  • Keep Vaughan College Open!
1 - With the discovery of Richard III within half a mile of Vaughan College, Leicester is already experiencing a significant increase in tourism: this valuable City Centre site, driven past by thousands of people can become a vital shop window for the University. 2 - This centre has been used as a vital resource for many other groups, not just the University, and demographic changes mean that far more people are looking for Continuing Education. Surely some imaginative thinking could expand demand and increase revenue. 3 - Leicester is already known for its excellent multicultural track record, with people of many cultural backgrounds living in harmony - Vaughan College could become a showcase for this, in the City Centre, easily accessible by public transport, rather than being on a University Campus.

  • Save the Liverpool Care pathway
It's important that patients in England can and rightly should expect to be treated with care, compassion and that every attempt is made to preserve their dignity at the end of their life. This is important not only for the patient themselves but also their families. The Liverpool care pathway is used in situations where modern medicine is unable to prevent a patient's deterioration and where they are expected to die within the next 48-72 hours. It ensures that symptoms which are entirely predictable and a natural part of dying are assiduously looked for and controlled to ease a person's suffering at the end of their life. The loss of the pathway will effectively remove medical ad nursing staff's ability to ease patients' suffering as they are dying and will lead to futile and extraordinary measures to prolong life where there is no chance of improvement or recovery. At a time when families should be able to calmly reflect and celebrate the lives of their loved one in peace, instead patient's final days and hours will be transformed into a frenzied circus of intravenous cannulae placement, nasoenteric feeding tubes, 6 hourly infusions of fluids and antibiotics and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Allow patients to die in peace and enable our hospital staff to facilitate this as they have been doing since the inception of the Liverpool pathway.

  • Save Primrose Hill Care Home
The residents are all elderly and need to stay together. LCC have NOT said where they intend to place the residents if they close them down. Residents at Primrose Hill are in their 90's and one is 101. Moving them would almost certainly kill some of them. They deserve to be treated with far more respect than LCC is currently giving them. Consultation has just finished with result due in September. Large campaign locally has been under way for many months. We need all the help we can get.

  • Keeping open Heaton Library (Newcastle upon Tyne)
"Education; education, education", was Blair's cry when 1st elected; then he imposed the lack of grants available to would-be students; on the Saturday after school term ended! As a former teacher and someone who has benefited from grant-approved subsidy, it is my firm belief that READING is the key factor in improving one's mind; hence my despair at the threat of Library closures, which were available to children and adults who could not afford to buy key books, whatever their subject.

  • Abstain tick-box on ballot paper
Many people do not vote due to a lack of competent options, I for one cast my protest vote at the last election just so my vote wasn't wasted but i truly had no belief that any of the parties would be any good. And look at the mess we are in today! I cannot be alone in my thoughts on this.
