• Agency Workers Right to Full Time Employment
Many agency workers, especially in the haulage industry, are being used by companies as full time staff, but kept on the books as Agency employees, rather than taken on directly. This deprives the Agency worker of the same terms, conditions, and employment rights enjoyed by the directly employed colleagues they work along side. Saving employers enormous sums, and responsibilities. I would wish the offer of direct employment, be made mandatory, after an Agency worker remains with a company for more than three months. Exceeding this period would prove that there is a vacancy, and an employer is just trying to reduce costs, and responsibilities at the Agency workers expense.

  • Childhood Cancer Awareness Postage Stamp
A stamp supporting childhood cancer awareness would be really important. We need to educate the world that children get cancer as well. With education comes awareness, earlier diagnosis, research, funding, and a kinder cure. Childhood cancer is different to adult cancers, yet it is treated with scaled down adult versions, which often have long term side effects lasting a life time. Children can't speak for themselves, so we have to.

  • Ban any microbead products at Tesco
This is pollution of a most destructive kind. Once it goes down the drain and ends up in the ocean it causes untold damage to organisms ranging from plankton to birds and sea mammals. Waitrose recently announced that they are going to stop stocking ANY products with microbeads in them. All other supermarkets should follow their great example and, not only stop using them in their own products, but stop stocking them all together.

  • No UK public service contracts for companies who don't pay UK tax
I feel that this is important because public services should not be used to generate profit for individuals or shareholders beyond what is necessary to operate the service and provide investment into improving the service.

  • Tell Paypal to allow Palestinians to use their services.
The inability to use Paypal's global electronic money transfer system, is hindering the progress of Palestinian owned businesses to exploit markets necessary to their healthy growth, in an location where this is vital. They should have the right to compete on a more even footing with Israeli settlers who suffer no such restrictions.

  • NO CUTS at Homerton hospital
The company that runs the cleaning, catering, security services at Homeron Hospital announced in July that they plan to cut hours and posts for some staff. Initially we were told this could mean up to 89 redundancies but ISS have since stated that the number will be much less than this. Nevertheless, it is clear that ISS are looking to reduce hours and some positions. Our first concern is about patient safety. Where staff are already stretched trying to complete the work they need to do, we believe that the impact of staff working shorter hours or having fewer staff working in the hospital will be that the vital work that our cleaners, caterers and security staff do cannot be completed effectively. We are also concerned about the impact on staff. ISS staff have told us that they are worried about what cuts in pay will do to themselves and their families. This is a very low paid group of workers. They are also concerned about the impact on the health of staff left covering increased workloads. But above all, ISS staff have pointed out that their role is about saving lives. They get job satisfaction from working for patients and are very committed to the Homerton Hospital and are therefore extremely concerned about what this will do to the service they can provide. Protect our patients, protect our NHS, no reduction in hours or posts. The current threat to hours and posts and the lack of information provided to staff does little to support either promise. Patient care should be our priority and staff are willing to discuss how workloads are organised. But cuts in hours overall and loss of posts will not support better patient care.

  • Stop a Betting Shop on Church Lane, Bedford
A large betting company is in the process of arranging a lease on a unit on Church Lane adjacent to the Iceland store. Research has shown that betting companies are targeting some of the poorest in our communities, particularly through the use of fixed odds betting terminals, which this shop would be allowed to include if licensed. Fixed odds terminals have been called the 'crack cocaine' of gambling. The shop will be in one of the most deprived areas of Bedford, that is also in the bottom 20% of the country. It has above average unemployment and high levels of child poverty. The shop would be located next to a medical centre, a community centre, a primary school and housing for the recently homeless. Church Lane has historically suffered from problems with anti-social behaviour, police and councils have seen increased problems where betting shops, in particular where fixed odd terminals are installed. Local businesses are already concerned and any increase in problems could threaten existing shops as well as causing distress to residents. We the undersigned call on the licensing committee of Bedford Borough Council to reject any application for a betting shop in Church Lane.
