• Spend Defence budgets on Defence
If the Paris attacks had been carried out by ETA (Basque Separatists) there would be no call to bomb Spain. Involvement in Syria and Iraq results in killing innocents. Their family and friends then become OUR enemies where they were previously for the West. Nuclear weapons are no deterrent as an attack may come from any country and it may not be that country responsible. The £millions spent on offensive weapons could instead strengthen border checks which would save us money by cutting smuggling. Drones are becoming more accurate and cheap. Drones which can kill a terrorist leader can be used to kill any leader. Governments should be investing in defensive measures for themselves and the rest of us. Bombing thousands or even millions is not a proportionate response. We do not kill members of organizations to which murderers belong, nor do we kill their family and friends. Someone in IS in Syria or Iraq MAY have planned the Paris attacks but if we don't know exactly who then why are we killing people there? Spend the so-called Defence Budget on real Intelligence and policing instead and make us all safer, not less safe.

  • Save Cambridgeshire Lollipop ladies and men
These are two of the main commuter routes in and out of the city and as council members will be aware they are extremely busy and dangerous at peak times. These are also the times when children are traveling to and from our local primary schools and to expect our children to cross either of these main roads unassisted would pose an unacceptable danger to such young people. The parents and residents of Abbey Ward understand that unprecedented financial pressures are faced by our local government, particularly in light of even greater cuts in the chancellor’s autumn statement. But by removing this vital public service the council will open themselves up to even greater financial risk if and when these obvious dangers result in injury or worse. We do not believe it necessary to wait for this awful outcome and call on the council to do the right thing for the sake of our children. The parents and residents of Abbey Ward, together with Abbey People, invite the County Council to enter into dialogue with Abbey People in order to discuss realistic alternatives and funding opportunities in order to keep this necessary service for the community. https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/-/lollipopladycby.jpeg

  • Save Ramsgate Sprint Revival
Ramsgate Sprint Revival in 2015 was a brilliant event generating huge interest locally in Thanet and beyond. This event brought over £350,000 to the Ramsgate area and many 10,000's of people from the locality, from around the UK and abroad. We, the people of Ramsgate and Thanet, ask that the Council permits this event to run, through joint discussions with the much smaller event which could be moved to either another date or to use one of the other parks such as Ellington Park or King George VIth Park.

  • Call on Labour MPs to support Jeremy Corbyn on Syria
The recent Labour Party conference agreed four conditions that would have to be satisfied before military action could be supported. None of these have been satisfied: 1. Clear and unambiguous authorisation from the United Nations. As reported by the BBC, UN Security Council resolution 2249 carried last week does not provide a legal basis for military action by the UK and does not invoke Chapter VII of the UN charter authorising the use of force. 2. A comprehensive EU-wide plan to provide humanitarian assistance to the consequent increase in the number of refugees. In fact, the EU refugee plan is unravelling and the approach to refugees is highly fragmented. 3. That bombing is exclusively directed at military targets directly associated with 'ISIL'. There is evidence that around 90% of drone strike victims in other conflicts were unintended casualties. 4. That any military action is subordinated to international diplomatic efforts, including the main regional powers, to end the Syrian civil war. The shooting down of a Russian plane by Turkey in addition to differing approaches to the Assad regime and a continuing multifaceted conflict make a broadly-based, sovereign Syrian government that could retake territory currently controlled by ISIL a diminishing prospect. We would all like to see the defeat of IS. The future of the Assad government should be determined by the Syrian peoples alone and not by Western intervention. What is certain is that further bombing will increase the humanitarian crisis and cause civilian loss of life. Recent wars have created the sort of stateless societies in which terrorist groups like ISIL can thrive, as recently admitted by Tony Blair when he stated that the invasion of Iraq created the conditions for the rise of ISIL. Jeremy Corbyn was elected by 59.5% of voters. It's time to stand by the democratically expressed will of the party members.

  • Rebuild Irlam Skate Park
Child obesity in Irlam and Cadishead is on the rise so why get rid of something that could combat this? It's also a social place for most where friendships are formed and skills honed.

  • Stop Proposed Caravan Road Tax
Touring caravan users are already paying road tax on the vehicles used to tow the caravan. The caravan when connected becomes part of the towing unit, would this also mean all articulated vehicles would also be required to pay road tax on each trailer?

  • ASBLOW - Campaign to ban noisy, polluting leaf blowing machines.
Why leaf blowers should be banned. There are many reasons why leaf blowing machines should be banned. Noise Pollution: Leaf blowers can be as loud as 105dBs - any sound above 85dBs can permanently damage hearing. Noise at this level and even the constant whine in the background causes distress to people who are trying to work from home or trying to rest. Health Effects: Exposure to loud noise causes high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disturbances and poor mental health. Air Pollution: Gas leaf blowers create high levels of formaldehyde, benzine, fine particulate matter and smog forming chemicals which are known to cause dizziness, headaches, asthma attacks, heart and lung disease, cancer and dementia. Kills Insects and bugs: From a distance of 1ft, their 180-200mph jet stream maim or kill insects and small animals such as voles, hedgehogs, moles, dormice and grass snakes. Detrimental to Birds and Wildlife: Excessive noise also has a detrimental effect on birds and wildlife since it limits their ability to mate and find food. With the recent fuel crisis, it is unconscionable that fuel would be wasted on filling leaf blowers.

  • Introduce "Meat from Factory Farm" labelling
Given the choice between purchasing eggs from caged or free range hens, the British public have proven that they care enough about animal welfare to have this inform their purchasing decisions. Independent research has found that 79% of UK consumers take animal welfare into account when shopping, yet most of the method of production labelling in this country is still voluntary and insufficiently regulated and enforced. http://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/foodlabelling/works Requiring those manufacturers who source meat from intensive "factory" farms to declare this on their packaging by law would help consumers make an informed choice at the point of purchase, while encouraging people to think about where their food comes from and the quality of life the animals involved receive before they become our dinner. The research indicates that 8 out of 10 British shoppers would support this, and the "Labelling Matters" campaign offers a tool for lobbying DEFRA and the EU as individuals with regard to chicken meat: http://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/foodlabelling/takeaction http://www.onekind.org/campaigns/food_labelling/ It is our opinion that this does not go far enough; and we think that pigs, sheep, cows, and fish deserve the same consideration as chickens. In addition, the meat industry is a major contributor to climate change, and intensive farming methods exacerbate this. While it is unrealistic to expect people to stop eating meat all together, this move would give consumers an indication as to how much their purchasing choices contribute to this global crisis. http://www.cowspiracy.com/ http://www.fawf.org.uk/documents/FAWF_Labelling_Food_FINAL.pdf

  • Please, don't bomb Syria!
Thousands of innocent people will die and the refugee crisis will escalate, pushing us all towards a never-ending conflict. The vast amount of public money that this military action will cost could be well spent elsewhere. War only escalates more war, please listen to the voice of reason.

  • Stop VAT on sanitary products; don't just give the money to charity
While women may be happy for extra funding for such charities, this purely political gesture completely misses the point. These products are NOT luxuries so why are they taxed as such? What George Osborne did today was keep a discriminatory tax and make it an enforced charitable contribution which only women have to pay. This is important because the tax is discriminatory.
