*STORY BURIED BY BREXIT* Last week before the referendum vote, many of you would have been hearing about this case. Ellie Butler was removed from loving, caring grandparents who had brought her up "as their own", and handed over to her abusive parents, who terrorised and abused her emotionally and physically until she was murdered at the age of 6. Despite Ellie herself reportedly pleading with social workers not to go back to her 'parents', she was sent back to live with them by two independent, private and profit-making social workers (Services4Children), under the guidance of a judge, Mrs Justice Hogg. In what has been described as a very unusual case, the order given by the judge effectively 'wiped the slate clean' for Ellie's Father, Ben Butler, who had previously been jailed for shaking her as a baby. This meant that professionals, including school staff and local authority social services, were unable to protect Ellie from terrible abuse, due of the special order of this judge. To imagine what Ellie went through is horrifying. To be taken from her grandparents and her loving home despite pleading otherwise, and sent to these monsters: this girl was failed by the adults who were supposed to keep her safe. Ellie's grandad Neal spent his life savings fighting to prevent Ellie being sent back to her parents. Very sadly, his wife (Ellie's grandmother) died on the first day of Ben Butler's trial for murder. He had previously said that Mrs Justice Hogg would have "blood on her hands" if Ellie was returned. After Ellie's parents were convicted, Ellie's Grandad continued to advocate for his beloved granddaughter on TV and in the press, determined to let people know the truth about what had happened. He is desperate for a public enquiry, and to ensure that this can never happen again to another child. The Brexit vote has swamped the news; please don't let Ellie and her grandparents down by forgetting about them.

Democracy and the future of the outdoor pool! Future of the pool! The pool is outdated and needs investment. The lining is cutting children's feet and may fail at any time, resulting in a hefty bill or the closure of the pool. Democracy! We voted for the pool to be refurbished and it is not being refurbished. The decision has been made by a councillor from Wantage, so we can't even vote her out! Three explanations have been given by the Vale. 1) It is too expensive: but the Vale have not got any estimates from pool contractors, or assessed what could be done with the 307,500 which would be half of the available capital budget. 2) Non-voters have to be considered: the Vale have also said that although 81% of people who voted chose Option A, this was only 3206 people in Abingdon (about 10%), and so the vote can be ignored. This is not democratic... and very concerning. Only the views of those that participate in democracy can contribute to democratic process. In fact, this had the highest participation of any consultation ever held in Abingdon, reflecting the importance of this issue. If everyone in Abingdon had voted, perhaps the majority would have been even higher! We just left the EU on a 4% difference with 28% non-participation, but apparently democracy only applies to the 'big' decisions 3) That we 'misunderstood' the consultation and that refurbishment meant 'repair' and not capital investment: I made a formal complaint to the Vale on this matter, the response to the complaint concluded that we did not in fact misunderstand anything and that 'the current planned works are not consistent with the description of scenario A in the consultation... anyone 'voting' for scenario A and contributing to the 81% overwhelming preference for scenario A would be disappointed with the council's planned works'

Lack or work life balance destroys family life. The UK is near the top of the list of countries for working the longest hours. As a teacher and union rep I have seen that overwork causes stress and mental and physical illness. Taking away the working time directive due to leaving the EU will only make this worse as it will take away the protection of breaks in the working day and the limit to hours overall. The law gives EU workers the right to a minimum number of holidays each year, rest breaks, and rest of at least 11 hours in any 24 hours; restricts excessive night work; a day off after a week's work; and provides for a right to work no more than 48 hours per week.

It is utter hypocrisy for you to continue to draw your salary after June 2016. You should go out and look for a proper job.

Hamed has close family and a loving stable environment in the UK. He has been through unbelievable trauma and was settling into a useful existence with a family who were looking after his needs and caring for him as a son. Hamed's being tricked into having his fingerprints taken means that although he has been settled in the UK for getting on for a year, he can suddenly be deported to Holland and thence to Afghanistan at any moment.

Not only do Cornwall's farmers and fisherman currently receive benefits from the European Community's Common Agricultural Policy and Common Fisheries Policy but the county has received tens of millions of pounds a year in structural and convergence funds to support local economic growth and communities. In the 2014-2020 budget Cornwall had been allocated 592 million euros. Should Britain leave the EU before 2020 it is essential that this allocation is matched to continue the growth and development which Cornwall needs.

Michael Gove has been the most divisive Education Secretary in living memory. He has undermined the teaching profession and the education system and set children up to fail. We believe his repeated grave errors of judgement make him unfit to lead the country and we do not wish to serve a government with him at its head.

More & more family homes are being turned into multiple occupancy housing, squeezing up to 10 small bedsits into one terrace house. Conditions are poor to dangerous for the tenants, extra stress is put on the local community & services. Council resources are drained as some landlords are claiming around £1200 pm per bedsit, meaning that more than double the number of people could be housed decently if the coucil stopped dealing with such landlords. People deserve safe, secure, affordable council housing. The following should help give an example of how this affects both tenants & neighbours. An existing development has already caused problems such as raw sewage backing up into our property, rats, mice, anti-social behaviour, noise, rubbish spilling out into street etc. Tenants I have spoken with live in cramped, damp, unhealthy conditions and are somewhat reluctant to speak out against the landlords. In our direct dealings with the landlord, he has not taken remedial action without council involvement and has been agressive at times. At least 2 further developments are underway within doors of each other, with the developers exploiting loopholes in planning to increase the number of available bedsits. Everyone suffers - except the slum landlord.
