Pay Camp Beaumont Staff A Living WageGroup Leaders at Camp Beaumont are responsible for taking care of our children - an immensely important job. However, despite the fact Camp Beaumont is a London company and their camps are all based in and around London, people working there are currently paid Minimum Wage instead of London Living Wage. Camp Beaumont charges parents £45 a day, much more than other summer camps. So why is it that an 18-year-old taking care of 12 children will only be paid £5.60 an hour, barely enough to cover travel costs? (A single journey on the Tube costs £2.20 in London.) That's under 50p an hour for each child. However, each child's parents are paying £5.62 an hour for this childcare - where is the extra £61.82 per hour going? If Camp Beaumont wishes to recruit and retain high-quality staff to look after our children, they need to start paying their workers above minimum wage. Stop Job Centre ClosuresThe DWP is planning to close 20 more job centres to try to reduce costs. This will create more problems for jobseekers, who are likely to be short of funds. If they can afford the fare, they will most likely to depend on public transport, which seems to be becoming less reliable. Surely then they will be more likely to be sanctioned, only increasing their difficulties. This government is supposed to be helping job seekers into jobs. Save Movie House Dublin Road!The Belfast Telegraph recently published an article outlining plans to demolish the Movie House on Dublin Road. "Plans are now under way to knock down the Movie House cinema on Dublin Road and build a £65m 12-storey office scheme with a capacity for 3,000 staff." Losing it would be yet another nail in the coffin for the arts in Belfast for the sake of the commercial and financial gain of the minority. Any proposal to demolish this wonderful cinema would be yet another example of the rampant 'beigification' of Belfast. Those of us who want to save the Movie House from such shameful fate need to fight for it right now. A petition signed by 1000s of people whilst an open consultation process is ongoing may just make developers think twice about demolishing our cinema. We need the power of signatures to help us convince developers that the cinema is worth keeping and important to many people. Intelligent Office: Stop Enforcing Sexist Dress CodesThis is important because it is an outdated and ignorant approach to modern day work life. I left my role within a very large law firm as I was unable to continue working for a company who said that I cannot be taken seriously and would never have a successful career if I did not wear makeup or wear a specific nail colour. This archaic approach made me feel very uncomfortable and disheartened that as a woman, my looks were considered far more important and influential than my abilities to fulfill a role. Dress length, make-up, nail colours, heels are all things that don't define your ability to do a job, so they should not be made part of a company policy. Declare NMC action unlawful and replace with an organisation fit for purpose.Midwifery is a separate role from nursing. Both professions are unique in every way, from character of the role, all the way back to preregistration study. Midwives have a completely different way of working and totally different responsibilities. This has meant that an individual arrangement has always been necessary to ensure public safety, public health, support of women's choice and, of course, promoting the health of generations to come. The NMC have, in one fell swoop, and ignoring the results of their own consultation, removed supervision, removed the need for a midwifery committee and declared that independent midwives have inadequate insurance to provide intrapartum (birth) care for their clients. If an independent midwife has provided antenatal care, she may not now provide intrapartum care. If she attends the birth, the NMC have stated she will be struck off the register. This action has resulted in many women suddenly being faced with the loss of the intimate and trusting relationship they have developed with their midwife. There is unlimited research proving that this model of care is the gold standard. The long term implications for the mental and emotional health of all those affected will be enormous. Any stress during pregnancy has the potential to affect fetal neurological development and maternal attachment and bonding. Far from protecting the public, this decision is creating serious emotional and financial harm to women (including midwives) and their families. In summary, the ultimate outcome of this action will lead to the downgrading of midwifery as a profession. This will result in a much higher level of maternal and infant death. Develop the Brownfield sites in WorthingNot only will this ease the housing burden on our town with the potential for several hundred new homes it will improve the general outlook of the town to visitors and tourists. Teville gate has sat in ruins for 20 years and is in dire need of investment. The aquarena site is again another key gateway to the town and new housing will improve this area. Union place could become a new key entertainment hub with cinema complex, eateries and some housing. Not only will this create jobs but will also help those who own business in the town centre with the extra influx of potential customers and newer, improved retailers. We have already seen the potential new brands coming into the Montague Centre and want to continue to see an influx of brand names. These names will hopefully help our locals to choose to shop local as opposed to spending in Chichester, Horsham, Brighton and other towns.This will allow us to employ more people and continue to support the local economy.
