• Support Native Americans Fighting for their Lives Sovereign Rights and our Planet against Big Oil
The largest gathering of Native Americans in history is under way as people from indigenous communities across the Americas and the world unite with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe to fight to protect the environment and ultimately their lives from the scourge of the fossil fuel industry. The North Dakota access pipeline (NDAPL) having been moved from its originally proposed route near the capital Bismarck now violates treaty land and threatens a people who have already suffered unspeakable genocide, treachery and persecution spanning centuries. Virgil Taken Alive, Standing Rock Member affirms: “Of the many atrocities we as Native Americans have faced and overcame, this is one which will affect not only us but all of mankind. Earth is our mother. We have to protect her.” The fact is, since 2009 when domestic oil production began ramping up, “the annual number of significant accidents on oil and petroleum pipelines has shot up by almost 60 percent, roughly matching the rise in U.S. crude oil production…” Only two days before this petition was drafted a subsidiary of the DAPL pipeline in Pennsyvlvania dumped 55,000 gallons of gasoline into the Susquehanna River. Should it be allowed to continue the DAPL will cross over the Ogallala Aquifer (one of the largest aquifers in the world) and under the Missouri River twice (the longest river in the United States), the inevitable contamination of these water sources makes the Dakota Access pipeline a serious threat to humanity. It will threaten everything from farming and drinking water to entire ecosystems, wildlife and food sources. People all over the world are fighting back against fossil fuels and NODAPL is ground zero in the largest oil guzzling nation on earth. What happens here will reverberate around the world. We call to you join the struggle. Help spread the word. Make the politicians hear our voices and have good thoughts and prayers for those on the front lines. • Colchester - Axe the Housing Act
The Housing and Planning Act is a threat to all except the large landlords and developers making money from the housing crisis. Council, housing association and private tenants have a common interest in fighting the Act. So do local councils, housing associations, housing workers and trade unions. Those who are adequately housed themselves are concerned about where their children and grandchildren will live. The government wants to divide us, but we must unite to demand a decent housing future for all. One thing is certain: the Housing and Planning Act will make the housing crisis worse. There will be fewer truly affordable, secure, decent quality homes available for rent so, if they can’t afford to buy, more people will be forced into the unregulated private rented sector. The government dangles the dream of home-owning for all, but in reality it means the richest few buying up more homes, and renting them to the rest of us. This turns back the housing clock to the early 20th century when 90% of people in the UK rented privately. We mustn’t let this happen! THE HOUSING AND PLANNING ACT IS A THREAT TO US ALL! http://www.axethehousingact.org.uk

  • Equal pay for Women.
In the modern, equal and fair Britain of 2016 it is more important than ever that everyone no matter who they are or what gender they may be have equal and fair opportunities regarding work. Britain is a diverse land of many races, religions, sexual preferences and opinions. In the UK we are striving on a whole for equality in all aspects of our lives. So many barriers which once stopped groups of people from having equal opportunities have now been demolished. Yet still there is the pay gap between men and women. Around 90% of job roles in the UK pay men more than women for the same job title. If this is not inequality then its difficulty to comprehend what is. Our head of state; The Queen is a female. Our new post-Brexit Prime Minister; Theresa May is a female and more then ever women are diversifying in their job roles and taking on what was once viewed as "mens jobs". But still the employers of this once great country continue to underpay the hard working women of the UK in comparison to men. If true equality is to be brought upon us and a fair society secured then we must end this (for lack of a better term) sexist scourge on our country. If you believe in feminism, equality, or just empowering the government to make a positive change then please do sign this petition. If you have a mother, sister, girlfriend, auntie or female friend then why not provide them with the equal right to a decent wage just as much as men?

  • Save the Paterson family from eviction
John Paterson and his brother have been farmers on the Isle of Arran for more than 20 years. They provide more than just produce to feed the economy and jobs so that local families may thrive, but they are a social hub and a part of Scottish heritage. Working farmland is not just important to the families that live and work there, but to the entire community. They now face eviction because of poorly written legislation, allowing landlords to take back land promised to tenant farming families, forcing the tenants onto the streets with no compensation, nowhere to go, with nothing, completely alone. When Andrew Stoddart, a tenant farmer in East Lothian, was faced with a similar eviction last year, 38 Degrees members came together to demand that the Scottish Government step in. 20,000 of us put our names to it, and together we forced the Government to intervene and make sure Andrew Stoddart got a better deal. We are calling on the Scottish Government to step in here too.

  • Save C.S. Lewis Nature Reserve
UPDATE - January 2020: The planning application has been withdrawn!!! We do not have all the details yet as to why this has been withdrawn. UPDATE May 2019: we are still waiting for this application to be discussed at the East Oxford Area Planning Committee meeting, this campaign is still alive! We need as much support as we can muster to attend that meeting. We will find out a week before the meeting if it is on the agenda and I will notify supporters by email; hopefully, lots of people can make it to the public meeting to demonstrate our disapproval in person! Lets not give up the fight! A planning application has been submitted for a new build development that would provide 9 apartments (in a mix of 1, 2 and 3 beds) in a 21⁄2 storey building and 22 parking spaces. The proposed plan would also require an access road to be built at the end of Lewis close and along the boundary of the C.S Lewis Nature Reserve run by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. I spent my childhood playing in the C.S Lewis reserve and now bring my own children there to explore the wonders it holds. It truly is a magical place and C.S. Lewis based his writings about Narnia on it, although back then it was his back garden! The reserve comprises mature woodland slopes and two ponds. The larger pond is noted for spawning toads and giant horsetail surrounding it. The nature reserve and surrounding area currently supports birds, reptiles, badgers and roosting bats among other wildlife. The area is also suitable for protected species such as Great Crested Newts which have been spotted in the area. The proposed development and access road will create noise, light, dust pollution and many more negative impacts on the environment and wildlife. A preliminary ecological appraisal has been undertaken and although does cover some of the impacts on the potential wildlife others have been omitted. The report does make some suggestions to mitigate the impact such as a protective, closed fencing around the development area, a review of the design to ensure no light spill or disturbance post development, undertaking work outside the main bird nesting season etc. However I strongly feel that despite these measures to mitigate the impact the development will still have a detrimental effect the area and wildlife. One persons objection on the oxford city council planning webpage for this development also points out that a close solid fence could actually compound the danger to the animals. Lewis close leading up to the reserve is peaceful and quiet and safe for the many children that use it to access the reserve. It is such a wonderful place and the access road and property development that is planned to run along it will no doubt pollute the lake, increase the traffic making it unsafe for pedestrians and spoil this place of amazing magic and beauty. This area is of national and historical significance and should be preserved for generations to come. The nature reserve and the adjacent Lewis Close is peaceful and quiet. Many residents and visitors go there for the peace, tranquility and the inspiration it offers. The nature reserve and the house that C.S. Lewis lived in is of huge literary and historical importance and would be spoiled by this development. I felt strongly that this development should not go ahead and decided to start this 38 degrees campaign. Please help me to stop this development from happening so future generations can continue to be inspired by its wildlife and wonder.

  • Do not stop PSA Prostate Specific Antigen tests for men.
I have have suffered prostate cancer and had a prostatectomy. The issue was highlighted following a blood test for PSA. I had no symptoms, don't smoke or drink and keep fit. It was the my manager who encouraged me to go for a test following a friend suffering the disease. Had I not had the test I would now be in the advanced stages of cancer and do not know how long I would have to live. Further to this I know of three other men with the same story.

It is allowing employers to discriminate workers on the account of their age. We must allow people of all ages to be paid the same wage for the exact same work.

  • Improve Road Safety Mansfield Road/Cross Street Area
These simple changes will have a significant impact on the safety of school children in the area and will prevent serious injury or death of a child. This area is in close proximity to three schools (Arnold Mill Primary school, Redhill Academy and Arnbrook Primary School) and a large number of children use the Mansfield Road junction and Cross street to get to and from school every day. The need for road safety is further strengthened because of recent serious road traffic incidents in this area that were reported in the media. In addition to this we have collected substantial anecdotal evidence of road incidents/near misses that have happened in the area as a result of inadequate safety measures.

  • Ban The Importation And Sale Of Fur In Scotland
The raising of animals for their fur is a practice currently banned within the UK because of the cruelty involved. Many shops now import their fur from countries such as Russia, Finland and China where laws regarding animal welfare are far less strict than ours. Animals (among them raccoon, bear, fox, rabbit, cats, dogs and mink to name a few) in these countries are raised to suffer in intolerable conditions before being removed from overcrowded cages before being anally or vaginally electrocuted , strangled, gassed or drowned before having the skin ripped from them. Some of these animals are still alive when it happens. Could you imagine the pain of being skinned alive? Would you let your pet be skinned alive? If not, why do we allow other countries to do it for us in the name of vanity, greed and profit? This is the 21st Century where such barbarism is no longer tolerated. Many designers such as Stella McCartney produce wonderful faux fur products and many more are now moving away from real fur. While protesting the use of real fur I recently had the pleasure to speak to an older lady who said that the only fur coat she had had belonged to her deceased mother but that she would never wear it herself and would never sell it as it meant someone wearing an animal that did not ask to be killed. I can understand her keeping it as a sentimental object, though as her mother lived in a time when fur was deemed acceptable. It no longer is. My beloved country of Scotland has always prided itself on being compassionate (we were the first country in the UK to allow same-sex marriage, after all). Why can't we be the first in leading the way against the barbarism of fur? If the UK TRULY is a nation of animal lovers then let us be the leading light!

  • End the employment agency/umbrella company rip off
Millions of workers across the UK, from construction workers to IT professionals, are being hit hard in their pay packets. The Umbrella companies make the workers pay their NI contributions (employers NI) as well their own (employees NI). On top of this double NI deduction the company also charges the worker for the 'privilege' of receiving their own money. They call this their 'margin' and can cost as much as £30 a week to the employee. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.ucatt.org.uk/umbrella-company-con-trick&ved=0ahUKEwicvcjBxvDPAhVsAsAKHdbSDFQQFgg9MAA&usg=AFQjCNF0VVD62uWTQceD9W6OE2JAog9C2g&sig2=UAe8y414tNQmyJAwDvFXHQ

  • Reinstate the Somerset County Transport Forum
No matter who we are we all need to get from A to B in our lives. Working transport means we can enjoy our lives and participate fully in society. It means we can reach employment opportunities and contribute to our country. It means healthy and supportive families, friendships and communities. It means access to the public services that we have already paid for. A forum would provide the opportunity to listen to people, business and community needs and deliver a transport strategy that will work for everyone. The County Council has a strategic role in transport planning and a County Transport Forum facilitates exchange of ideas, better accountability and communication with interested organisations.
