The Chancellor’s claim that school budgets are protected is false. Schools are facing a real terms cut to their budgets of at least 3%. This is having a serious impact on schools, as they struggle to cover the costs for basic things they are expected to provide. The expenditure faced by schools is increasing year on year. Budgets are not keeping pace with increases to National Insurance contributions, pension contributions, pay increments for support staff and some teachers, rising costs of heating and maintaining premises, nor the enormous costs related to examinations. Schools are being forced to make redundancies and cut corners on important resources. Our children and school staff are already suffering as a direct result of these savage budget cuts. If we want to maintain an outstanding Education system, we must act now!

This October we urge women and men to join us in removing the pink ribbon blindfold and in asking Breast Cancer Charities to do the same. Why, despite all the money raised, are more and more of us are getting this disease? Is it possible that we’re not being given the full picture on the breast cancer epidemic that has taken us from 1 in 12 chance of a woman getting the disease in her lifetime in 1995 to a 1 in 8 chance today? Why are Breast Cancer Charities refusing to acknowledge the environmental and occupational risk factors for breast cancer, when the evidence is already out there? ALL women need and deserve a full understanding of ALL potential risk factors for the disease that threatens women’s lives and health. Now is the time to question why Breast Cancer Charities continue to focus solely on ‘lifestyle’ risk factors such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the potential 60% of breast cancer cases for which they have no explanation. What about the role of chemical, environmental and occupational exposures in this? Why, when the World Health Organisation states that prevention (which is not the same as early detection) offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer, do we not see this reflected in our cancer plans and strategies? Why is primary prevention (stopping the disease before it starts) not equally addressed along with better treatment and care? Why are those with the power to influence decisions on breast cancer policy not acting on what we already know? Join us this October in removing the pink ribbon blindfold and asking the Breast Cancer Charities the Big Question: WHY they persist in refusing to acknowledge the role of environmental and occupational toxins by ignoring decades of evidence up to the present day on the link between our lifelong (womb to grave) exposures to toxins and the escalating incidence of breast cancer? This event is one of the causes of the lack of regard for politics in general amongst the electorate as it is so clearly nothing more than a public schoolboys’ shouting match. Its purpose is supposed to be holding the government to account but it singularly fails to do this and nothing positive ever comes from it that could not be achieved through alternative means. All Labour MPs (except individual backbenchers with genuine constituency based questions) should refuse to attend this brouhaha - returning to the chamber for any item that involves a vote. This would be a powerful strategy to move towards the better/different/more grown-up politics that Jeremy Corbyn advocates.

It is essential that we get a proper definition of child poverty so that any government can make proper decisions about how the will address child poverty. The decision to exclude in-work households means that the review will remove those families whose parents are working on low incomes and struggling to pay their bill! This decision would mean a potentially huge chunk of potential vulnerable children will be excluded and probably not become entitled to any support that should be entitled to. The UK has a a lot of low income families. Is this the reason they are excluded? Support this campaign so that the commission can make a valued decision on how to properly address child poverty across the UK.

We have created this campaign in collaboration with Campaign Against the Arms Trade, Amnesty International (University of Liverpool group) and the Green Party. The United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) states that weapons should not be sold to countries if there is a potential that the arms or items could be used to facilitate a serious violation of human rights. Whilst Saudi Arabia has been deemed ‘’a very old ally and partner’’ by David Cameron (2012), it continues to abuse the human rights of its citizens based on their gender and sexuality and refuses to acknowledge a need for change. Our mutual economic relationship with this country makes us complicit in the systematic abuse that takes place. The UK should consider not only the articles in the ATT but a country’s approach to human rights as a whole. Saudi Arabia consistently commits egregious breaches of human rights. It outlaws freedom of speech, expression or belief outside of Wahhabi Islam and regularly imprisons opponents without trial. Homosexuality is branded a crime and is punishable by torture and execution. Saudi Arabia and the UK have long had close dealings in the arms trade. Saudi Arabia is Britain’s largest customer for weapons and the UK is the Gulf nation’s single biggest supplier, according to Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT). Weapons created in the UK were used to bomb Yemen this year in what has been dubbed ‘’a humanitarian catastrophe’’ (Andrew Smith, CAAT). Saudi Arabia is the biggest sponsor of global terrorism, funnelling money to rebels in Syria and to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide. The terrorist organisation IS are ‘’a product of Saudi ideals, Saudi money and Saudi organisational support’’ (Senator Bob Graham, the 9/11 commission). How can we claim to be a country that supports equality, diversity and freedom of speech when we continue with this inherently hypocritical trade relationship?
