• Please do not close the Philosophy Programme at St Mary's University, Twickenham
We, the undersigned, urge the management at St Mary’s University not to close its Philosophy Programme, and to continue to offer students the opportunity to take a BA degree in Philosophy. St Mary’s offers single-honours degrees in Philosophy, as well as some joint-honours degrees with other subjects. It is known locally for its annual series of public lectures sponsored by the Royal Institute of Philosophy, which are well-attended by members of the community. Students and graduates value the discussion and innovative, dialogue-led teaching, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary engagement. These methods promote independence of thought and encourage intellectual curiosity both within and outside the academy. St Mary’s University has a long-standing tradition of inclusivity, and cites core values such as inclusiveness, generosity of spirit, respect and excellence. The diversity and creativity exemplified in teaching and research by the Philosophy team epitomise these values. Diversity is also reflected in the composition of the team itself (for instance, surpassing the 2011 UK average of just 24% of permanent posts held by women in philosophy). [1] By keeping the programme open, the institution have the opportunity to make a statement of intent: St Mary’s upholds the values of inquiry, scholarship and independence of thought; it upholds the value of the arts and humanities for everyone, especially in difficult times; and its support will not waver. We encourage St Mary’s to take this opportunity. [1] Beebee, H. and Saul, J., 2011. • Save Studio 24
As a resident of Edinburgh and long term clubber Studio 24 has, is and ALWAYS WILL BE a safe haven for unique, gifted and individually minded youngsters to share a safe common space to express themselves fully and safely, as well as perpetually. Hundreds of thousands of patrons have spent a multitude of nights enjoying the culture created within the club, one that has kept alive a special flame ignited in the golden eras of freedom and love throughout time. Those moving into the area obviously have a proper chip on their shoulder about what this venue stands for, and as such should PROPERLY have considered what environment they were choosing to live near and act accordingly rather than bullying the staff and patrons into the situation currently in process. This appeal is for anyone and everyone who has ever made lifelong connections, memories and values on the beautiful club dancefloor of Studios and the world, and an impassioned plea to keep said environment open to allow real love and passion to continue to flourish exponentially and forever. • A public statue and recognition for Hereward The Wake
We the scouts and leaders of 2nd Ely Scout Group, petition the City of Ely Council to acknowledge the Role in English history of Hereward the Wake, provide the city with a suitable statue recognising his importance as a local and national hero. Hereward the Wake (also known as Hereward the Outlaw or Hereward the Exile, c. 1035 – c.1072) was an 11th-century leader of local resistance to the Norman conquest of England. Hereward's base, when leading the rebellion against the Norman rulers, was in the Isle of Ely, and according to legend he roamed The Fens, covering North Cambridgeshire, Southern Lincolnshire and West Norfolk, leading popular opposition to William the Conqueror.

  • Make Binders Readily Available on the NHS
The trans community have suffered a lot over generations, and one of the issues is the price and accessibility of binders. Binders are usually sourced online at a high price rate because of the shipping and manufacturing, as well as most of them being made in America. This makes it significantly difficult for working class or unemployed trans men to find a cheaper alternative for their wellbeing. Binders are sold on Amazon and Ebay at lower prices, however in my experience, they are not very reliable and well made. I believe that as a gender non-conforming individual who uses binders myself, we should not have to pay for something that helps us feel more comfortable and helps with d***horia. Waiting lists for surgery for the trans community is very long and can take up to a certain amount of years. Surely, there should be a free service that helps until the surgery is finalised. Some trans people choose not to have surgery and that is completely their choice, but they should have access to good quality, free binders on the NHS that they can use everyday and feel themselves. If they can fund sexual health, then they can fund mental health. I believe that giving this opportunity to the trans and non-binary community will promote intersectionality, benefit mental health, and may even save lives.

  • Changing cannabis laws
Cannabis has been proven to have huge medicinal benefits, for lots of chronic and terminal conditions. The health benefits should out weigh the draconian laws on the Isle of Man. Jersey are doing it, so we don't need permission from the UK. Like they have said we do. Please sign and lets not only try to change for medicinal purposes but for possession, the amount of money saved through prison, legal fee's police time, money and resources.

  • Abandon the sale of the EcoHouse and heritage school in Western Park
We, the Leicester public, are rapidly losing our green spaces – 6 acres of allotments off Saffron Lane were sold last year. The Western Park golf course has been closed down, Oadby golf course is for sale as are 14 acres off Loughborough Road, 5 acres on Abbey Meadows and now 5 acres in Western Park. Without parks, where will our children learn to play football or ride bicycles? Will they have to pay an entrance fee? Where will we walk our dogs and breathe unpolluted air? We see our heritage privatised or gentrified, too. The Castle and its gardens, Wyggeston House, the City Rooms, the Pavillion in Western Park, Belgrave House, Braunstone Hall and now the rare surviving example of an Open Air School in Western Park. Heritage City, accessible only to those who can afford it? We say enough! Both the EcoHouse and the Open Air School are our heritage. Both were shining examples of progressive thinking, highlighting 'the way forward' in terms of public wellbeing and the health of the planet that sustains us. Clean air is a human right. The Council has Clean Air and Low Carbon policies. We want to see these put into practice - meaning the sell-off and building up of our green spaces has got to stop. As things stand, 20 houses will be constructed on the EcoHouse site. The heavily used carpark will be lost. Years of building upheaval will follow, as will the permanent transfer of our assets and park land into private pockets. This short term thinking - papering over the cracks of outdated 'economy first, people second' politics - is harmful to our rights and to the long term future of our city. Leicester City Council have no management plan for Western Park beyond 2016. Does this bode the sell-off of all of our beloved park? We, the people of Leicester, say no more selling off of our crown jewels! Our Mayor has pledged to build strong, resilient communities – how will he do this, if no space remains where those communities can come together? There are long term alternatives that put people and the future of our city before short term cash. Leicester City Council, put your pretty policies into practice, please.

  • Croxteth Hall Community Action Group
Croxteth Hall and Estate is a vital part of our community and it is essential that Liverpool City Council begin the process of finding an organisation to take over the running of the Hall and Estate. The Estate is currently losing over £1m per year, diverting much needed funds from an already overstretched council budget. It is clear that the council no longer have the will or the resources to prevent this stunning building and estate from falling further into disrepair. Opportunities for the local community are being lost due the current status and the uncertainty surrounding its future. The local community do not want to see another Stonebridge Cross, a development that has still not been completed and has not provided the associated benefits that where originally promised to the local community. We want to see the Hall and Estate put to better use, to be made into a beacon for the area and Liverpool, with access for the local community and the creation of jobs, education, training and much needed investment.

  • Support for formal Bridleways in Pelsall and Rushall
Roads are increasingly dangerous for the equestrian community with ever increasing traffic and speeding vehicles. It has never been more important to provide safe, off road riding for those who enjoy hacking out in our areas of natural beauty. Most landowners are understanding of their legal obligations to keep bridleways free from obstruction and provide suitable gates to provide access. There are no formal routes for the current equestrian community to safeguard their current pastime and access is threatening the informal existence of routes currently followed due to the installation of barriers to reduce off road biking nuisance. The equestrian community are proud of their links with the non-riding community who also enjoy and share some of the routes used whether it be for cycling or walking and wish to ascertain everyone's safety in the process.

  • Save Our Community Spaces, Mossley
The recent threat to auction off some of Mossley's community spaces has revealed the urgency to gather support for these spaces, which once gone will never be replaced. Cosgrove Gardens, Greaves Street ( encompassing Mossley's community orchard and the car park at Cross Street ) were withdrawn from auction. Spring Street car park and gardens have also been withdrawn from auction and are in the process of being registered as a community asset. However, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council will be reviewing all of these sites in the near future due to ongoing austerity that the council is facing. We are continuing to oppose the future sale of these public spaces and to ask that they be permanently removed from the list of land for sale so that these spaces can be continued to be enjoyed by the Mossley community. If you are interested in joining SOCS and supporting this vital work (in any way small or large), or just keeping up with what’s happening in your town, please contact: [email protected] or via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/669414999916345/
