• Support for the young service users of Kids Company.
Kids Company provided an invaluable service to vulnerable young people which should of been fully supported by our government. These young service users have now been left by the wayside and its important that they get the support that they need.

  • Unilever - clean up your mess!
Unilever exposed their workers and thousand other to harmful mercury pollution at their Kodaikanal thermometer assembly plant in India. The factory operators did not give its workers any protective equipment or information about the disastrous impact that mercury has on health. The factory owned by Hindustan Unilever also dumped toxic mercury around their plant, and this has not been cleaned up in the 14 years since this plant was shut down. The contamination continues to impact forests and groundwater. The workers cannot afford private healthcare. They have been fighting for Unilever to clean up the toxic contamination and compensate them for their medical expenses as a result of mercury for many long years. They need us to stand with them now, more than ever. Paul Polman, Unilever’s CEO, prides himself in heading a company that he says is accountable to its workers, and to the environment. Let’s ask him to put his words into practice by asking him to clean up his company’s toxic mess and to compensate the workers who have lost their health and in some cases, their children, to Unilever’s unethical practices. As the global CEO, he has the power and resources to either take unilateral action or pressure Hindustan Unilever – a Unilever subsidy – to take immediate action itself. Sign the petition.

  • Death doesn’t constitute grounds for a refund
Bunn Leisure told 78-year-old Jean Kinahan, from Croydon, they would not refund her £424 for a week’s stay in September after her partner James Burgess, 76, passed away on Monday, despite her having paid an optional £25 cancellation cover. Mrs Kinahan said: “I rang on Tuesday to put them in the picture. She said if your partner was sick we could give you a refund but death doesn’t constitute a refund.” It's plain unfair, she has already suffered. This is a minnow of a campaign, but I hope it shows the lack of human compassion of companies towards ordinary customers. • Hold the Financial Conduct Authority to account for its actions
At the moment that Financial Conduct Authority is able to make statements or take action with absolute impunity and if clients lose money or advisers lose money as a result, then there is no effective remedy to claim compensation . For example, in the EEA Life Settlements Funds case mentioned above, the Financial Conduct Authority issued a guidance consultation into their proposals for ensuring that the investment was not marketed to unsuitable clients. There were several ways in which this could have been resolved, unfortunately when issuing the consultation guidance the Financial Services Authority (at the time) issued a statement that described the investment in inaccurate, emotive and pejorative terms. This led to an immediate run on the fund and consequent closure, trapping many clients in the fund and creating large scale immediate losses to existing clients. The Financial Conduct Authority has since then been highly active in trying to encourage any client to seek compensation from advisers in order to distract investors from the part it played. Whilst I am wholly supportive of clients making claims against advisers where poor advice has been given, it is not feasible to suggest that all clients were poorly advised, whereas all investors have been adversely affected by the Financial Conduct Authority statement and subsequent refusal to accept any responsibility. The status of immunity against prosecution for damages simply cannot be justified. Any person or body with the ability to affect third parties by its actions, whether verbal, written or by dint of action must be capable of being held responsible for any disadvantage caused to those third party (ies)

  • To get all energy companies to repay the money overpaid by prepayment energy customers
Around 5.9 million people in the UK have a prepayment energy meter. According to citizens advice these customers have overpaid for their electricity and gas by £226 a year! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-33369672 Many of the people who prepay their energy are families struggling to make ends meet, or elderly people - while people have had to choose between light or heat companies have racked in massive profits that have not fed back to lower the prices - in fact EDF declared an "operating loss" on their prepayment statement this year! http://www.mirror.co.uk/money/energy-giant-raked-massive-profit-3143336 Customers who have overpaid their energy through prepaid meters have been doing so for a number of years and is an industry wide practise. Customers who prefer to prepay for their gas and electric should not be penalised for doing so. It is not enough to tell customers to switch companies, customers who have been with a provider a period of time and who been overcharged as a matter of routine should receive a refund on any over payment, and tell customers before they sign up if they are being overcharged.

  • Save Glasgow's Architectural Heritage
For years Glaswegians have had to live in the shadow of disastrous planning decisions, where beautiful relics from Glasgow's rich architectural heritage have been destroyed to be replaced by ugly concrete and metal buildings. The appearance of these buildings makes the whole environment of Glasgow appear depressing and has an adverse effect on how people interact with their city daily, if the city is charmless and ugly it is harder for Glaswegians to feel proud and motivated in their day to day lives. We need to learn from the mistakes made in the 70's I urge Glasgow City Council and NFU Mutual to not demolish this building and to find ways to retain the facade regardless of increasing costs, I urge Glasgow City Council to also not allow the demolition of any historical architecture in the city and for it all to be preserved for future generations. I urge all proud Glaswegians, proud Scots and lovers of Heritage and Architecture everywhere to please sign this petition. Let's not let Glasgow become an ugly soulless mistake of a city, which based on several recent planning decisions it sadly could become. Thank you

  • Simple law to stop misery of shoddy products.
Imagine if manufacturers had to say how long they expect their products to last and backed it with a guarantee. For the first time people will be able to make a real choice when they buy something. e.g. "Do I get the £15 kettle that lasts 1 year? or the £30 kettle that lasts 5-6 years?" This makes things simple. We deserve to know what we are buying! "Planned Obsolescence" (where manufacturers purposefully design their products to break or be unfixable) is on the rise. It might bring profits in for shortsighted companies, but it is a growing disaster for the environment and it means that we are stuck buying the same shoddy things again and again. Having your kettle/hoover/dishwasher break is not just annoying, it traps people in a cycle of poverty. But there's something we can do! If people know how long something is expected to last, we can see if the "cheap prices" are really worth it. It's likely that companies will realise that have to do better, and up the durability of their products or risk having to publish some dismal figures. Us consumers have been trapped by these companies strategies for too long and it's time for us to get some power back. The power of choice. Please sign the petition. The planet will thank us all. We can do it! Tara PS. Follow and share the campaign with the hashtag #built2break

  • Save Brunswick Town's Post Office
Brunswick Town in Hove is a densely-populated area and the Post Office proposed for closure is at the centre of the community, is very well used and has won many awards. Post Office Limited states that alternative provision will be accessible to residents but this provision is a mile away up a hill. We worry about elderly and infirm residents being able to access the new "merged" post office on Melville Road. Our Post Office in Brunswick Town provides a essential public service where people need it and we wholly oppose plans to close it.

  • empty flats
These flats are two bedroom properties that were part of the conditions of planning, they have been empty for nearly ten years as it seems there was never a completion date built into the contract, I have been on BM radio with Adrian Goldberg, written to my MP Steve McCabe these are supposed to be affordable flats that 22 families are being denied. Housing homeless families at affordable rents is vital to our society

  • Don't let Camelot Ruin the Lottery
There has been no consultation with the public to my knowledge. A lot of people live in hope of improving their lives with a lottery win. Camelot's argument that there will be bigger jackpots because there will be more roll overs may be factual but I'm sure most people would rather invest in the lottery as it stands. At present the odds on winning the top prize is approx. 13 million to 1. The new lottery due to start in October will make the odds 45 million to 1 and therefore make even the smaller prizes so much harder to win. Let's stop this before it happens and we will all have a better chance of winning.
