• Say NO to the Usk Valley Incinerator
Monmouthshire County Council is dealing with an application to create a waste incinerator/power station to operate in a rural location near the River Usk (at Trostrey Court, near Llancayo). The incinerator would take waste wood, and refuse-derived fuel, including plastic. The plans involve three chimneys, 17 metres high (more than 55 feet). Despite there being a climate change emergency, and the fact that official assessments have indicated that there are enough incinerators in this area to deal with our own waste, the plan is to develop an industrial scale power station on green fields in the Usk valley. Many issues still remain unclear - visual impact, noise, pollution, health, air flows – but many are all too clear: truck-loads of waste will be brought down country lanes to feed a polluting, C02-emitting power plant. The current application, part of a scheme expanded since 2007 in dribs and drabs, could be presented to a future planning meeting at any time, with objectors getting just 21 days’ notice. The planning matter is being handled by the case officer, Kate Bingham ([email protected]) The application is ref: DM/2018/01641 Sign our petition to STOP this scheme now before it is too late.

  • Tell retailers to stock plastic free toiletries
We know 80% of people are concerned about plastic pollution [1] and want to do more to reduce the amount of single-use plastic they use. But retailers don’t always make it easy to find plastic-free products. We know that many retailers are starting to take action to prevent plastic pollution in certain areas of their business. But they need to know that promoting plastic travel minis without offering plastic-free alternatives is no longer acceptable. By acting on your feedback they can inspire the market & help us all escape from plastic pollution. Why is this important: Holidaymakers cause a 40% surge in marine litter entering the Mediterranean [2]. Research [3] estimates that 980 tonnes of mini-plastic shampoo bottles are being dumped by British holidaymakers abroad each year - that’s equivalent to two-and-a-half Boeing 747s. In one year alone 15.5 million people bought travel miniatures (amounting to a whopping 103 million products) but just under half of them dumped the packaging afterwards! A spokesperson for Thomas Cook said [4] the issue of single-use plastic matters to 90% of its customers, according to a survey of more than 3,000 people. “Significantly for the travel industry, the amount of plastic litter going into the Mediterranean increases by 40% during the summer months, demonstrating a direct link between our industry and plastic pollution.” On the back of its research, Thomas Cook has said it could save 70 million pieces of single-use plastic in the next year alone. Together we can make a difference Retailers listen to what their customers say and by signing our petition you’ll be making your voice heard and telling them we want a choice and plastic-free alternatives can and should be available. Find out what else you can do by getting involved with our Plastic Free Travel campaign. • Port Pollution Crisis in Southampton
Southampton is the number one cruise terminal in Northern Europe welcoming two million passengers every year on 500 vessels. 85% of the UK cruise market is based in Southampton, which is the only port capable of receiving such large vessels. In June 2019, sustainable transport group Transport & Environment revealed that in 2017, Carnival Corporation & PLC, the world’s largest cruise operator, emitted nearly 10 times more sulphur oxide around European coasts than all 260+ million European cars. Southampton is in the top four of Europe’s most polluted ports. Cruise ship emissions include sulphur oxide, which forms sulphate aerosols and fine particles that harm human health, cause acid rain, and acidify the seas. Additionally, cruise ships are emitting poisonous nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide. Carnival’s cruise ships are being powered 97% by fossil fuel. The cruise company has committed to building nine Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered ships by 2025 to add to the two already in its fleet. But powering ships with the, albeit cleaner, natural gas has its own environmental risks. Spills at shipyards during refuelling or on board release methane, an explosive greenhouse gas, 30 times worse for the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Additionally, LNG is often obtained through fracking. The World Health Organisation has named Southampton as one of the most polluted cities in the UK. Southampton City Council estimates that 23% of the air pollution in the city comes from the port. Public Health England’s Strategic Plan (2016 to 2020) identifies reducing the health impacts of local air pollution as a priority. In depth research analysis by Transport and Environment shows a direct link between docked cruise ship pollution and illnesses such as childhood asthma, cardio vascular disease, lung cancer, and cardiopulmonary conditions. The Association of British Ports Southampton hopes, by 2020, to be the first UK ‘smart port’, which will enable all shipside activity to reach zero emissions. Carnival is apparently not willing to make the shift voluntarily, so we need the government to step in and mandate zero emission standards. According to Carnival’s Sustainability Report (2016), the company currently purchases 0.1% of electricity globally for dockside power. The company refuses to adapt to shore-side electricity, instead opting to keep engines running continuously whilst in port. Please sign this petition to demand that Carnival Corporation retrofit all current and future vessels for shore-side electricity, thereby cutting Southampton Port emissions to zero and contributing to a sustainable, low carbon economy and a healthier city.

  • Caregivers Rights to Speak for and on behalf of their Adult Child with Mental Health Problems
My son took his life, age 23 yrs. His mental health for the last 4 years, since losing his father to Esophageal Cancer, in 2015 was up and down. He received some treatment & support in 2016/17 but was discharged in 2018, deemed well enough to no longer need the services. His mental health then deteriorated further, his life spiralled out of control and he was in complete denial about his health and completely lacking any insight into his problems. He also may have felt he needed to mask/hide his problems because; I believe they may have been too uncomfortable for him to talk about. When an Adult child is out of the "system"; It is very difficult to get them back into it unless they Engage, Co-operate or visit their GP or actively seek treatment. My argument is that they are too unwell to engage, especially when they lack insight into their condition. The problem the loved one, parent or care giver then faces is, in my experience, no-one will listen to you because: (they are over 18) and the Adult Child either refuses or does not seek help, which then leads to to them missing out on treatment or not receiving it at all. Not listening to the parent/caregiver or their loved ones, because of confidentiality, in these circumstances, is in my opinion, "ridiculous". The parent/caregiver or loved one is usually the closest to these individuals and knows them best of all. This has to stop and common sense must prevail. If the Adult child has a history of Mental Health problems, has a confirmed diagnosis, has sick notes and medication.........Caregivers/parents and close loved ones, must not have the confidentiality card shown to them. Healthcare providers must intervene and listen to the the people who are speaking up for and on behalf of their Adult child/loved one. We are all responsible for SAFEGUARDING. We don't want to hear: "Call the Police". The Police are not adept at Mental Health issues and the unwell individual does not need this; they need care and assessments by professionally trained Psychiatric Dr's/Consultants or Senior Psychiatric Nurses and even if the Adult Child has never had an episode of Mental ill health, their nearest and dearest, who know them best and want to help them need to be listened to. We cannot let any more young men or women slip through the net because "They Wont Engage" or "We cannot talk to you". This is a fob off and an insult. (Perhaps the individual would engage if you knew how to engage them). I never want another Mother/Father/Caregiver or Loved One, to go through the extensive and heart wrenching pain I am going through right now. I plead for your support and for common sense to prevail. We need to increase the availability of mental health resources and to reduce barriers to accessing care. (The World Health Organisation), (International Association for Suicide Prevention) and the (World Federation for Mental Health) all agree that barriers to accessing care need to be removed. Wikipedia Thank you all so much for your support and reading and sharing my petition.

  • Please Declare a Climate and Environmental Emergency Now
The first line of the executive summary of the 2018 report of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says “Limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.” In order to make those societal changes now, we need our elected representatives to declare a climate and environmental emergency. If that action is not taken now, and consequently global warming exceeds 1.5°C, then the climate will change irriversibly (it already is) and within our lifetimes, we will experience unprecendented disruption to our social systems and ability to provide basic needs like food. These impacts are already being felt in the UK.

  • The U.K. Government must publicly condemn the use of child detention centres in the USA
America is currently separating young children from their parents at borders, and placing them alone in detention centres, without access to clean water, beds, contact with family members, or proper care. Migrants have been kept in cells at freezing temperatures, and many of them have died due to lack of proper medical care. The US government have used children as bait to arrest and deport family members who come forward to care for them. Human Rights Watch spoke to an 11 year old in one of the detention centres, caring for his toddler brother, in a cell crowded with other children. When they spoke to the brothers, the little one had matted hair, and a awful cough, with eyes half closed with fatigue. They had been in there for three weeks, with no contact with their relatives or the outside world. US border control are holding many children, as young as two years old, in jail-like border control facilities for weeks or months at a time without access to showers or clean clothes, with many children becoming sick. All migrants have the right to be treated with dignity, humanity, and compassion, and children are entitled to additional safeguards under both US and international law. It is time the U.K. government as the USA's closest allies take action and publicly condemn these human rights abuses.

  • Save Metropolitan Open Land in Whitton
    - Metropolitan Open Land is important to all Londoners as they are a resource for biodiversity, act as a green lung, and promote wellbeing in general by providing open views. - It will be located far from the point of identified need; Fulwell & the Hamptons. In Whitton and Twickenham, there is a surplus of school places. - The school's existing Hampton Site is large enough to accommodate the school on one site (in a new purpose-built building). However, the Council wants to sell that land for housing. - The planning committee was told by officers and the applicant that they effectively had the choice of either giving the school planning permission or it would be closed down. They were also told incorrectly that expanding existing schools have to be fully funded by the borough (without any reference given to Basic Need mechanism where the Government pays the majority of the cost). - Location is wholly unsuitable for a school due to dangerous access being at the foot of a 1850s narrow humped back bridge, and the school placed next to a noisy railway line. - Dangerous main entrance shared with a landscapers/builders yard that has HGV traffic arriving and departing at the same time as pupils. - Being located outside its main 80% catchment area which will result in extra congestion and pollution, as the A316 cuts off Whitton from the rest of Richmond Borough and there are only two highly congested crossing points for road traffic. - The sixth form is an over-development of MOL as there is already a massive oversupply of sixth form / tertiary education places in the borough. - Land allocated to playing fields are excessive and if the scheme goes ahead the size of these needs to be reduced and more land handed over as an extension to Heathfield Recreation Ground as compensation. - Insufficient bus services are being provided; Transport for London wanted funding for a lot more bus services but these were negotiated down by the Government. This will result in more pupils traveling to school by car than projected in the Travel Plan. - The Hospital Bridge Road site is burial land and the London Plan policy 7.23 seeks to protect it. This was not addressed by Richmond Council. This proposal will result in Hounslow losing around a third of her burial supply. - The proposed building does not meet modern energy efficiency standards which will increase pollution and cost the school more in running costs. - The applicant has not carried out the requests in the GLA Stage 1 Report by not seriously looking at sites in Hounslow, reducing the footprint of the school buildings or the carpark, and other issues such as the use of render rather than brick. - Hounslow Council requested conditions to make the bridge safer and for there to be cycle lanes and extra crossings added to the road around the site etc (as the site borders their Borough). These were hidden from the planning committee and were not mentioned in the Officers Report.

  • Build 100 affordable homes in Southwold
Southwold is dying because local people are being priced out of homes by holiday lets. Two thirds of homes are holiday lets. The average house price is 21 times the average wage. We need 100 more affordable homes to rent quickly before our community dies. Our average age is 65. We want to hear children playing on our greens again. We want a vibrant community that welcomes visitors but is not banished by them. The government still subsidies second home owners who pay no rates. Local homes are developed into five bedroom holiday lets. Cleaners are bussed in. This is social apartheid. East Suffolk Council say that we have enough affordable homes, when we hear 40 local people applied for one last week. We need 100 as soon as possible in Southwold Ward which includes Reydon and Walberswick, but definitely before the next Council elections in 2023. As seen on Anglia TV on Friday evening.

  • Improve road safety on Lodge Lane , Keymer
We want West Sussex County Council to address the issue of pedestrian and cyclist safety on Lodge Lane. Lodge Lane links the village of Keymer to the South Downs national park. A 40mph speed limit applies over the southern section of the road from Keymer to the junction with New Road (B2112). This section of Lodge Lane has no footpath and is overhung by trees. Visibility is poor for motorists. There are no street lights in the area. The route is heavily used by walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages at all times of day and night. It is an access route to Downlands school and a leisure route to the National Park. Guests staying at the camp site at the Lodge Lane/New Road junction naturally want to access village facilities, itself to be encouraged as a boost to trade. Traffic on this stretch of road is likely to increase as a result of residential development in the local area, increasing the danger to walkers and cyclists. We want West Sussex County Council to address this risk to members of our community, enabling us to move safely around our village and to encourage both local people and visitors to explore the village and the National Park.

  • Save Our Day Centre in Norfolk
The staff recently have had to turn away 9 new referrals due to the closure so there is potential money still to be made. The Local Government should be investing in these day centres not closing them. I would have thought that we should be helping people remain in their own homes and support family carers who need that respite. The Swallows Day Centre provides a home from home and the difference between The Swallows and most other day centres is that the centre takes on clients with extra needs such as people that need feeding etc. For anyone moving from The Swallows with certain needs they will need to travel a distance to find an alternative day centre. Why then is this not an important issue! I would be happy to talk about how it is affecting my family too. Please help!
