• Stop the energy cost rises
Please sign the petition as it is in all of our interests if we can stop this hike in prices. There will be so many people who literally can’t even scrape together that amount of money and the anxiety this will be causing is unacceptable.

  • Exemption from hosepipe ban for households and individuals growing food
Growing vegetables by households or individuals, reduces the environmental and carbon footprint of this part of our diet. If effort has already been put into such a garden, it could be wiped out if plants die or suffer as a result of drought. Water used for the production of essential food-stuffs, in such a way as to reduce carbon emissions, should not be rationed in the same way as that used for watering flowers or lawns or filling paddling pools.

  • Protect lodgers' deposits and privacy
With rent prices soaring across the UK, more and more renters are resorting to alternative living arrangements like living with landlords. When you live with a landlord, you have very little rights or protections as a lodger. Landlords can freely find legal loopholes and abuse the system, withholding lodgers' deposits and evicting you with as little as 7 days' notice for practically any reason. My landlord installed cameras around the house without my knowledge and consent, then evicted me after I asked for privacy at home. They threatened to withhold half of a £1200 deposit, even after signing that there were no damages upon checkout. Everyone renting in the UK deserves basic legal protections.

  • Stop schools locking toilets and denying children use
It is dangerous for a child to be denied toilet access. It can result in a loss of self confidence and cause many long term health and wellbeing problems which can surface in later life.

  • Calling all broadcasters: celebrate in November the founding of the Welfare State 80 years ago
This year we celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Another very important anniversary deserving wide publicity this November is to celebrate 80 years since William Beveridge published his Beveridge Report. Many of the recommendations made in that report became the basis of post-war reforms known as the Welfare State. This gave people hope after WW2 and helped millions of us to have better health, housing, education and employment. Such positive improvements demand a national celebration and would bring us all together to show our gratitude to the founder and how he inspired subsequent governments to tackle the five 'giants' - Want, Disease, Ignorance, Squalor and Idleness. A centrepiece of the celebrations could be to show Ken Loach's documentary "Spirit of '45". Survivors of pre-war poverty and wartime destruction talk touchingly of their relief as their lives improved thanks to Beveridge. We are living through very difficult, depressing times. This celebration of the Welfare State will remind us that we have survived difficult times in the past and that answers can be found to our problems.
