and more people will inevitably become homeless. 6. This would make use of empty properties, keep people safe and avoid waste of tax payers money, private money and time spent on security, policing and court costs. (Copy & pasted from 'Homeless Link') In addition to the direct risk associated with severe weather, local authorities should work alongside other local statutory and voluntary services to identify and mitigate actions taken during severe weather that can increase risk for those sleeping rough. For example, people may choose to sleep in riskier places, such as in bins, where they can find cover. They may also enter buildings or property illegally, or increase their substance use as a coping mechanism. 7. No single authority can successfully move to implement all of these measures, because if they 'move first', their service capacity would risk being overwhelmed by people migrating to that local authority. Therefore, we must work towards implementing these measures nationally. [email protected] twitter.com/loveactivists_ facebook.com/loveactivistsbrighton

  • Krusher Joule
Krusher Joule the living legend first came to the public's attention in 1982 when he became Art Director of the then Bible of Heavy Metal magazine Kerrang!.  Before that he was known as Steve Joule who had worked as a freelance designer in the music industry since 1976 producing work for the likes of Motorhead, Sammy Hagar, Uriah Heep, Gamma, Girlschool, Blondie and The Sex Pistols.  He has designed album sleeves for Hawkwind 'Live ’79', Gary Moore 'Dirty Fingers' and 'Live at the Marquee', Iron Maiden 'Live After Death', Ozzy Osbourne 'Diary of a Madman', 'Speak of the Devil' and 'Bark at the Moon', Japan and Black Sabbath 'Born Again' which apparently Ian Gillan, the then vocalist with the band was quoted as saying; “I took one look at the cover and puked!”, whilst both Deicide’s Glenn Benton and Soulfly’s Max Cavalera have claimed it to be their favourite album sleeve of all time.  Also whilst still working for Kerrang! Krusher designed a series of official biography books including Iron Maiden’s 'Running Free', Motley Crue’s 'The First Five Years' and Twisted Sister’s 'The First Official Book' and not forgetting tour programmes for AC/DC, Deep Purple, Robert Plant, Anthrax, Accept and Europe.  His work has also included designing and editing the official Donington 'Monsters of Rock' programmes since 1986 and he has also compered and DJ’ed the festival in 1994, ’95 and ’96.  In 1989 Krusher was offered his own radio rock show, 'Krusher’s Metal Mayhem' by the BBC which he presented on Greater London Radio. He was also approached to host and DJ the rock night at the Hippodrome club in the heart of London’s West End.  It was a club night that would regularly see eighteen hundred people crowd into the venue where they would be treated to impromptu live performances by the likes of Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Motorhead who all frequented the club on a regular basis as did Metallica, Motley Crue and Iron Maiden or whichever rock band was passing through town that week. Unfortunately like all good things both the radio show and the club came to an end, but not before becoming landmarks in the history of London rock.  In 1992 Krusher became co-presenter along with his Jack Russell terrier Bullseye of 'Raw Power' the UK’s only terrestrial TV rock show and voted best TV show in the Kerrang! Readers poll in both 1992 and ’93.  In 1994 the show changed its name to 'Noisy Mothers' a name which Krusher hated, always believing it should have been called 'Watch with Motherf****r' but which again was voted best TV show by Kerrang! and Metal Hammer readers for the next two years. Sadly Christmas 1995 saw the last ever 'Noisy Mothers' broadcast, the powers that be in TV land deciding that rock was a dying industry and therefore warranted no place on our TV screens.

  • Save Ramsgate Sprint Revival
Ramsgate Sprint Revival in 2015 was a brilliant event generating huge interest locally in Thanet and beyond. This event brought over £350,000 to the Ramsgate area and many 10,000's of people from the locality, from around the UK and abroad. We, the people of Ramsgate and Thanet, ask that the Council permits this event to run, through joint discussions with the much smaller event which could be moved to either another date or to use one of the other parks such as Ellington Park or King George VIth Park.

  • Don't sell off Channel 4
A privatised Channel 4 wouldn't be the same. Its focus on innovation would disappear as shareholder profits become the only priority. It would cut its work with hundreds of independent producers. We don't need another Channel 5, ITV or Sky News. Some of us enjoy Channel 4 News with Jon Snow. Some of us enjoy Countdown. Some of us enjoy Made in Chelsea. All of us want Channel 4 to stay OURS. Channel 4 is like no other broadcaster. It's a national treasure with a duty to make innovative programmes and reflect the diversity of British society. Keep it that way. "The notion that a privatised Channel 4 would continue to invest significant sums in news and current affairs or make equity investments in British feature films, or try out more programme ideas each year than any other channel, is utterly illusory." David Puttnam, film producer “I can imagine getting a call in the middle of the night from a shareholder sharing their view about something we were going to air that was going to have a lot of impact...The nature of that coverage would subtly change over time. And the fierce independence of our journalism, I can’t help but think, would alter over time.” David Abrahams, Chief Executive of Channel 4 Read more about Channel 4 on the We Own It website http://weownit.org.uk/evidence/channel-4

  • The Sun should be accountable for promoting race hatred.
Because the Sun routinely headlines lies & mis-information that promotes race hatred & misunderstanding in the UK. The front page headline used on 23/11/2015 for instance may be mathematically correct but and its a big but, this depends what question was asked of the people they polled. The question is at best skewed. It's a general question and not specific. The question asked was "How do you feel about young Muslims who leave the UK to join fighters in Syria?" It didn't ask for instance which side these young people would be fighting on or if they would be jihadists. The Sun helpfully misguide their readers by adding a photograph of so called "Jihadi John". You can make your own complaint here too: https://www.ipso.co.uk/oxbxApps/app/complaint1.html

  • Support The Food Waste & Food Poverty Motion
It is estimated that supermarkets waste around 180,000 tonnes of food each year, with far higher waste in the supply chain caused by their unnecessary cosmetic standard policies, which contribute towards waste of around 3 million tonnes in the supply chain. In Norwich there are over 7,000 children living in poverty, with the effects of childhood malnutrition lasting a lifetime at a significant cost to the taxpayer, with increased spending on social services, criminal justice, healthcare and extra educational support arising from an upbringing below the breadline. The need to redistribute unsold food to those who can’t afford to feed themselves has become so urgent that a number of organisations have recently joined together to form Norwich Food Hub – which aims to collect food from supermarkets, bring it to a central city-centre location for sorting, and redistribute it to community groups helping those in food poverty. Since forming we’ve been in contact with over 15 organisations interested in receiving food, including 6 breakfast and after-school clubs for young children. By supplying to these groups alone we could be feeding over 250 people each day. Using food waste to feed the hungry is not a solution to food poverty. That should be addressed through fair and sustainable welfare policies. However whilst both food waste and food poverty co-exist we need to organise so that this food can be used to help people in need. Support from the Council would go a long way to achieving our aims and reducing food poverty in our city.

  • Protect sport: Widen the protected list
English/British sport is being destroyed by such as Sky. Witness the lack of home players in the Premier league. That has to be stopped. Kids are growing up with an attitude that Sport only matters for the money. It is far more important than that.

  • Save Dunstable Ashton Grammar School
The building, which started life in 1888 as Dunstable Grammar School, has a Grade II listing but such a listing does not guarantee the building’s safety. It’s not unknown for developers who buy such buildings to leave them to deteriorate over a number of years and then to apply to the relevant council to have the listing set aside because of the condition of the building! Demolition can follow. The Facebook groups 'Dunstable -- Preserving the Past for the Future' and 'Dunstable Ashton Grammar School Campaign' are keen to ensure that not only the exterior but also the interior, which contains many beautiful architectural features, is not lost. The school is owned by Ashton Schools Foundation, which has put the site up for sale for housing development. Some of the school annexe buildings will be lost but it would be criminal if the main building and its features were also lost, especially as so many iconic buildings in Dunstable have already been demolished, and particularly as the town desperately needs a museum to keep its heritage alive. Please help us to preserve the building that educated such wonderful stars as the Oscar-winning Gary Cooper, Sam Kydd and the silent-screen and veteran talkies actor John Stuart, as well as Khawaja Nazimuddin (Prime Minister of Pakistan), Mike Bannister (chief pilot of Concorde), Roger Parrott (who played Neville Chamberlain in the film The King’s Speech) and Kevin McCloud MBE (presenter of Channel 4’s Grand Designs), who is already taking an active interest in preserving the school.

  • Stand Up for Stirchley - Save Fitness First and PSL Bowling
On 22nd December 2016 Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee approved Lidl’s application to build a new supermarket on the Pershore Road site currently occupied by Fitness First Stirchley and PSL Bowling. Having previously rejected the application, the decision left the whole community, including its local councillors (across several political parties), shocked and disappointed. The community came together and petitioned against this decision, mounting a legal challenge with the Environmental Law Foundation. We were successful, and Birmingham City Council agreed to quash the application, admitting their errors. The latest news is that Lidl allegedly want to buy the land regardless. We are disgusted by this behaviour and petition Birmingham City Council to support us in saving our leisure facilities. We also petition Lidl to reconsider other vacant sites in Stirchley, of which there are plenty. We feel that this site is the wrong location for the Lidl store for the following reasons: Loss of PSL Bowling - a family run, independent business that supports local economy. Nearest alternative approximately 4 miles away Loss of Fitness First Stirchley – a popular fitness gym with over 3800 members amidst reports of a growing obesity crisis costing Birmingham over £2 billion every year Loss of jobs – 62+ people are set to lose their jobs across the 2 sites with Lidl only committing to 20 full time staff Further traffic disruption – concerns over increased volume of traffic on an already highly congested route and impact on residents parking Alternative Stirchley sites available – derelict site owned by Tesco and proposed new Aldi store on Magnet site Already enough supermarkets – 19 supermarkets in a 3 mile radius

  • Save the New White Bull in Nottingham from Demolition
The New White Bull is a community asset acknowledged by Broxtowe Borough Council in its decision to list the pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). A national brewer formerly owned the pub but refused to sell it to the local Blue Monkey brewery, which is based just around the corner and apparently would dearly love to use the New White Bull as its brewery tap. The site was initially sold to become a supermarket and is now earmarked for demolition for housing. But it could still be a viable and thriving community pub. The New White Bull has been a public house since at least 1876 (Post Office Directory) and so has given some 140 years of service to the local community. With your help, it could give another 140 years as a public house. Please sign this petition to protect the New White Bull.
