Birds of prey are being illegally killed in large numbers although prosecutions for the illegal killing these birds is at an all time low. There are clear pointers that these birds are mainly being killed, by shooting, pole traps and poisoning, in areas associated with game shooting. New legislation is required to make it possible to prosecute the organisations responsible for this slaughter as well as the individuals who actually perform the killing. We are in imminent danger of the extinction of several rare species of raptors, like Hen Harriers, So action is desperately needed.

Cymer Afan Comprehensive School is at the heart of our community and situated in the Upper Afan Valley. The teachers are above average with a rating of 4.41/5 stars. The children receive excellent education and this goes to show as the school is 6th out of the whole of Wales. The children would have to travel at least 2 hours minimum each day, on not the best valley roads. This inturn would affect the children's health and well-being.

We are all calling on the Chancellor to ring-fence mental health spend in his Autumn Budget. The government has announced additional funding for mental health - £1.4 billion over five years to deliver the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health and £1.25 billion for the Future In Mind programme for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. This money is a step forward but is only a fraction of what mental health services need to meet growing demands. Across England, for the second year in a row, over half of Clinical Commissioning Groups – the bodies that decide how money is spent locally - say they plan to reduce the proportion of their budget spend on mental health. This is unacceptable. The money needed to transform mental health services and save lives is just not reaching the front line. Waiting times are too long, people are not receiving the best care in the community and people are having to travel too far for in-patient services. On November 22, in his Budget, the Chancellor Philip Hammond can make a difference and ring-fence mental health budgets to make sure that the promised money actually reaches local mental health services. Imagine fleeing domestic abuse, finding the courage to start a new life, only to discover you can’t find work, claim benefits, or even rent a home. That’s the reality for many domestic abuse survivors, whose abusers often steal or destroy their identification documents – passports, birth certificates and driving licences. Emergency ID would enable survivors to prove their identity and citizenship and allow them to access benefits and housing support immediately. It could also be used to support them when trying to gain DBS checks, driving licences or passports.

The ‘Paradise Papers’ are just the latest in a long line of tax scandals. The system, which is rigged to benefit the privileged few at the expense of everyone else, is broken. The impact on our public services of these corrupt practices, protected by a veil of secrecy, has been devastating. After seven years of austerity, it is time for irresponsible tax dodging to come to an end. HMRC, the government body tasked with policing the tax system, has seen its staff numbers and budget halved since it was formed in 2005. Meanwhile, the UK government has failed to take the opportunity to clean up the offshore system, in territories like Bermuda that are under its control, and make it harder for individuals and companies to avoid tax. It is little wonder that tax dodgers are taking advantage. Tax Justice UK, the country’s leading campaign organisation for a fairer tax system, is now calling for the UK government to take decisive action to end the scourge of tax avoidance, once and for all, by tightening up on enforcement and introducing new transparency rules.

Scotland proudly leads the way on many things and I feel we should now take the lead and look at on old tradition and a way for everyone to enjoy fireworks without causing distress to sensitive members of our society. Currently, fireworks cause fear and distress and unnecessary suffering to many family pets (we can show you video evidence) Not only family pets but livestock, wild life such as foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits etc who are terrified by the noise of fireworks going off for days before, during and after November 5th.. In addition, old people are scared in their own homes, vulnerable people such as those with dementia and war veterans to name but a few who are also traumatised with the noise of exploding fireworks going off for days at all times. It's my suggestion that silent fireworks would work well for everyone and maybe, just maybe, everyone could enjoy a new tradition and a spectacular sight. Also, if Scotland can lead the way with this then maybe other parts of the UK would follow suit as not only is there a strength of feeling over the distress fireworks cause in Scotland, but in all parts of the UK . I would like to see the Scottish Government take a more serious stance on the damage these "entertainment items" have and start a debate on the benefits of silent fireworks as opposed to the current distress causing fireworks. As a nation, if we were to take such a lead would this not create a more inclusive society and all members, even those with livestock and pets, would be able to enjoy the sights? Additionally, the cost of November the 5th would be the price of a box of fireworks, and not the sanity of our pets, our livestock, our vulnerable citizens and our wildlife.
