• Stop politicians accepting any free gifts
It is important that governments and individual politicians must be seen not to be taken advantage of by the gift of goods, money, event tickets, air fares paid, free use of private jets, holidays etc. and those politicians MUST be seen as being entirely trustworthy and honest. Not the case as things stand today.

  • Members of Parliament and Government should not receive gifts
Most ordinary people don't get given gifts. In many professions (Civil Service, social workers, carers, Local Authority officers, LA Councillors, Doctors, Lawyers, Police) it is allowed to receive gifts. We are so used to 'sleaze' allegations where MPs and members of Government receive clothes, football tickets, holidays, etc) we take it for granted that MPs are entitled to receive gifts as long as they are registered properly. In order to clean up the image of politicians, MPs should be like the rest of us and not be allowed to receive gifts of any kind.

  • State Pension
Successive governments have been operating a PONZI scheme dishonestly taking our contributions to National Insurance into the Treasury instead of investing the pension element into a pension scheme thereby eliminating the requirement of current tax payers funding the Old State Pension. All pensioners who retired before 2016 receive considerably less State Pension despite paying into the system for up to 50 years. This should at least be protected from any future means testing by changing it back to an entitlement not a benefit.

  • Please stop politicians taking any gifts "not just clothing"
No gifts being permitted would promote and support accountability and more importantly transparency regarding who may have influence.  Those we elect in future, or those in a position to donate such gifts...

  • Reduce pesticide residues in our food
It is impossible to quantify the risk from a cocktail of chemicals in our diet. In this situation we should adopt a precautionary approach and minimise them as far as practical. EU standards are a sensible aim. We should not be exporting our pesticide footprint or importing food with more pesticides than we recently deemed safe.

  • Burial for a Hero
Apart from the moral dubiety of continuing to have him on display, Joseph is illustrative of why we constantly need to re-interpret history and of how essentially 'ordinary' people have played an important part in such history. In particular Scotland's 18th century history is under revision and the role of activists like Smith in the eventual development of democratic political systems is only nowadays beginning to be understood. There was more to 18th century Edinburgh than the Enlightenment. In his time the idea of people's history was unknown- not today.
