• Increase the penalty for mobile phone use when driving
There is no need to use a phone when driving and no call is more important than another persons life. Our roads are more dangerous because of people ignoring the law and they can do this because the risk of getting caught is low and the penalty is insignificant. • Save our grass verges in Plumstead Road East. Taxpayer's money wasted!
This area is public and the grass was put there for all to enjoy not for a few to destroy. Money is wasted paying grass cutters where there is little grass left in some places. You can't even walk your dog on the grass because of lorries and cars blocking the way. It's also dangerous for the cars trying to leave their own driveway as their vision is obstructed. Now there is a hole in the ground caused by vehicles parking on the grass verge. How much will it cost to repair that?

  • Fair use of Concessionary Pass for those who live within TfL Zones that not run by London Boroughs
The residents who live within TfL zone 6 who have London Freedom Pass are recognisable accepted to use all TfL transport and National. ENCTS passes are not. It is because some areas within TfL zone 6 are not managed bt the London Borough Councils. As we live within TfL zone 6 and managed by Tanridge Council (Surrey), those residents who live in London have Freedom Pass take their granted for using our nearest railway stations for free travel to/from London that our ENCTS disabled concessionary pass cannot. This is unfair. Have they met the Equality Act 2010 regarding our concessionary passes that are limited use whilst people with London Freedom Passes can be used everywhere in England including all TfL transport? I discovered that the funds for TfL are partly from the Central Government Fund where we pay our taxes, why we don't have this benefit?

  • End our airport disgrace
This matters greatly because every day we are giving a terrible impression of our country to incoming business people, tourists and other visitors by the shocking inefficiency of our airport checks and controls. Often they are staffed by illiterate and surly staff. One short example: on Sunday 18 May at 0700, there were enormous queues at Heathrow Terminal 5 as hundreds of people queued at border control after disembarking from incoming flights. There were not enough staff at the individual inspection booths. Even people on 'Fast Track' were made to queue beyond any reasonable duration. People were shouting at security (Mitie) and Border Agency staff and those staff in turn were rude or dismissive. The security staff were patently ill-trained to cope with the situation. Those being made to go through security and scanning again (despite just coming off flights) were subjected to another huge queue and lengthy wait. The majority of bags were being checked for explosives. One Muslim woman on her way to Bahrain was in tears having just received bad news from home: she was ignored by security staff. A businessman from South Africa said he would never, ever again fly via Heathrow. When politely challenged, the man wearing the "Supervisor" vest was also dismissive and said if there were fewer retail outlets, there'd be more room for security controls. What a terrible impression of the UK. What are we thinking of?

  • Stop The HGV Road Carnage
This situation cannot be left unchecked (The UK government has been successful in reducing the patrol of roads by local Police forces to almost nil and, as a driver that drives some 25-30,000 miles per year in the UK, can certainly vouch for the lack of Police patrols and, the increasing carnage caused by poor driving standards of HGV drivers. My particular collision was caused by a female HGV "Tramper" (trampers live in the HGV vehicle for many days and sometimes, weeks) who, at 60mph, drove into the side of my car causing us to be flipped 4 times across 3 lanes of the motorway then, taking out 60 metres of the central reservation steelwork. We were cut from our car after being treated for only minor injuries (Luckily) We then learnt that the HGV driver had initially tried to drive away from the crash site then, after being interviewed by Police, admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. She had been driving for some 34 hours and had tampered with the Tachograph display (the tachograph machine is a legal requirement in most HGV vehicles which monitors the driving habits of the current driver. There are imposed break periods and "Stop/Start" recordings within the mechanism. Unfortunately, many drivers (it would appear), have learnt how to override this mechanism and, hence, can drive much further and over longer periods of time). Having researched this situation with 3 Police forces in the UK, I have sourced that very few HGV drivers are ever tasked with proving their working patterns (indeed, some Police Officers are not trained in Tachograph use for HGV purposes). Further, and on the admission of several Police Officers, most foreign HGV drivers, when causing infringements to UK road law, are sent on their way without any charge, fine or loss of vehicle after causing mayhem with other road users. Several Police Officers being heard to say that "The paperwork is too time consuming and, the Courts will not allow us to bring these charges before them due to the fact that the drivers will be long gone into their home country before it has a chance of being heard in the Courts". This is unacceptable - the laws should be changed to allow the Police to operate as their counterparts in other countries. Other countries Police forces can, after such misdemeanours, confiscate vehicles, impose roadside fines, detain HGV drivers for court appearances next day and even, summon the employers of that particular HGV Driver to appear in court also. There is an increasing number of HGV road accidents whilst being driven by poorly trained and badly managed so-called Professional drivers. This needs to STOP.

  • Reintroduce the local link 406 bus service!
The decision to cut the service, ignored public opinion and contradicted the local authority's own comments just a few years ago, when in a press release it was announced that ‘due to a high number of passengers using the Local Link 406 service, these buses will run half-hourly rather than hourly on a three-month trial basis’ – So why remove a much needed and required service for local people! A local link bus service, like the 406, not only helps address the ever increasing number of cars on the road, thus reducing the cost of road repairs each year and burden on the local tax payers, enables people to be able to travel around the city and visit commercial premises, thus supporting the local economy, but more importantly helps reduce harmful pollution and impact on our city's environment.

  • Save the Free Bus!
The service is a lifeline to many ordinary people, particularly those with mobility problems. Sheffield's FreeBee service is very popular and has been a great link to the new Moor Market. It is described on the Travel South Yorkshire website as “a huge success” and in 2009 after only two years of operating “carried its millionth passenger…, smashing predicted figures and receiving glowing feedback." We urge you as Councillors who represent people in South Yorkshire not to enforce these savage cuts and other associated 'savings' on the local population and instead look at the long-term value to society and the local economy this service provides.

  • Railway Matters (And Railways Matter)
A national need, highlighted by the resent desperate situation in Cornwall: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26042990 Also large areas of central of Wales and the English Midlands (not least Lutterworth and many towns and villages in Leicestershire along with those in many other counties in the Midlands and the North) were deprived of services when the Great Central and local lines were closed. Beeching's "one route only from major city A to major city B" left thousands of towns and villages without rail access, also leaving many major towns in close geographic proximity without direct links. Roundabout routes may be OK for freight and mail, but they simply are not efficient for commuters, especially at a time when pollution, energy needs and road maintenance costs all point towards the better, greener alternative; rail. This is made all the more relevant by the need to reduce road traffic, and plan for a more environment-friendly future.

  • Stop the use of Old Tyres on Buses and Coaches
In September 2012, my nephew Michael Molloy was one of three people killed on a coach travelling back from Bestival Music Festival on the Isle of Wight. Kerry Ogden and the coach driver Colin Daulby were also killed. They were coming home to Liverpool. The coach crashed into a tree because the front tyre blew. The tyre was 20 years old. Unbelievably this tyre was not illegal because there is no law to say how old a tyre should be. It cost Michael, Kerry and Colin their lives. In addition, the coach was a 52 seater but, illegally, there were 53 people travelling on it - all in their teens and twenties. Many suffered devastating injuries and Colin trusted his employers to provide him with a safe vehicle. Kerry was only 23 years old, my nephew, Michael, was just 18 years old. He was a young, talented musician and songwriter with his whole life ahead of him. He would still be here today if the use of old tyres had been illegal. The Transport Minister, Patrick McLoughlin, has refused to act on research undertaken in the USA which clearly highlights the dangers around using old tyres, He states that there is not enough evidence to legislate. It is hard not to conclude from his response that Mr. McLoughlin has bowed to pressure from businesses such as coach companies and second hand tyre retailers not to change the law as it could cost them money. Instead he feels it is enough to issue guidelines about the age of tyres. It is, of course, companies such as Merseypride Travel - the coach company who put profit before lives -who would simply ignore these guidelines. This is why the Traffic Commissioner, Beverley Bell has had to act and remove their licence indefinitely as they are not fit to run a coach company. How can we be sure that other unscrupulous coach and bus companies won't operate in such an irresponsible and despicable way? The answer is that - without legislation - we can't. It is predominantly children, young people, elderly people and people who can't afford a car who are the most frequent users of public transport. The use of old tyres has to stop for everyone's sake because every time somebody steps on a coach or bus or allows their children to travel on this type of transport, they could be putting their lives at risk.. Please give your support to this important campaign. Thank you.

  • Provide free bus passes for students who are required to continue further education
The legal age for students to leave education is being raised to 17 and soon it will be 18. Starting from this September students are required to continue to some form of education for another year, however in Gloucestershire parents are still required to pay the £300+ (in some cases) for their children to continue on at school, even though they have no way of leaving education. Usually the lower stage of secondary school is free transport provided by the council, however now that students are required to stay on longer, this should also be provided free of charge.
