• Stop a Betting Shop on Church Lane, Bedford
A large betting company is in the process of arranging a lease on a unit on Church Lane adjacent to the Iceland store. Research has shown that betting companies are targeting some of the poorest in our communities, particularly through the use of fixed odds betting terminals, which this shop would be allowed to include if licensed. Fixed odds terminals have been called the 'crack cocaine' of gambling. The shop will be in one of the most deprived areas of Bedford, that is also in the bottom 20% of the country. It has above average unemployment and high levels of child poverty. The shop would be located next to a medical centre, a community centre, a primary school and housing for the recently homeless. Church Lane has historically suffered from problems with anti-social behaviour, police and councils have seen increased problems where betting shops, in particular where fixed odd terminals are installed. Local businesses are already concerned and any increase in problems could threaten existing shops as well as causing distress to residents. We the undersigned call on the licensing committee of Bedford Borough Council to reject any application for a betting shop in Church Lane.

  • Veggie Pret for Cambridge
There is a huge vegan and vegetarian community in Cambridge who would love to have more options for quick and easy meals. There are 1373 people in the vegan and vegetarian Facebook group, and many more people who eat veggie diets for health or environmental reasons. The Cambridge Vegan Fair 2016 is taking over the Cambridge Guildhall, one of the biggest venues in the city. The United Nations recommended a global move to a vegan diet in 2010, explaining its potential to reduce environmental degradation and chronic diseases. Many people are choosing to do this, and it is slowly becoming a mainstream choice. Pret a Manger can help to bring about this positive change in society at a faster rate by opening more veggie Pret stores. http://www.eater.com/2015/2/16/8048069/un-says-veganism-can-save-the-world-from-destruction

  • SAVE OUR 37
Having endured nine months of road closure due to land slip it now transpires that the 37 service during this time picked up more traffic flow on its redirected route (Newton St Loe & Saltford) who frankly have services to both cities of Bath and Bristol. A decision has been made by the company that the service 'doesn't cut the mustard' and is not commercially viable. BNES & SGC need to take URGENT action at Council ward level to step in and provide a solution for rural home owners both young and elderly.

  • Keep the science museum’s children’s galleries free!
It is vital to make sure children from all backgrounds are inspired by to do science and that scientific education remains reflective of the scientific consensus and not what is in the interests of the sponsors. As big fans of science education, we are deeply saddened to hear that the popular Launch Pad gallery is to be relaunched not just with sponsorship from an oil company, but an entrance charge too. As research at King’s College and the Wellcome Trust emphasise, the British public are keen consumers of our amazing scientific culture, but also there are worrying divides in terms of which economic groups are most likely to engage. Price tags on science museum galleries will only exacerbate such social division. In addition to the entrance charge, it is totally inappropriate for this new gallery to be sponsored by an oil and gas company. It is a corruption of science to see our energies captured by fossil fuel companies and especially galling to see such sponsorship of a gallery aimed at children - it is their futures and qualties of life we risk ruining after all. We have particular concerns when it comes to the London Science Museum. As freedom of information requests by Art Not Oil have shown, previous sponsorship deals have shown the museum seriously pressurised by oil companies, compromising their scientific and cultural credibility.

  • Stop pharmaceutical companies hiking vital drug prices unfairly
Update (28 August, 2016): Since I started this petition the NHS Trust where I live has decided, due to the huge increase in cost imposed by Univar, the manufacturer, that it can no longer supply me with Trientine Dihydrochloride, the drug that I rely on to control an otherwise fatal rare liver condition called Wilson's Disease. The situation for me and other Wilson's Disease patients has taken a turn for the worse so please sign the petition and please share it and encourage as many people as possible to do the same. Thank you so much! Jude ___________________________________________________________ The amazing NHS, funded by us through our taxes, buys drugs and provides them to us, our family members, our friends, our colleagues, to help us beat, alleviate and control all kinds of physical and mental health conditions. My case is just one example of how pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers unfairly hike the prices of vital lifesaving drugs in order to inflate profits and company share prices. It's not the only example out there and I'm sure it's not the worst. We need to stand up and let them know that unethical price hikes are not acceptable. I have a rare genetic liver condition called Wilson's Disease. To control this, I take a drug called Trientine Dihydrochloride, which is a product that's been unchanged since it was developed for the treatment of this potentially fatal condition in the 1960s. Trientine is owned by multinational corporation, Univar, and it's been a registered product in the UK since 1985. Trientine is a great drug! It's kept me alive and healthy for the past 30 years when other drugs haven't worked. The fantastic NHS provides Trientine to me free of charge (I just pay the tiny prescription fee). The hospital pharmacist that supplies me with Trientine told me that until recently it cost the NHS about £400 for 100 Trientine capsules (that's a lot, right!) and that was about 16 days' worth for me. Univar has, over several incremental rises, increased the cost by about 750% so it now costs the NHS nearly £3,400 for the same amount. That's £205 each day to keep me alive and healthy; £1,431 each week; £6,219 each month; £74,624 each year... I now face periods without this vital drug because the NHS pharmacy cannot provide enough due to their spending limits and the increased cost. I don't know what this means for my health exactly but it's not good - I know that much. I'm not the only person. Others with Wilson's Disease are facing the same uncertainty over their health and prospects for controlling this condition. This is the ugly, greedy, unethical face of the pharmaceutical industry. Companies often have a monopoly on the rights to a certain vitally important drug and abuse this status to make profit hand over fist and inflate their share prices with no care for good organisations like the NHS that they're ripping off, and no regard for the patients that ultimately suffer, fall ill and die by being priced out of the treatment that they need. It can cost a pharmaceutical company a lot of money to develop new drugs but we're talking here about products that are long established and unchanged. There's no justification for astronomical price hikes. We need to show that we care and demand better ethical standards and enforce fair pricing regulations with us the people and our NHS at the heart. Thanks.

  • SAVE "POLZEATH PANCAKE SHACK" (mr surfys)
We are a pancake shack, we are based on a cliff where there is no shop, food outlet of facilities for 1 mile. We provide a service for people local and tourists, serving drinks and hot food to take away, we are sensitive about the enviroment where we are, and we operate from an ECO cabin, which runs on wind power, we take our rubbish home and we use recyclables. We are only open during weekends and summer months, we close the shack and move it by the end of September. We have permission from the land owner at Atlantic terrace to say we can operate from the parking space, and also the highways agency, have no objections to us being there. We have been there at New Polzeath for 6 years now, and since the road closure with the Atlantic house hotel, we have considerably lost business. But we are still open for the public, as we are providing a service, and also we only use local suppliers.

  • Make Labour NEC respect Democracy and allow FAIR voting in the Leadership election
The actions of the NEC are so undemocratic they do not belong in this country. All across society they have excluded members and supports with bitter choices. This cannot be allowed to go on in The Labour Party.

  • Stop the Misleading Sun Newspaper
The Sun newspaper is part of News Corp - Rupert Murdoch's media corporation. As such it is not only highly biased but has often published inaccurate, misleading or false information. It has recently been censored on several counts by the press watchdog the IPSO and ordered to publish corrections. • It promoted racial hatred by falsely claiming 1 in 5 British Muslims support jihadis. • A piece about Unite - Britain's biggest trade union was found to have 10 separate inaccuracies in just 1 article. • It encouraged animosity between football fans by printing falsehood about Liverpool supporters at the Hillsborough disaster. • It's owner has a direct audience and influence within the Tory leadership. • It advocated the use of gunships to stop refugees. • It has even put words in the queen's mouth by saying she was pro Brexit. Despite all this it has faced no real consequences and continues to spread misinformation, for example: about anti-semitism within the Labour party. Whilst we believe in freedom of the press, the people deserve media outlets that report accurately on their world so they can make informed choices as citizens. Lies should have no place in UK media. The Sun is lying to people en masse. We believe that the Co-op as one of the most ethical shops on our streets should lead the way in holding the Sun to account.

  • Give the National Living Wage to people under 25
This is a really important to me as I see the National Minimum Wage an unfair practice to everyone Under 25. Workplace Policies bang on about "Equal Opportunities" and "Equal Rights", but where does equal rights and opportunities come into play about how much every single worker gets? It is unfair and wrong of every workplace in Britain to be giving extremely hard, motivated and invaluable employees to be unfair paid all due to the National Minimum Wage boundaries set by the UK Government. Every single employee in Britain should be entitled as my pay as everyone else. It is completely bang out of order pay 16 year old £3.87 per hour for then a 28 year old, holding the same job role AND experience, to be paid £7.20 per hour. This is not "Equal" and this is not by any means right. This, back in 1996 should have been outlined in The Employment Rights Act 1996, to where every employee is within their right to equal pay to anyone of all ages. Personal Story: I once worked at an Attraction Theme Park where in 2013 was getting paid £3.72 per hour (I was 16). After a year and a half of employment there (2014) with a year and a half's experience on my CV, there was 21+ year old getting paid £6.50 per hour when these employees has no experience of anything of any kind and they were getting paid at the time (nearly £2) more than i was earning per hour. I am now 19, driving, got rent to pay, pay for car insurance, pay my monthly phone bill, fuel, car tax, MOT, ect. National Minimum Wage is not enough to pay for all of this. We as a generation need to paid equally as we all have expensive bills to pay out for. Not just the Over 25's. This age segregation of our pay limits is common discrimination to all of us and segregating all of us just because of how old we all are. This is a disgrace to my employment rights and my own equal opportunities and rights of the work place. It is a sham that this sort of practice is getting used today where workers are entitled to equal pay. This is the reason why the National Minimum Wage needs to be complete and indefinitely abolished, then that to be taken over with the National Living Wage.

  • Ikea to recall Malm chest of drawers in the UK too!
A piece of furniture doesn't become safer just because it's in a different country (where the population is slightly less likely to seek compensation). Malm furniture has taken the lives of several children in the US and Ikea has taken the correct course of action in recalling the related items. They should be taking the correct course of action here in the UK too and wherever else these items have been sold. Yes the instructions do warn that furniture should be attached to a wall to make safe but buyers were not made aware of this at the time of purchase because it is not implicit that the furniture Must be attached. What about all the customers who were sold this furniture who rent? Many of them cannot just knock holes in their walls even if Ikea do supply the attachments for free. Be fair to your customers it can't be one rule for US and another for the UK.
