• Stop the removal of free school bus passes
This is going to place further financial strain on families and also the safety of children is paramount as the children who normally get a bus to school would have to walk along busy roads

  • Stand Up to Trump, Stand Up to Racism
Stand Up to Trump statement The election of Donald Trump is deeply disturbing and a stark warning to us all. Every right-wing figure and organisation is rejoicing at the prospect of President Trump. The shameful list stretches from Marine le Pen and the Front National in France, Gert Wilders in Holland, Norbert Hofer in Austria, right wing leaders in Poland and Hungary to most of the Republican Party and the Ku Klux Klan. In Britain Nigel Farage and UKIP are at the head of the Trump bandwagon supported by sections of the Tory Party. Racism – whether Islamophobia, or antis emitism, relentless scapegoating of migrants and refugees, the disregard for black lives or shockingly, blatant belief in white supremacy – is growing significantly. Racial attacks and other hate crimes are worryingly on the rise. In addition, Trump’s election is encouraging and legitimising a backlash against women’s and LGBT+ rights - hard won over the past half century – not to mention the possibly devastating impact on climate change. Against the background of a discredited neoliberal ideology which has devastated lives and communities and whole countries globally, these developments have already encouraged some to vote for Brexit and translated into electoral success for the right in the US. This could very possibly now be repeated in France with the election of Le Pen in France next spring and the further growth of UKIP in the UK. The parallels with the 1930s, while not exact, are too disturbing for comfort. But the outcome is far from settled. It entirely depends on how millions of us – at home and abroad - react. We and our values of respect and cooperation, represent the views of millions. We now need to turn that huge reservoir of support into a resounding internationalist answer to the divisive politics of despair of Trump, Farage and their Tory outriders. Time is short. We cannot allow racism to seep deeper into society and whatever our other differences, we must unite together to meet this serious threat. We the undersigned therefore urgently call for anti-racists, trade unionists, community and campaign activists, and above all everybody of goodwill, to join the growing opposition to Trump and what he stands for. In particular, please help us build for two vitally important demonstrations initiated by Stand up to Racism: The ‘Stand up to Trump’ mobilisation on Presidential Inauguration day, US Embassy Grosvenor Square Friday 20 January 2017 Stand up to Trump, Stand up to Racism, No to Islamophobia and Antisemitism, Refugees are welcome, Black Lives Matter National Demonstrations 18 March in London and Glasgow, supported by the TUC Signed by: Diane Abbott MP, Shadow Home Secretary Emily Thornberry MP, Shadow Foreign Secretary Clive Lewis MP, Shadow Business Secretary Talha Ahmad, Muslim Council of Britain Rabbi Lee Wax Dr Shazad Amin Muslim Engagement and Development CEO Dr Siema Iqbal, Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) Bruce Kent Len McCluskey, General Secretary Unite Dave Ward, General Secretary CWU Tony Kearns, Deputy General Secretary, CWU Kevin Courtney, General Secretary, NUT Mark Serwotka, General Secretary, PCS Mick Whelan, General Secretary ASLEF Manuel Cortes, General Secretary TSSA Sally Hunt, General Secretary UCU Ian Lawrence, General Secretary NAPO Ronnie Draper, General Secretary BFAWU Ian Hodson, President BFAWU Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, Shadow Attorney General Lord (John) Monks, former General Secretary TUC Lord (Bill) Morris, former General Secretary TGWU Baroness (Angela) Smith, Shadow Leader of the House of Lords Weyman Bennett, Stand Up to Racism Sabby Dhalu, Stand Up To Racism Grainne McGuire, Comedian Shakira Martin, NUS Vice President FE Mohammed Kozbar, Muslim Association of Britain Steve Hart, Unite Against Fascism Hugh Lanning, Unite Against Fascism Lindsey German, Convenor Stop the War Kate Hudson, General Secretary CND Dave Anderson MP Tracy Brabin MP Ben Bradshaw MP Ruth Cadbury MP Nic Dakin MP Wayne David MP Bill Esterson MP Paul Flynn MP Kate Green MP Carolyn Harris MP George Howarth MP Stephen Kinnock MP David Lammy MP Holly Lynch MP Rachael Maskell MP Madeleine Moon MP Ian Murray MP Lisa Nandy MP Kate Osamor MP Jess Phillips MP Steve Reed MP Virendra Sharma MP Wes Streeting MP Chuka Umunna MP Valerie Vaz MP Catherine West MP Daniel Zeichner MP Baroness (Tessa) Blackstone Baroness (May) Blood Baroness (Jean) Corston Lord (Quentin) Davies Lord (Derek) Foster Lord (George) Foulkes Baroness (Joyce) Gould Lord (Peter) Hain Lord (Alan) Haworth Baroness (Bev) Hughes Lord (Bob) Hughes Lord (Frank) Judd Baroness (Alicia) Kennedy Baroness (Glenys) Kinnock Lord (Neil) Kinnock Baroness (Doreen) Lawrence Lord (Chris) Lennie Baroness (Helen) Liddell Lord (David) Lipsey Baroness (Ruth) Lister Lord (Ken) Morgan Lord (Tom) Pendry Baroness (Dawn) Primarolo Lord (Tom) Sawyer Lord (David) Triesman Baroness (Janet) Whitaker Lord (Larry) Whitty Micheline Ngongo, Councillor Islington Claudia Webbe, Councillor Islington Suzanne Jeffery, Chair Campaign Against Climate Change

  • Save Netherwood Day Centre
Camden Council is planning to close Netherwood which is a specialist dementia day centre - the only one of its kind - in Camden. This will be the third time Camden has tried to close it since 2011. Each time we campaigned and won. We need to win again. Situated in NW6 between West Hampstead and Kilburn, Netherwood is regularly visited by people the world over, so impressive is its design and the care received by the people who attend it. If Camden Council closes this centre and sells off the land, as is the general feeling, then it will be lost forever. The council will never be able to afford such a site again. If the closure goes ahead, those attending their beloved Netherwood will be "decanted" to another nearby centre which is not a specialist day centre and is not purpose-built. The council says it will have money to make alterations to the building to make it "dementia friendly". We argue: why spend money on partially reconfiguring another centre when you have one right there that is purpose built? We appreciate local governments are having to make huge budget cuts, but we believe losing such a jewel of a resource will be a travesty and will adversely impact generations to come. Please help us save this incredible community resource a third time! Dementia is recognised as a growing concern in today's society. Not only is it important that there is excellent care for the person with dementia, it is also crucial that family carers are given time to themselves to recharge from what can often be a hugely challenging and exhausting situation. Places like Netherwood enable families to STAY together. They also keep people from being hospitalised and we know how important that is in the current climate. If we have brilliant services in the community the ultimate saving to society, both financially and in terms of general well-being, is enormous. Cutting such lifelines will ultimately cost more in the long run with some families perhaps deciding that residential care is the only solution. The cost of this to the council would be enormous. If we are to have a truly dementia-friendly society then places like Netherwood should never be threatened with closure but should be protected in perpetuity.

  • Abandon General Teaching Council Scotland fee increase
Most Scottish teachers saw their take home pay drop this tax year. This follows years of either no pay rise, or rises which are less than inflation. In addition pension contributions have been raised considerably, further reducing take home pay. GTCS fees were increased by 25% just 3 years ago - a further increase is unfair to teachers who are, like many in our society, under substantial financial pressures.

  • Street lighting in Edinburgh
There is so much danger out there dark driving seeing people wearing black. Houses in pitch black unable to see over the road. Going in and out of light that is not good even the main streets they have lights on both sides but there is still the black parts. Can't see kerbs very difficult. In my street when under the light I can't even find my key hole how bad is that.

  • Calming traffic on Old Oak Common Lane
This is essential the safety of the local community. This is a 20 mph zone in which drivers regularly go over 60 mph. Accidents on that stretch of Old Oak Common Lane are frequent but many go unreported as drivers know they've broken the law. There have been fatalities, buses losing their roofs, regular replacement of railings and bollards, a recent accident which took down the local internet and phone service. Crossing the road to the bus stop is dangerous and a particular risk for elderly people and young children.

  • A1307 URGENT - Haverhill, Cambridge the 'Road of Death'. Time for urgent action
It needs no introduction, a simple google search of A1307 will confirm that we hear about accidents and deaths on the road far too often. As our towns (Haverhill & Cambridge) rapidly grow, this remains the one main route between Haverhill and Cambridge (plus the other villages in between) for commuters. Cambridge is a fast growing science, research and development town which is growing on a massive scale. Companies far and wide choose Cambridge as a place to be located. Many large organisations will have a Head Office or a hub in this town and more and more moving in on a weekly basis. House are quickly being built in Cambridge and the demand for jobs here is high. However, as house prices in Cambridge and the outskirts continue to rise, employees in and around Cambridge are forced to live outside of the Cambridgeshire area due to the cost of renting or buying a home. Affordable areas that are local are hard to come by as we see house prices increase, thus people move just across the boarder into Haverhill, Suffolk where house prices have risen but within an affordable rate. Haverhill house are constantly being built to keep up with demand but sadly the infrastructure of transportation links and road capabilities into Cambridge remains exactly the same as it was when it was first built. A1307 is made up mostly of single carriage way, poor lighting, horrific uneven road surfaces and 2 very short dual carriageways which have entrances and exits off to and from other villages (which makes the roads extremely dangerous to cross at any point due to the sheer volume of traffic. Haverhill began major expansion in 1956 during a time that many families were re-settled there from London. 50 years ago this road would have been fit for purpose. However over the past 20 years, the A1307 has begun to replicate, only what can be described as a grave yard, the 'road of death' (as it's been called by local media) contains many many memorial sights, children, families, sons, fathers, mothers! Drivers do hold a responsibility to drive this road with care and attention, however, one wrong move in the spur of the moment and the lives of people are changed forever. In the event of an accident; which is a regular occurrence on this road, it not only affects those involved but families, friends, our struggling emergency services, witnesses, those who stop to help. We all have to live with this. Sadly many people you speak to in the area and beyond, will have a story to tell about the A1307 or know someone who has been in an accident on this road or worst still, lost their life. This road needs upgrading in some way, speed cameras in more place, average speed check checks, no overtaking bollards, perhaps a few round-a-bouts at junctions. Or a new bypass that is actually fit for purpose. This is as much the responsibility of Suffolk as this is Cambridge. We all need to pull together to make the authorities stand up and listen. Haverhill in Suffolk is town that is growing at dramatic rate with its recent development of a research park, the town with a population of over 27'000 (2014 figures). Added to this we have the industrial area which is home to many businesses that use the road many many times a day along with their lorries and vans. All of this growth, additional shops, and with businesses expending, the roads and transport systems have NOT even been touched. We also then have the other villages who access Cambridge via the A1307 as their only route to the towns. As we begin 2017 we have seen an accident that has already taken another 2 lives away from us. The people of Cambridge and Haverhill risk their lives every day when using this stretch of road, the only stretch of road for Cambridge to Haverhill (and vice verse). We have seen so much 'talk', so many promises but yet innocent people are still dying and being injured being on this road and changes are NOT being made. People are dying, lives of loved ones being damaged beyond repair, nothing is changing. This road is one of England's worst A roads and the infrastructure is NOT coping with the growth that has to happen. The population in Cambridge and Haverhill is rapidly growing and the road system needs to change to accommodate this growth. It has been left unchanged and as each day passes we prepare to hear about another accident or death. This is unacceptable and we should not be expected to live in an area where it is too dangerous to use the roads and to put that risk on ourselves.

  • Keep the name of 'Osmani' School
Majority of local residents are totally against the decision to change the name of the school without any consultation with the parents or a consensus. The name Osmani has a significant historical significance and has existed since 1986. 98% children studying at the school are from Bangladeshi community. The name 'Osmani' is the pride and honour of Bangladeshi history, heritage and culture. There are other names such as- Bangabondhu primary, Shapla primary and Kobi Nazrul primary which exist in Tower Hamlets. All of these school names were decided by Tower Hamlets Council in 1985, and should not be changed arbitrarily. Cllr Ohid Ahmed

  • Save the Kamelia Kids special needs unit!
Kamelia kids Nursery is the only nursery in West Sussex that has classes especially for special needs children. My son started off at this nursery in one of their mainstream classes. He used to crawl into the cloakroom and lay on the floor to escape the busy environment he couldn't handle. My son is autistic. The nursery moved him to an autistic class within the nursery. He settled immediately. He had extra support and an environment that was specially designed to meet his needs and allow him to make unbelievable progress in his communication and development. These classes give children like my son their best possible chance and a sense of security. Wscc are suggesting that this is about inclusion rather than funding. The truth is we have schools for special needs children funded by the council. That is because they are NEEDED. So why exactly is it that nurseries offering that service aren't? Of course they are! People come from miles around so that their children can access the resources Kamelia kids currently has because they are already few and far between. The early years of a child's development are crutial to shaping their future. As lovely as it would be to believe that all children with additional needs could cope and even thrive in a mainstream environment, as some do, the reality is that there are many that don't. That is fact. For those children they are going to be abandoned to a system that fails them if this is allowed to go ahead. These units/classes are too important to lose. Our special needs children shouldn't be forced into environments they will not only struggle to cope in but where their development will suffer too. This is failing the most vulnerable children in our society. How can that possibly be justified?
