The amount of homeless people on Newcastle's streets has risen visibly and dramatically, particularly in the last year. When temperatures in the city inevitably reach freezing this winter, I want to be able to offer them a shelter in unused and empty buildings. Please do your bit now and sign this petition.

Coventry has one of the highest rates of homelessness in the country, more than the national average. Despite this, we have the space that could house every homeless person in Coventry but bureaucracy stops the council doing just this!! It's inexcusable when we have so many empty buildings. Coventry City Council - please open your empty buildings to the homeless in winter. Just a few years ago, there were fewer than 10 rough sleepers in Coventry on an average per night. If someone lives and works in the city, there's a good chance that they will see that many just on the way home now. Coventry City Council, you need to address the root causes of homelessness, however in the meantime, let's give rough sleepers some shelter at least over the frigid winter months.

As a peninsular, whose nearest dedicated cycling track is an hours drive away, we need such a facility to encourage cycling as part of a healthy and environmentally friendly community. We will be able to provide a facility for casual cyclists and training and racing for the more serious cyclist.

We finally have the Firstsite we dreamed of, a jewel in our midst, a beating heart of creativity in Colchester. The Board of Trustees at Firstsite are largely an outsider group who are not in tune with the current feeling and support for the huge achievements of both Anthony Roberts and the staff in creating a jewel in Colchester's creative community. They are dismissive of the community in Colchester and are about to destroy all that has been created by Anthony and his team. Please don't let this happen.

If the Northamptonshire Police Force Control Centre (FCC) which handles 999 and 101 calls as well as police radio transmissions is relocated from the Wootton Hall Police HQ in Northampton into another County, with it will disappear all of the local knowledge, experience and expertise that currently benefits both Police Officers and members of the public here in Northamptonshire. The local police union, Unison, believe that this essential part of front line policing should NOT be moved to a location remote from its parent Force, or put into the hands of the notorious G4S or any other private company who will run it as a business rather than for the benefit of the people of Northamptonshire. The staff of the FCC are rightly proud of the professional service they continue to provide, and it is to their great credit that they put their concerns for the safety and wellbeing of the vulnerable and distressed members of the public who will be affected by these changes before their own worries about job security and terms and conditions of service.

In the winter of 2015/16, Glasgow City Mission recorded that they were full to capacity on 32 occasions- a situation that has previously never happened. Clearly there is a growing and worrying trend of street homelessness in Glasgow.

More and more people are becoming homeless everyday, particularly in the climate of austerity and we are all susceptible to the adverse effects of harsh winter weather. With babies and children dying in cars when sleeping rough with their parents and number of people, even with houses, dying due to the bitter cold it is of vital importance that people are protected this winter. Furthermore, preventative action to reduce health problems as a result of cold weather could save the NHS money as they would not have to treat illnesses due to harsh weather. It is therefore simply logical to open up empty buildings this winter to provide shelter for those who are in need. Our library is more than just a place to get books - it provides a real focus for the community with shared interest groups, computer access, skills sharing across all ages - the list is endless and growing all the time. Most importantly it is a place for people to meet and be with others.

To plead to Bradford Council to open its empty buildings to the homeless in winter. I have slept on the streets myself, in order to raise money to help local churches to do this. While they provide a fantastic service, they only help a fraction of our homeless - there just isn't the room. I cannot imagine sleeping rough in driving, biting winds, snow, ice and winter rain. There are many empty buildings that can be offered, purely for winter shelter. Maybe these places can also then be used to facilitate targeted help to those in need of it - for support, help with housing, health care, advice and general care. Charities' resources could be used for support rather than spending their resources on providing the actual shelters. This is a necessary resource and if we pull together en masse we have more than a great chance of being an influence.
