• Ban Dangerous Pesticides in Haslemere and surrounding villages
The use of glyphosates has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. It is not acceptable that ourselves, our children and the animals we share our community with are being routinely exposed to these chemicals whether we like it or not. This is a matter of great importance for those of us who care about each other's health and the health of our children, our cats, our dogs and all the flora and fauna of this city, of course including our beloved bees. Frensham Parish Council has successfully banned glyphosate and there have been no issues with excessive weeds! Let’s also help to bring our biodiversity back! Surrey County council (Highways) contracts Waverley Borough Council to spray glyphosate on our street verges, round houses, schools, playing fields and churches. Therefore we are concerned about children exposed to this proven carcinogenic herbicide. We at the Haslemere Transition group would welcome unsprayed wildflower verges as an alternative; safe havens for pollinators and insects as well as bee friendly planting in public spaces. • STOP NEW OIL DRILLING IN PUDDLETOWN
Across the globe and in the UK itself climate catastrophe is upon us. We are witnessing floods in the UK, reduction of productive farmlands, extreme weather events, uncontrollable fires, a rapid decline in plant and animal life in the UK and around the world. On May 16th 2019 the Dorset Council recognised a state of Climate Emergency: “We have an opportunity and an obligation to demonstrate leadership – thinking globally about the implications of climate change and acting locally to help address it in our communities.’’ Many councils and our parliament now recognise a state of Climate Emergency. But invariably business carries on as usual and CO2 is continuing to rise at a terrifying rate. This application, validated by Dorset Council, for drilling a new oil well is a prime example of this inability to grasp the reality we find ourselves in and to act accordingly. We demand that you stand by your stated obligation, show leadership and act locally to prevent the worst ravages of catastrophic climate change. Furthermore, this planning application directly contravenes the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF, Feb 2019) which states that “The purpose of the planning system is to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development…meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. The environmental objective includes, “mitigating and adapting to climate change, including moving to a low carbon economy.” Therefore, this application is in direct breach of the NPPF. South Western Energy, Ltd, aspires to produce oil from the proposed well for at least 20 years. The oil would then be trucked with 8 articulated tankers a day from 9:00 to 17:00 to Fawley Oil Refinery, 50 miles away Please sign this petition and tell Dorset Council to abide by the NPPF, and to act on behalf of the environment and future generations. Do not approve this application. We must act now as we are witnessing ecosystems collapsing worldwide. We must get off fossil fuels and move to a low carbon economy. Dorset Council, you as our elected representatives, work for us. We demand that you stand by your own words, and Government policy. Do not hasten us to our own demise. Say NO to South Western Energy and drilling in Puddletown.

  • Lidl/Aldi for Stornoway
Because there is very little choice between Coop and Tesco on an ever expanding Island. With tourism being high in the summer months shopping for locals can be a nightmare another couple of shops would help reduce the chaos.

  • We want Aldi to open a store on the Isle of Skye
The island and it’s population is growing with many developments happening, not to mention the thousands of tourists that visit throughout the year !! Another supermarket is badly needed for more options and choices for us all . It would also benefit the island by supplying jobs for many people that live here.

  • Save Chineham Library
Hampshire County Council have announced plans to close 10 libraries as part of cost cutting plans. In addition to signing this petition, it's really important that everyone responds directly to the consultation at tiny.cc/hccsurvey. Our libraries do more than simply loan books. They provide events for children, internet access for the elderly, book clubs and more. They’re places for the whole community to come together and learn. Libraries are a door into the world, we need to protect them for future generations.

  • Stop bosses paying illegal wages
Too many companies are breaking the law by not paying hard working staff the legal minimum wage - and they’re getting away with it. The people who are being short changed the most are those who can least afford it - carers looking after the elderly, people in hospitality working back breaking 12 hour shifts. HMRC is in charge of investigating companies for paying below minimum wage but catch only a small number of the companies paying illegal wages. When companies are caught, they pay on average only 90% of the wages they owe - making it cheaper to break the law than pay workers properly. HMRC can fine dodgy companies up to 200% of the lost wages, but they rarely do. Bigger fines would make businesses much less likely to break the law and make sure fewer workers are paid illegally low wages.

  • Open Letter to the Management of Bhaktivedanta Manor
We want to bring to the temple managements attention the shock and dismay felt by the undersigned community, regarding the temples hosting of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, leader of the Conservative and the Home Secretary Priti Patel during a general election in early December 2019. The head of the Communication department at the temple is quoted as saying “Bhaktivedanta Manor is a place of worship and spiritual education [and] therefore is not affiliated with any particular political party. However, we respect and honour all who want to visit here, at any time.” However, hosting a candidate during an election has been received by many as a political act. Boris Johnson stood in our temple room in front of Srila Prabhupada and in full view of Sri Radha Gokulananda, saying, "the values that you espouse here in this community..., I hope you don't me saying, since the election is only four days away, ...these are the values we wish to support in our Conservative party." He then went on to say that on Thursday, the day of the election, he wanted to "get Brexit done." He quoted his parties tag-line several times. This is a political speech at a very political time which we feel strongly that the Manor should not have allowed to happen. Many people have claimed that this is Lord Krsna's mercy, an auspicious event, a victory for ISKCON and Hinduism in the UK and a great favour bestowed upon the community and the congregation. However, many of us are upset, confused and angry. To allow them to make a speech exhorting their politics is unacceptable in our place of worship. The subsequent claim that the temple is not aligned to any one party is naivety at best and shameful at worst. Furthermore, if the values of these politicians are the same values that we hold as Hare Krsna devotees then we have moved very far away from those that Srila Prabhupada has given us. It is understandable that the Manor feels like hosting politicians is a positive thing for the community. Many of us know full well the struggle it has been to be regarded as a genuine faith group, to move away from the branding of 'cult,' but there are many, many other days that Johnson and Patel could have visited if their attraction to the temple and its perceived 'values' is real. But hosting them four days before an incredibly important election and allowing a campaign speech in the temple room is irresponsible, offensive and divisive. We need these actions to be considered so that in future; political speeches are not made in the temple room and the Manor holds true to their politically neutral stance.'

  • Stop preventable sight loss for NHS patients because of delays to treatment
A mother of three has lost her sight because of delays to appointments and a lack of staff which failed to treat her glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye condition caused by the optic nerve being damaged. An investigation into the problem has predicted that up to 22 people go blind each month because of glaucoma not being treated early enough. We can't stand by whilst people are treated this way. Our NHS should be there for us when we need it most, not pushed to the brink because of staff shortages and more. During the election the Conservative party made big promises for our NHS about specialist staff and reducing NHS waiting times. Now it’s time for the government to move fast to act on these commitments - and stop preventable sight loss as a matter of urgency. Will you sign the petition to the Health Secretary now to up the pressure? Thousands of us speaking out today could force him to act.

  • Stop gambling companies broadcasting football
For too many football fans, it’s not possible to watch a football match unless they have multiple bets. With betting companies showing matches for free as long as you place a bet, the link between football and problem gambling is made even stronger. By selling broadcasting rights to betting companies like Bet 365, the FA is fuelling a gambling addiction crisis. The NHS estimates that more than 400,000 people in England have a gambling addiction. It’s costing the UK £1.2 bn a year and has ruined lives. The FA should do the right thing and terminate the contract with all betting companies and not allow them to show live FA Cup matches.

  • Give current 3rd year students the NHS nursing grant
This is the only student nursing cohort not to receive any form of a bursary in England The cohort before them were the last to receive a bursary. Some of these students deferred starting their training for many reasons before the end of the bursary was announced. The cohort immediately after them will benefit from the new grant. This is very unfair for this cohort and many have suffered huge financial hardship for the career they love, a career that will protect us all in our hour of need. Let's help them in theirs.
