• Stop The HGV Road Carnage
This situation cannot be left unchecked (The UK government has been successful in reducing the patrol of roads by local Police forces to almost nil and, as a driver that drives some 25-30,000 miles per year in the UK, can certainly vouch for the lack of Police patrols and, the increasing carnage caused by poor driving standards of HGV drivers. My particular collision was caused by a female HGV "Tramper" (trampers live in the HGV vehicle for many days and sometimes, weeks) who, at 60mph, drove into the side of my car causing us to be flipped 4 times across 3 lanes of the motorway then, taking out 60 metres of the central reservation steelwork. We were cut from our car after being treated for only minor injuries (Luckily) We then learnt that the HGV driver had initially tried to drive away from the crash site then, after being interviewed by Police, admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. She had been driving for some 34 hours and had tampered with the Tachograph display (the tachograph machine is a legal requirement in most HGV vehicles which monitors the driving habits of the current driver. There are imposed break periods and "Stop/Start" recordings within the mechanism. Unfortunately, many drivers (it would appear), have learnt how to override this mechanism and, hence, can drive much further and over longer periods of time). Having researched this situation with 3 Police forces in the UK, I have sourced that very few HGV drivers are ever tasked with proving their working patterns (indeed, some Police Officers are not trained in Tachograph use for HGV purposes). Further, and on the admission of several Police Officers, most foreign HGV drivers, when causing infringements to UK road law, are sent on their way without any charge, fine or loss of vehicle after causing mayhem with other road users. Several Police Officers being heard to say that "The paperwork is too time consuming and, the Courts will not allow us to bring these charges before them due to the fact that the drivers will be long gone into their home country before it has a chance of being heard in the Courts". This is unacceptable - the laws should be changed to allow the Police to operate as their counterparts in other countries. Other countries Police forces can, after such misdemeanours, confiscate vehicles, impose roadside fines, detain HGV drivers for court appearances next day and even, summon the employers of that particular HGV Driver to appear in court also. There is an increasing number of HGV road accidents whilst being driven by poorly trained and badly managed so-called Professional drivers. This needs to STOP.

  • UNFREEZE UK PENSIONS
Lots of pensioners are living abroad on very low incomes because their pensions have been frozen. My aunt aged 84 who qualifies for a British pension is in receipt of the pension she starting to get when she was 60. The amount she receives has remained the same - frozen at the 1990 rate just because she lives abroad. How can this be fair ?

  • Another white collar crime gets off with a slap on the wrist
It is time that one law for the rich and one law for the poor was ended. Those who claim to lead the country, should be beyond reproach. They receive high wages, and should be dismissed immediately if they are so morally inept, that they think it is OK to steal from the country. Greed and dishonesty are not characteristics suitable for anyone in public leadership. White collar crime continues to increase, with little to no consequences.

  • David Cameron - Introduce Firework Laws
Because currently there is no legislation around fireworks, displays, and setting up businesses, 7 people lost their lives in this dreadful tragedy on 4th November 2011, two of them were my parents. We believe that these 7 people should not have died in vain. We believe that the introduction of Laws to ensure that firework operators are suitably trained and licenced in both their field of work and their businesses would go some way to ensuring that this sort of tragedy never happens again. This is so important to us that we already have a petition on another site, but we need more people to back us, so we are now trying our luck on other sites as well.

  • Hands Off The Brighton Royal Pavilion
This is taken from an article in the Pensioner, which is a local Brighton and Hove magazine, specifically for older people, and was written by local activist Fancis Tonks. From time to time someone comes up with the idea to tear down the Royal Pavilion and build a hospital or build houses, yet the Pavilion, quirky and whimsical, made Brighton what it is today, originally a farmhouse the new Pavilion was designed by John Nash for the Prince Regent 200 years ago. Almost as if the Taj Mahal had been picked up and plonked down by the seaside, the Royal Pavilion is Indian outside and Chinese inside, it is a part of our history. The dining room has a massive dome complete with dragons and was lit with gas for banquets. The music room housed concerts as the Prince Regent had his own band of 70 musicians and on one occasion, welcomed Rossini. In the great War of 1914 to 1918 the pavilion was a hospital that housed Indian soldiers injured in the conflict that is all part of our heritage. It was bought by the city fathers from Queen Victoria for £50,000 in the middle of the 19th century and this makes it the only Royal Palace owned by the people through the local authority. I believe the Royal Pavilion estate as we know it is under threat. A Heritage Lottery Funding bid has gone in and the outcome is not known yet. There are some proposals that are disturbing, the cafe that has being run by the Sewell family for 70 years will be replaced by a " visitor welcome building in the cafe facility that can be operated indoors and outdoors", cutting through the jargon this means the outdoor cafe, loved by residents and visitors, would go. The main entry would be from New Road there and are also worrying references to pay events taking place on the lawns; it is essential we maintain the lawns as with the rest of the glorious gardens. There have been consultations, for what they are worth, now let the people decide, old and young. We must preserve this lovely and historic part of Brighton from the developers, Hands off our Royal Pavilion

  • Ban TV advertising of exploitative companies
These advertisements are aimed at sections of society who are in dire financial need, or there would be no demand, and it is not likely that obtaining a 'payday loan' at exorbitant interest rates or gambling on-line will be to the benefit of individuals, their families and ultimately society as a whole. It is not difficult to imagine the distress that will ensue repaying loans of over 1000% APR. as advertised on billboard information for the same companies. We believe that a civilised society would not only end this type of commercial exploitation swiftly, but would legislate immediatley to close these industries down, review why they have been allowed to operate for so long and publish details of the individuals who have been profiting by them and defending them to Government.
